2011 BU commit Sean Harris

Da Coach

Here is a brief followup on BU recruit Sean Harris.

Sean is a 6'7" skilled forward from Rocklin, California, who played for Yuba college under Coach Doug Cornelius. He finished his one season at Yuba in 2008, and committed to Bradley for 2010, while planning to go on a 2-year hiatus to do a mission with the Mormon church.

For the last year, Sean has remained at home in California and dedicated his time to training for his foreign mission assignment. He has managed to stay active playing a little bit of basketball, and has even competed this summer in the Sacramento Pro Development League (SPDL), the same summer league Zach Andrews has played for in past summers.

He's playing for a team coached by Coach Cornelius, and containing several other former Yuba players, including a couple guys that Jim Les recruited- Mareceo Rutledge (UNLV) and Aaron Garner (Boise State).Sean is getting the opportunity to play against teams containing players who have played professionally, as well as other collegite players. Sean has played well- he scored 12 points and had 4 rebounds in their first game last Monday (6/8 ). His most recent game was Wednesday (6/10- no stats available yet), and he is scheduled to play again tomorrow night.

Sean has just found out where he is assigned to do his mission-- San Pedro, Honduras. We don't know when he will be leaving, but probably soon.

Congratulations Sean! Stay safe!

Sean's team in the SPDL played their 3rd game last night, and they won 128-110 to go to 2-1.
Sean was 4 for 6 from the floor, and he had 12 points. Their next game is next Tuesday.

His line was 4 of 6 from the floor, 1 of 2 from three, 3 for 3 from the free throw line, 1 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.

Sounds like Sean is doing great. I'm very surprised he's able to play in a league while he's on his mission. I've had a few LDS friends who have been on missions, and from what I understood they generally have very little free time, and usually only one day a week. Also, I seem to remember hearing that Sean Bradley didn't pick up a basketball during his entire mission.

But he has not actually started his mission yet. Once he does begin, he won't be playing much basketball.

Sean had a decent game Wednesday in the Pro-Am league in his team's 101-75 wion...6 pts, 6 rebs...most of the other players have years of college experience, and many are even college grads...
The team's leading scorer...Mareceo Rutledge is also from Yuba, but he's already 26 years old and signed to play pro ball!

Those of you who are inclined to do so, pray that things work out for Sean on his upcoming mission trip. He is headed to San Pedro, Honduras. The country of Honduras has been in chaos since a coup occurred. There is a lot of political and civic unrest there.

Well there is still time for the mission to be moved to another country????

I wouldn't think that the church would send people to Honduras given the current situation.

Found out that Sean Harris has left for his mission trip to Honduras, where he says he will be for 2 years. Good luck Sean!

That confirms that Sean will not be at Bradley in 2010 like was originally thought. We have changed the title of this thread to reflect that he will arrive at Bradley no sooner than 2011.

That also frees up one more scholarship for 2010.

Hmm. Kind of peculiar. Think the coaches are a little aggravated about this? I would be. I am sure they were made aware of things before we were, but how can you even get excited or count on a kid that's still 2+ years away?

BYU, Utah, and several other schools do all the time and are quite successful with the kids who do their missions first...
this gives BU two open scholarships for next fall, 2010, and then one more for 2011, barring any other changes/redshirts/losses.
By 2011 we will need to replace AW and Sam M, so we'll need to start lining up the prospects!
Maybe use one of the 2010 scholarships for a big name transfer that'll sit 2010-2011 and be ready for 2011-2012.

So Harris is not coming for 2 years? What exactly then was he doing all of last season? This means he is out of basketball essentially for 3 years. I know missions usually are for 2 years but why the loss of the 3rd year of basketball, I do not understand why this is not the 2nd year of his 2 year mission.

No cause for concern, we simply cannot LOSE what we did not HAVE, and we certainly haven't lost him to anyone else.
I don't understand the workings of the Mormon Missions, and I doubt any of us do, but at least we know Sean has been playing in a Pro-Am league in the interval.
Sean Harris has not signed a LOI and now won't until at least fall of 2010,
so I know we will not get any official confirmation from BU on this one.
I trust our staff know what to do with the scholarships.

My thoughts exactly.
