2008 BU commitment- Chris Roberts

Seems like a slightly odd commit to me, but I'll take it. Anyone else feel like JL and co are doing an even better job keeping stuff secret, I mean we knew a little bit about this guy but not much...

I think Jim Les likes Chris Brown because he is a 6-3 version of Will Franklin with more athleticism.
He can do it all, handle the ball a little, score, and rebound.

Remember that Will Franklin averaged only 8.4ppg and 2.9rpg as a juco sophmore, and Chris' numbers are better than that as a freshman at juco (9ppg/3rpg), and 40% from 3-pt.

Mike, he is definitely bigger, decide for yourself.

But here is the updated (html) Scholarship Grid.
We still have one scholarship for 2008 for sure, and at least one more possible unless taken by Xavier Crawford.
Of course something else could happen that could free up even more.

(ps-- the scholarships allotted to Crawford, Buycks, and Sweatman are still a bit speculative)

Oh, and one other thing.................

WELCOME CHRIS ROBERTS !!!

Van Coleman says this about Chris Roberts:

"October 1, 2007
Bradley adds quality junior college guard...

Jim Les and his Bradley staff dip into the junior college ranks to add a quality wing scorer and defender...

According to a source close to the program, and confirmed this afternoon by the Peoria Star Journal,
the Bradley Braves have added their seconf backcourt recruit this fall in 6-foot-4 170-pound Chris Roberts from Navarro CC, TX.

The thin but very quick wing talent can knock down long range jumper or slash to hoop and finish above the rim.
He has really quick hands (2steals a game) and feet to become a defensive stopper in the Mo Valley
.
He averaged 9 points and 3 boards last winter, but based on his summer play look for those numbers to blow up this winter.
"

I'd settle for 3 ppg and 9 rpg! Our rebounding prowess was a little on the wimpy side last year!

I hope this guy is better than he sounds... 6' 4 165 is pretty skinny and his numbers don't sound the greatest. I trust the coaching staff on this one

I concur witrh a couple other posters. Chris Roberts is definitely not skinny. He is very muscular and strongly built. I would guess he must be 185-190, and around 6'4", as he was a shade shorter than Andrew.

I have heard that this is the 2-guard Jim Les really wanted more than anyone else available, and he is ready to step in immediately in 2008 and give quality playing time after Jeremy and Daniel are gone.

Welcome to Bradley, CR!

Here was the previous information we had posted about Roberts--

If that's the case then that's good enough for me. At this point JL definately deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Welcome Chris! What's your number you wear/want - cause you got it!

He wears #31 at Navarro College. He is pictured here front, center with the headband--

It appears the site is offline ronight.

I like the size a lot, it will be interested to see how he improves this year scoring-wise. I am also interested in his 3-point shooting ability, as it's such a vital part of our offense (40% looks good so far). I would have preferred a 4-year player, but until proven otherwise I will trust the staff on this one. Sounds like Coach Brooks is delivering on the recruiting trail, it will be very interesting to see how his guys pan out on the court.

2 scholies filled, 2 more to go. Stan Simpson, we're waiting!

There is a new article posted this morning on Jucojunction.com about Chris Roberts verballing to Bradley--

It will require a password, but here are a couple clips--

Chris Roberts, (SO) 6-foot-4 (170) from Navarro College in Texas, will be a Bradley Brave next season. Roberts visited the Bradley campus this past weekend and liked what he saw.

Roberts, originally from Fort Worth, TX, averaged 9.1 ppg, three rebounds and two steals last season for the Bulldogs. Chris took official visits to Utah State and Wichita State besides his trip to the Peoria, IL campus of Bradley.

"Roberts is a quick athletic wing player that can slash to the basket and finish at the rim," said JucoJunction staff member Bret Swanson.

Also, Jucojunction has an article about the guard who just committed to Wichita State, Clevin Hannah--

It reports that he was impressed with a visit to Wichita State last weekend (the same weekend Chris Roberts visited Wichita State), and decided to end his recruitment and accept a scholarship. They report that Wichita was his only offer so far.

It's worth noting here that Utah State is no slouch. Stew Morrill is a very accomplished coach and USU is one of only 4 programs to win 23 games the last 4 years in a row (or something like that).

It's easy to dwell on recruiting losses to Sampson et al but Les has had to out-recruit some real solid guys like Matt Doherty, Morrill, Reggie Theus when he was at NMSU, Billy Gillespie at TA&M, etc.

Morrills teams at Utah State have been very good. And though we recognize that MVC teams like Bradley have a tough time recuiting top talent, Utah State must also be a tough place to recruit to. It's a nice campus with great facilities, but Logan, Utah is really remote and not easy to get to.

The distance to any decent sized city, and some conservative laws and traditions there make it a little less desirable to many recruits looking to have a good time in their college years.:)

Great point, and something I was thinking about myself today. I think people need to realize is that we're not going to win very many head-to-head battles, if any, with any noteworthy BCS schools. We just aren't. We as a fan base should not get as upset when a guy drops us for the Big East or Big 10, or feel like we're 'settling' when we land a guy who had only top mid-majors after him like Utah St or Wichita St. It is an accomplishment that we're noted and published as finalists with a number of these top recruits. If anything, BU being associated with the Shumpert's and Simpson's makes the tier of players that are perhaps just a notch below those blue-chippers want to be a part of our program even more. We've seen how those guys can blossom in '05-'06 and '06'-'07. Heck, we got a lottery pick of it. Until our talent level dips below the top 2-3 in the conference, I think we all need to trust the staff on guys we land. I'm not saying that Chris Roberts is going to be an all-American, but let's wait and see just what he turns out to be. We just landed a Top 30 recruiting class, mostly made up of guys who weren't even our first options. There's no reason to believe that this class will be any different.
