here's a new idea....

a kid from Cornell (Stone Gettings, 16.7 ppg/6.6 rpg) knows he can get enough of his academics done by December to graduate - so he won't play basketball next fall, then when he graduates in December, he can transfer and preserve the full year of eligibility to play somewhere else.

most schools encourage their players to enroll right away in summer before their freshman year then stay in school subsequent summers to get as much coursework done as possible and many then can get their degrees in 3 1/2 years - but then if they are easy pluckings for bigger schools to lure them in the transfer market- then smaller schools may be shooting themselves in the foot by helping the kids get all those summer hours...
 
He should play half the season at Cornell, graduate and then play half the season somewhere else. He could play with and against multiple teams in the same season.

Are grad transfers eligible to transfer in mid-season?

Though I can't find anything in the rule that specifically prohibits a midseason transfer, there are a couple parts of the grad-transfer rule that may make that impossible.
This is from the NCAA website-

Student-athletes who have graduated are subject to the same release requirements as undergraduates and must have at least one year of eligibility remaining.

In the case cited, if he played the first semester at Cornell, he would no longer have a full year of eligibility left, and therefore would not qualify for the grad-transfer exception. It may also be less likely that his school would give him a release from his scholarship if he left in mid-season, since the school would not be able to use it for another recruit at that point.

Serb- any part of a season played at a school counts as a whole season there...
as soon as he played one minute at Cornell - then leaves, he'd have exhausted his eligibilty...
Remember- Danny Granger - played 1 1/2 seasons here then transferred - but after sitting out a year at New Mexico, he then became eligible midseason there and played 1 1/2 seasons more as a Lobo. But his two "half-seasons" ended up costing Danny two full years of eligibility.

If the Cornell kid becomes a graduate and then transfers in December - he is eligible to play the entire 2019-2020 season at another school and thus is a far more attractive candidate for some offers from big schools.

The main difference between Granger and the Cornell kid is that the Cornell kid would be theoretically eligible immediately. Granger's two half season were in two different seasons. The Cornell kid's two half seasons would be in the same season. While DC's post clears this up either way it brings up an interesting hypothetical.,,

Say a player redshirts their freshman year and graduates in 3.5 years. Could they transfer midseason and play immediately since they would still have 1.5 years (more than a full year) of eligibility remaining?
 
In NCAA but nobody can transfer once the season starts and play at another school that same year ...altho a transfer from NCAA to NAIA is different

That surprises me some - except for the fact that under Matt Lottich - he did NOT seem to get the playing time a good 7-footer might expect in the MVC
He probably looks at next year and sees Valpo once again battling for the middle of the pack - and for some reason,
head coach Matt Lottich didn't even start him some of the time...and considering he LEADS THE TEAM in both
SCORING, at 12.2 ppg and REBOUNDING, at 5.7 ppg as well as leading in FG% (59.4%) and BLOCKS...
YET he only played 21.8 minutes per game!

that's a distant 6th on the team in minutes played per game - suggesting there's something going on that explains the coach's
decision to play the terribly unproductive Jaime Sorolla almost as much as Smits
In that last game against us- Smits was their leading scorer and the only thing that kept Valpo from finishing the game in the 30's or possibly in the 20's in scoring!
I don't think he's a BCS-caliber center but he ought to be playing 30-35 min per game and coring 20 ppg
 
I know, but he's not going to get drafted - so he's really just transferring

BUT the Derrik Smits transfer show the perils of having a kid REDSHIRT his first year even if it is the RIGHT move -
then you spend four years developing the kid and when he's set to have a breakout year next year -
then he leaves as a grad transfer and can play right away elsewhere.
That rule hurts way more than helps the midmajors.

one more transfer - former Bradley recruit Luwane Pipkins is leaving UMass as a grad transfer.
He has some pretty good numbers - 16 ppg, 5 rebs, 5 asst
but last year when he wasn't struggling with injuries he averaged 20 ppg and 43% from 3-pt...

part time starter - but kind of a tweener - not really a guard (hits only 31% from the arc) and not really a forward (1.9 rpg) which may explain why his playing time is limited...but there could be other reasons that will not be made public - maybe it's a girlfriend or "wants to be closer to home"? (Tennessee)
 
after the coaching change at UMKC all these players are requesting their release
....gonna be a big year for transfers...but then the NCAA kinda asked for this when they granted a whole bunch of transfers
last year - immediate eligibility - such as Da Silva at Missouri State, Reggie Scurry and others...

Jordan Giles (8.4 ppg)
William Mangum
Marco Smith
Kenneth Strawbridge

Wow I totally missed him getting POY in the Valley after dominating such weak competition, and leading Valpo to the tournament.

Derrik Smits did make the MOST IMPROVED TEAM - http://valpoathletics.com/mbasketball/news/2018-19/18921/smits-named-to-mvc-most-improved-team/
..so that means he did IMPROVE playing against MVC competition - let's see if he mimics the progress of Marcus Arnold, Dominic Olejniczak & Reggie Lynch who went from respected MVC starter to either deep sub or disgraced idiot on someone else's roster...
 
From what I saw of Smits, he does have nice skills and has the potential to be a much more dominant player, but is very passive and foul-prone. I doubt he will do better if he lands at a higher level school for his one grad-transfer year. I suspect he has heard from bigger schools in other conference and they are telling him he should transfer up, but in the end, I see him as a backup if he goes to a top 5 or 6 conference.
 
One time Bradley recruit then Drake commit ...then reopened and became a Bradley recruit again
but he landed at Ohio - Teyvion Kirk from Joliet West.
he averaged 15 ppg as a sophomore but is now leaving & wants to transfer.. likely aiming at a power-conference spot
