That is simply ridiculous and not true at all. But it might be an understandable excuse made by someone who prefers to see Bradley cast in any negative light possible.
Some of the programs where people "care" the most- Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Memphis, and many more, we've seen examples of far worse behavior by athletes than anything that has happened at Bradley in my lifetime.
And yet, if the local columnists write anything about those programs, it is usually to heap praise on them, defend them, and usually ignore the bad news totally. In fact, most schools have athletes who commit crimes, and are guilty of bad behavior, but it usually goes unreported, so most people never even hear about it.
My point is that there seem to be some people who hold Bradley to a different standard, and rush to condemn BU for even minor issues (infinitely less serious than these being reported) like the ones that have drawn the accusations of "renegade", and the silliness last year over Taylor Brown's immature tweets that some people actually tried to make the case were some kind of criminal sexual harassment.
What "people" hold Bradley to a different standard and who condemn BU for minor issues? Who exactly are you talking about here?
You are saying that when "negative" things go on at Kentucky, Memphis, or any other school in the country where people care a lot the local media there doesn't write anything about it? Or are you talking about the Peoria media writing about it? Im confused.
I never want to see Bradley shed in a negative light. However I understand that if you WANT to be a bigtime program with a lot of media attention, beat writers, TV stations covering you, and 10,000 fans a night that you have to understand that you have to be willing to read the good and the bad.
The local media SHOULD cover something that is newsworthy. To act like they shouldn't is very fourth grade. This isn't grade school soccer. I like to think Bradley basketball as the bigtime with bigtime standards. With that come high expectations and media scrutiny. I WANT it that way.
Do others want the program to be the "Little Engine that Could" that the only coverage is slanted stuff written by the university PR department? Teams that do that aren't relevant.
Its pretty easy---do good things, good things get written. Do bad things from time to time, things questioning that get written from time. Why is this so hard to understand?
You see it at every single program that considers themselves bigtime and is lucky enough to have a lot of media attention. I like that people hold Bradley accountable. It means they care. I don't care what the Pantagraph writes about ISU. I don't care about what the Southern Illinoisian writes about SIU. I care about Bradley and love that the local media care enough to follow the program so closely.
I still think many fans don't understand the role of the media and how lucky Bradley is to have the local media follow it so closely. There are many BCS programs who would kill for the type of coverage Bradley gets. I know this for a fact. Much of that is due to the great fan interest. That's awesome. I love that. But, as I mentioned, I don't expect everything to be candy coated either.
