VCU is moving quickly and not going for a big search. They are reportedly going to hire Mike Rhoades, currently the head coach at Rice, and a former VCU assistant coach. He took over a team 3 years ago at Rice that had won 5 & 7 games the previous 2 seasons, and he won 23 games this season.



Drake is reportedly interviewing head coaching candidates this week. Finalists are reported to include-
Craig Smith, currently head coach at South Dakota
Niko Medved, currently head coach at Furman
Jeff Rutter, interim head coach at Drake and former assistant under Ray Giacoletti

Drake fans are underwhelmed with the names. :roll:

6 years/$16 million???
That would be almost $3 million per year to coach Drake?? Baloney..

btw, that report came from some Omaha talk show host who is definitely not known for breaking stories...and he got it from a tweet by a complete nobody who claimed Smith (who gets about $160,000 at S. Dakota) was going to be paid $16 million for 6 years by Drake...Fake news

Cleveland State hires another retread- Dennis Felton, formerly head coach at Western Kentucky and Georgia. In his 6 seasons at Georgia (2003-2009), his record was 84-91, with 1 NCAA appearance. More recently, he has been an NBA scout and an assistant coach at Tulsa the last 3 years. Tulsa had a 15-17 record this past season.

36 spots to fill seems like a lot...and I know we're not fully done yet, but in most years there are 40, 50 and even more than 60 openings...so thus far this may be a little slower than usual.

Agree with the underwhelming assessment, though it remains to be seen if Medved can recruit and win there. But I would not have settled for Rutter either.

I agree about Rutter. Just making a point. Seems they didn't try too hard. Without knowing too much about Medved, I find it awfully hard to believe that Drake is going to compete for championships with this hire. Time will tell though!
