2010 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic update

Sure losing the two home games would stink.

I'm sure an 8th team will be found. However, the format could still allow for 4 games (even if just for a couple participants) but it's getting awful tough the longer this draws out. Worst case scenario with securing an 8th team, you get 3 games-against a field that is pretty decent-and that has advantages over playing an additional home game against an RPI 300 team.

However, if the tournament falls through, BU might be forced to fill out what games it loses with whatever they can get (bad, road or non-DI). And that would be bad.

But I think it will work out. It just won't be what BU was guaranteed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure if this falls through BU could only schedule one additional game right? Doesn't this tourney fall under the rules that allow it to count for only one non-con game?

My bigger concern is the loss of 2 home games. Part of the reason we have a couple of road games on the board (WCU, Duke) is because we thought we'd have 2 home games in pocket from this.

If the tournament is lost, I bet these schools can easily get together and schedule each other on the dates the tournament was supposed to be, to alleviate the schedule crunch. But if Bradley has to go on the road for it, now you're down to just 3 or so non-con home dates (Utah, NIU, EIU). And that would encite the fan base, IMO.

Wow - very surprised that USC agreed to be a road team. I think TCU wasn't too happy to have to play 2 games away. Any idea if TCU will play another road game as part of this tournament?

Or could Bradley be asked to play a road game, too?

I think TCU is the problem with this tourney.... most organizers are clear that you get 2 at home, then play in the better bracket for the neutral site for these type of tournaments. I think it seems clear TCU did not want to play 2 road games and almost had the format changed to be a 3 day event in Springfield. Now it looks like TCU got their way and got a good home game vs. USC.

Could Bradley be asked to travel? I guess so. It would have to be to TCU though more than likely. But it sounded like a DII team was going to be the 8th team so we would likely get that home game vs. them as the 2nd home game for this tourney.

I think TCU is the problem ...

I think the MWC teams are likely getting the same nudge from their conference commish that the MVC teams get -- and that is to NOT go on the road so much to play games......They rarely leave their home court for nonconference games unless they play in a tourney or get a Big 12 opponent...

BUT -- I was surprised when I looked at the TCU roster...they would rival ISU for the title of Transfer U!!

of the 14 players on the roster...almost all of them are "well travelled"..

5 are juco transfers but 3 of those went to multiple high schools and prep schools, and one went 1st to Arkansas, then got to TCU via stopover at juco.

2 more came as transfers direct from other D-I's but one of them had been at multiple prep schools including a short stop at Decatur Christian when Beas Hamga was there...

3 others came from 5th year prep schools....and were already in their 20's when they got to college

5 are international students..in fact so were many of their recent gards as well....

and only four of their rostered players came to TCU from a standard high school (not basketball-prep)

The Hall of Fame tournament still lists these 7 teams as participating-
UMass
USC
Bradley
TCU
New Mexico State
Loyola Marymount
Rider

But now there is a possibility that one or two of those schools could drop out of the tournament (Rider and/or New Mexico State?).

There is also word leaking that they are also considering one or more D2 and/or D3 teams to round out the tournment that include-
Division II- American International College (Springfield, Mass)
Division II- Le Moyne College (Syracuse, NY)
Division III- Springfield College (Springfield, Mass)

I think we should get out if it comes to that.
Very disappointing how this tourney has shaped out/caved in.
Getting a chance to play N. Mexico was one of the highlights of the schedule!

Aren't we going to get another home game to finalize the non-conf. schedule?

there was never a chance to play New Mexico -- it was New Mexico State...
sadly -- the difference is about as big as Illinois/Illinois State

I'm not sure I agree. New Mexico St was a tourney team last year and nearly beat Final Four team Michigan St in the opening round. I can't think of the last time ISU did something like that... :D

Possibly, but who's to say that won't be a D II team?

I agree, though, that this tournament is a complete mess and extremely unorganized! Maybe we can simply keep the home date with Loyola Marymount and work something out with a couple of the other teams on our own.

Sorry - I meant New Mex. St.

It would still be a good opponent in a tournament.
BU and NMSU would likely be the best 2 in the tourney.

It's American International College
UMass will play two games as part of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at MassMutual Center in Saturday, Nov. 20 and Monday, Nov. 22. Those times and opponents have yet to be determines. Also, UMass will host a fourth and final game of the tournament at the Mullins Center on Nov. 24 against American International.

Any chance here to start organizing a River City Classic exempt tournament with some of these teams?

Bradley, TCU, USC, and LMM as an example all come to Peoria over the weekend and each play each other with games spread between new arena and PCC? Would there be some opportunity for an aggressive organizer to rope teams on our schedule into it to make it into a 6 or 8 team event by seeing if teams like EIU may be interested in travelling out to TCU or USC for a game?

Sounds like a great idea to me!

I'm getting a little worried about our schedule.
What's the latest on New Mex. St. & Rider with the H.O.F. Tipoff tourney?
