got me there - I guess I meant they're regional rivals - sorry...but now that I look at it they aren't all that close - 5-600 miles

bad news for some of the kids and coaches at Black Hawk East junior college...
"Black Hawk East JC (Kewanee campus) will end all athletics programs after this season. Teams will remain at the Moline campus."
 
Interesting column -- in 2015 there were as many DI Athletic Directors fired & replaced as there were head basketball coaches...!

Lusk at Missouri State and Giacoletti at Drake have to be on the hot seat. Lusk has been a huge disappointment and Giacoletti is coaching at a grave yard. Drake has to be the worse job in the MVC. It's a real shame because 40-50 years ago Drake was a top job in the MVC. That just goes to show how much the landscape of college basketball has changed. When was the last time Drake finished in the top 4 or 5 of the MVC for 3 consecutive years?
 
I still think Giacoletti might be successful, but he has to recruit more athletes. He inherited a real mess from Mark Phillips. So far, his recruits have been lower-level D1 caliber recruits (except Timmer), kind of like was Bradley's problems the last few years.
 
It has to be next to impossible to recruit quality basketball players to Drake. From an academic standpoint it is an outstanding school. From a basketball recruiting standpoint, at best, it gets the leftovers from Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. In addition, Iowa is not exactly a hotbed for high school basketball. Giacoletti is a quality coach, but he is in a very difficult situation. When he took the job, I was really surprised. I thought he could do better. I hope he can turn the program around. A lot of coaches have tried and failed. Not many coaches since Maury John in the 1960's and early 70's have left Drake for a better job.

In some ways I agree with you - it is hard..but...but not likely any harder than Cedar Falls, Peoria, or Green Bay
in just the past couple years we have seen numerous kids who'd have loved to stay & play in the midwest....
head 1000 miles away because nobody here gave them an offer...Brett Bisping (just put up 20 pts/12 rebs Tuesday, averaging 15.2 ppg, 8.9 rpg)), Nate Navigato (at Toledo, averaging 8 ppg, 3.4 rpg as a freshman), Gavin Block (went to Ohio - hitting 42% on 3-pt attempts), Marcus Poseley (from Rockford- plays at St. Bonaventure- averages 19.1 ppg), Jared Brownridge (went to Santa Clara but averaged 17 ppg as a freshman and now almost 20 ppg), and maybe even add Alec Peters, Max Bielfeldt, Keifer Sykes, Lawrence Alexander & others who were way overlooked by MVC recruiters...
All these guys are now showing or have shown themselves to be quality players that the midwest schools missed on, so I think Drake's gotta just keep trying - Keno Davis at Central Michigan & Hinson at SIU are showing it can be done with fairly obscure players

There always has been players that go away to schools, just as there are general students that go away to school. The challenge is when you don't get those players and still remain competitive. That doesn't change the fact Northern Iowa (Cedar Rapids) has leap frogged over Drake the past 25 years, Green Bay, has leap frogged over Drake during the past 20 years. As for Bradley, other than the last 40 years, they have had a better program than Drake.

I remember watching Drake's freshmen teams play against Bradley's freshmen teams at the fieldhouse, prior to the varsity games. Just as that has changed, the college basketball landscape has changed. As for Drake, after 40 years of a bottom tier standings program, there comes a point when it's not just the administration and coaches fault.
 
A couple new "Hot Seat" lists ...

Yahoo Sports' (and former ESPN guru) Pat Forde lists Louisville (Rick Pitino) and Oklahoma State (Travis Ford) as high profile jobs that might open up this spring

and a blogger who calls himself "CoachingChanges" lists Memphis, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Campbell, Presbyterian, Jacksonville State, and SEMO as the hottest seats

We have heard some mention of John Groce (Illinois) but I have to think they'll stick a little longer with him.
Doubt any MVC coach is currently on the Hot Seat but...yajusneverno -- Barry & maybe Paul Lusk would have been except they've silenced a lot of their critics with better than expected seasons.
 
FWIW here's a story on coaching and hiring & firing...

make what you want of it but it basically asks the obvious question...

why??...why if a coach (who plays at the DIVISION I level) has had TEN CONSECUTIVE horrible seasons (36-236 in that interval) plus is just NOW coming off an 0-28 season and currently riding a 51 game winless streak...
then why in heaven's name would this coach get an extension or be asked back again next year...

well - you figure out the answer if you want...but it clearly has a lot to do with the school not wanting a lawsuit..

they were 6-25 this year, only one NIT in the past 9 years,

NC A&T fired Cy Alexander, named Jay Joiner head coach

James Madison is said to be firing Matt Brady

Arkansas State - John Brady retiring
Drexel - Bruiser Flint fired

NC A&T - Cy Alexander fired - Jay Joiner hired

UNLV - Dave Rice is fired
Wisconsin - Bo Ryan stepped down - Greg Gard is Interim - will be named Head Coach 3/8/16

Interesting that three of the 7 openings so far were Black head coaches fired...(Flint, Thomas, Alexander) with Alexander already replaced by his Black assistant.
Perhaps good opportunities for the hiring a few more minority head coaches.
