Rick Pitino being replaced by David Padgett at Louisville is officially the first head coaching change of the 2017-18 season.

But there has now been another Division I head coaching change for 2017-18.

Eddie Payne, head coach at University of South Carolina Upstate (member of the Atlantic Sun Conference) for the past 15 years announced today (Oct. 3) that he would step down. He cited persistent pain and complications resulting from ankle surgeries that made it difficult for him to be on his feet to coach and conduct practices.

University officials are discussing a role that would keep Payne associated with USC-Upstate Athletics once he steps away from his duties as a coach.

Kyle Perry, who has worked as an assistant coach under Payne for the last eight years, will serve as the interim head coach.

kind of an obscure note but...she is a BRADLEY GRAD!
BU grad Casey Stark (2010) has been named to the Quinnipiac University Basketball staff as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support.

Also Drake names new Athletic Director
http://godrakebulldogs.com/news/201...d-drake-university-director-of-athletics.aspx

Brian Hardin, deputy director of athletics at Marquette University and a Des Moines native will begin duties as AD at Drake in December.
He is a 2002 grad of Marquette University - and surely knows Brian Wardle who is a 2001 Marquette grad.

There's a strong rumor of a new name to add to the 2017-18 coaching carousel fired list....

Detroit's Bacari Alexander is suddenly MIA - only a little more than a year into his tenure there....(his 1st season was 8-23)
LINK

he has not been seen anywhere, hasn't been on the bench the past two games, and is rumored to be in some kind of trouble for something serious...
Now, Detroit admits he is "suspended" and it's a "personal issue" and they won't comment further on the situation.

..and of course - this morning the talk is...that they are working on how to get rid of the guy or buy him out as quickly and cheaply as possible with the least fallout...
One of the rumors kinda hints what the problem is and it's not too hard to guess given the current headlines...

I seem to recall seeing several people suggesting Bradley should hire the guy back in 2014 & 2015!

David Kaplan was just on in Chicago. It is being reported that Coach Alexander has a substance abuse and a gambling problem. This is serious.

He's apparently been tracked countless times to Windsor, Ontario which is considered the "Tijuana of Canada".

He is reportedly being advised to check into the same rehab facility that treated New Mexico State HC Chris "D&B" Jans. He has sought guidance and council from John Thompson and John Chaney according to Kaplan.

The hot seat just got a little hotter for a couple DI Head coaches...

Of course there's Bruce Pearl - I am sure Auburn is trying to figure out how to get rid of him without costing too much...
But in the MVC - the uproar on the SIU message board just ramped up a bit after the humiliating 40 point blowout of the Salukis at Louisville. Barry Hinson and Greg Lansing are the only two MVC coaches I have seen or heard much about recently. Everyone else is doing OK, altho oddly - a few grumbles over on the Missouri State board......the rest seem safe.
Two guys who were on a lot of people's HOT SEAT lists are off to good starts so maybe their spots are a little less hot...
Boston College's Jim Christian is 5-1 and Penn State's Pat Chambers is 5-0.

The 2017-18 list as we know it...

Detroit - Bacari Alexander - on temporary leave/suspension - decision on return pending..Jermaine Jackson interim
Louisville - Rick Pitino out - David Padgett in as interim
SC-Upstate - Eddie Paye out - Kyle Perry interim

You would think Danny Manning might be on the hot seat at Wake Forest. This is his 4th season as Head Coach at wake, and so far, he barely made it into one NCAA tournament field in year 3, but lost in the First round. This year, in his 4th season, he is off to a 2-4 start with losses to Georgia Southern, Liberty, and Drake, who was picked for last place in the MVC. Their 2 wins are over 1-5 Quinnipiac and UNC Greensboro. Their RPI is 255, worst in the ACC by over 60 spots.

But Wake Forest is happy with Manning, as the rewarded him today with a contract extension-

Another shocker....UTEP Head Coach Tim Floyd suddenly retired tonight immediately after his team lost 66-52 to Lamar for their 5th straight loss and they dropped to 1-5 on the season. Their only win was against a really bad Division II team, Louisiana College, who has not come close to beating anyone yet this year.-

Lamar 66 UTEP 52
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/scoreboard/_/group/50

This was Floyd's 8th season at UTEP, and things have not gone well for him. He took over a 26-7 team from previous coach Tony Barbee, and things went downhill from there. He was 15-17 last season, and 1-5 so far this season. His UTEP teams never made it to an NCAA Tournament in his previous 7 season. His teams did make it to 2 NIT's (2011 with Tony Barbee's players & 2015) and 1 CBI (2014), but they lost their opening round game in all 3 post-season tournaments.

Another surprising head coaching resignation- East Carolina University head coach Jeff Lebo has suddenly resigned. A press conference has been called for 4:30 Eastern Time.

This is Lebo's 8th season at ECU, and they are off to a 2-4 start. They have only had 2 winning seasons in the 7 previous years he has been their head coach, and none since 2012-13. There has been plenty of fan dissatisfaction, but this still comes as a bit of a surprise, especially considering the timing.

nope- the press conference was held and Lebo resigned, effective immediately
Michael Perry will be interim head coach

Charlotte (UNC-Charlotte) fires Mark Price

..

Charlotte - Mark Price fired after just 2+ seasons - Assistant Houston Fancher is interim
Detroit - Bacari Alexander - on temporary leave/suspension - has reportedly returned
Eastern Carolina - Jeff Lebo resigned - Michael Perry is interim
Louisville - Rick Pitino out - David Padgett in as interim
SC-Upstate - Eddie Payne out - Kyle Perry is interim
UTEP - Tim Floyd steps down - Phil Johnson is interim

Hot Seat talk is ramping up at some schools...

in the MVC there have been a few mentions of Barry Hinson & Greg Lansing..
but I read the other MVC teams' message boards, and Hinson, Lusk, Lansing & Simmons all have talk going of fan discontent...but with the MVC race just getting started, the determining factors include how they finish in the MVC race and, of course, there's always the economic end of it whether the schools have enough money to buy their coaches out.

But other schools prominently mentioned - UConn -
Kevin Ollie (Tom Crean mentioned as possible replacement), Pitt - Kevin Stallings, Iowa - Fran McCaffery

another head coach is suddenly out...

Dennis Cutts of UC-Riverside- he is just starting his 5th year there so he got more time there than Porter Moser got at ISU or Geno got at BU

Eastern Carolina - Jeff Lebo resigned - Michael Perry is interim
Louisville - Rick Pitino out - David Padgett in as interim

UC-Riverside - Dennis Cutts fired - Assistant Justin Bell is Interim
UTEP - Tim Floyd steps down - Phil Johnson is interim

Here's just a tally of how effective the firings are..
Charlotte is 1-2 since Price fired, they were 3-6 with him
Detroit was 2-3 in Alexander's absence and are 2-8 while he was head coach
ECU is 4-3 since Lebo was fired, they were 2-4 under him
Louisville is 10-3 currently without Pitino, but they were 11-2 at this point last year
SC-Upstate is 5-11 currently without Payne, they were 17-16 last year and 8-7 at this point last year under Payne
UC-Riverside was 5-9 when Cutts fired
UTEP has gone 5-3 since Floyd was fired, they were just 1-5 under Floyd

btw- more has leaked out about the reasons Bacari Alexander was "suspended" for a short period.

Drake's new AD is on the job and one of his first announcements is...

"One idea Hardin plans to copy soon is a T-shirt exchange.
Students can bring in a gently worn shirt of another college team
and exchange it for Drake Bulldogs-branded gear.
The other shirts will be donated to a local charity."

Hmmm...that idea sounds familiar...wonder where he got it from...
well, WIU has been doing it for a few years...
http://www.goleathernecks.com/news/...rn-t-shirt-exchange-returns-for-year-two.aspx

But it appears that maybe this school was doing it FIRST
"..new events including a T-shirt swap, where students could exchange their high school spirit gear for new Bradley T-shirts"

There are rumors coming from East Lansing, Michigan that Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo may be on the verge of immediate retirement, and head football coach, Mark Dantonio, may be close to resigning. With all the turmoil at MSU related to their disgraced trainer and now today's reports about numerous cases of sexual assault involving football players and possibly basketball players that were covered up, everyone's job is in jeopardy. Their President resigned Wednesday and their AD just announced his retirement today.

At least 16 football players have been accused of sexual assault at Michigan State under Mark Dantonio
