2019 Valley Recruits

Tornado, I’d be interested how you’d rank the Valley teams in order is signings so far. How do the BU signings look so far in comparison to the rest of the conference?

I think Kingsby, Mast, Ville. Gabriel & Thomas all can contribute right away -- not saying they will but I think they can...
I don't think any other team in the MVC has anywhere close to that many in this year's recruiting class who will contribute...
Maybe Loyola is worth mentioning but Bradley's group has won state championships, played the very best opponents in the nation,
and even played & excelled at a professional level....
..a couple teams like ISU have guys sitting out who have been there in college all year - but those are not 2019 recruits.

I think the best answer to your question will be easier at the end of the summer...

Probably most recruiting people would not rank Bradley's recruiting class very high because most of the recruits played little or none this past year, and a couple of them are Euro kids who nobody knows much about. Even for me to try to evaluate where they rank is difficult because of so many uncertainties-
>When will we find out where JaMir Price will be playing next season?
>Will Stephan Gabriel be here next fall? He played very little last year at 3 different prep schools. However, he was a qualifier out of high school, so he should be eligible.
>Antonio Thomas should be the one recruit that is most certain to be here this summer. He is said to have strong academics.
>Ville Tahvanainen and Rienk Mast could be playing with their national teams, so we don't know when they might get to Bradley. Plus, sometimes the NCAA eligibility Clearinghouse has problems with foreign kids' transcripts, or accepting their high school courses as acceptable for the required core classes. I doubt there will be academic issues, but if they don't get to Bradley until the fall, we've seen that have an effect in the past on recruits' training and conditioning.
>And Danya Kingsby hasn't played at all since playing for his juco in the 2017-18 season. We still don't know the reason or whether he is back to 100%. And we may not know his eligibility/playing status for months. Will the NCAA grant a waiver or two for him to regain his lost season and will he get a different waiver to be eligible immediately without having to sit out a year?

I’m more inclined to agree with da coach. We have unproven guys. But we also have guys from the less scouted sectors, namely the non-draft level Europeans and a prep guy who isn’t a power conference recruit. I won’t claim to be an expert on those levels, but comparing them to recent recruits, I’d estimate Mast is close to Van Bree, Gabriel is a more complete but less athletic McGlaston, and Tahvanainen is a better Kennel. Idk where to place Thomas and I can’t tell you how ready each of them are for this level, but I will put my name to the fact that at least 2 of those 3 will be quality contributors next year, for whatever that is worth. With what we have coming back, I think that will be enough to challenge for the valley championship. Adding a clear starter with our last scholarship would make us prohibitive favorites and make my previous prediction off, more like 1 of those 3 as contributors. Not having studied the other schools, I can’t have a 100% comparison. But I’d say we are only second to Missouri State in the short term, arguably no one long term.

UNI gets an unusual recruit that won't cost them a scholarship. Logan Wolf signed a National Letter of Intent in December during the early signing period for football (Dec. 19-21). He will play for the UNI Football team next fall.
But it was confirmed today that he will join the basketball team as soon as the football season is over.
He is a 6'5". 190 pound G/F who averaged 15.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg at Cedar Falls HS this past season and helped lead them to back-to-back Iowa Class 4A state championships.

Interesting discussion on the Drake board about a transfer guy they have named Roman Penn...
he's only played one season of college ball but is already listed as a junior and may have only two years remaining.
He may have lost two seasons to redshirting unless he can get a special waiver.......

-Penn graduated high school in 2016 - http://inbasketballsource.com/recrui...ate-roman-penn
-He spent the first half of 2016-17 at prep school - https://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...04-column.html
-At semester break 2016-17, he left prep school & enrolled at Siena but redshirted 2016-17, and did not play
-then 2017-18 he played 23 games at Siena- they went 8-24 (he averaged 9.7 ppg)
-at the end of 2017-18 he then left Siena and transferred to Drake
-because of the transfer he had to sit out & redshirted 2018-19 and should be eligible in 2019-2020
-so even tho he's only played one season, he might have just 2 seasons left to play at Drake but will probably ask for a waiver

That's the first new name since the signing period started but several schools still have scholarships to fill
He has a little brother Burak Djamgouz in Class of 2024 (current 8th grader) but the competition level at that age in Canada is suspect..
..also Missouri State's Isiaih Mosley has signed- https://twitter.com/WyattWheeler_NL/...94804412211201

..and what's with ISU?? They still have a bunch of open scholarships and have only signed one 2019 recruit (DJ Horne).

Valparaiso gets a commitment from Zion Morgan, a 6'5" shooting guard who is originally from Chicago Kenwood Academy, class of 2016. He spent the 2016-17 season at UNLV but played little and averaged just 2.8 ppg. He transferred to Wabash Valley Community College in Mount Carmel, Illinois. He did not play in 2017-18, and averaged 7.8 ppg this past season (2018-19) at Wabash Valley and shot 31.7% from three.
He had other offers from Albany and Norfolk State.

He will be eligible right away as a juco transfer.

ISU head coach Dan Muller has done a pretty good job recruiting talented kids to ISU in the past, but this year Muller and ISU fans might be getting a bit nervous by now.
My source at ISU reports that Muller keeps missing out on his top recruiting targets, and is still desperately trying to land 3 or 4 more players to fill his 3 open scholarships. They lost most of the team's talent from last year, and have only signed one recruit for 2019 so far (6'2" point guard D.J. Horne).

5 of the top 6 players from last season's team that had arguably less depth than anyone in the MVC are gone. They have the least amount of returning talent for 2019-20 than any MVC team except maybe SIU which is in a total rebuilding mode under new coach Bryan Mullins. Their significant returning players next season include 9 ppg/31.7% three point shooting guard Zach Copeland and 3.5 ppg walkon Matt Chastain. They do have four players who sat out last season (3 transfers and an academic redshirt) who are unproven.
Muller has been trying to add a couple junior college kids, but that effort suffered another blow today....
A couple days ago things were looking pretty good for ISU when a pretty good juco shooting guard named Derrick Cook narrowed his list of finalists to Illinois State, Eastern Michigan, and Jacksonville State-.
https://twitter.com/dc2skt/status/1120041017741402114

But today, he signed with Jacksonville State over the Redbirds.
https://twitter.com/VerbalCommits/st...39318379556864

Muller is still focusing on juco kids and available transfers.

Just an observation, but....
losing out to Jacksonville State - and it's rumored the kids' 2nd choice was EMU - so ISU came in 3rd..?
this is the point Muller has found himself in each of the prior years with little talent left out there yet desperately having to sign someone - so he takes chances on marginal kids like Jerron Martin 2 years ago and he didn't even make it thru the following season, or Abdou NDiaye last year who like Copeland wasn't even eligible..or kids who have serious arrest records (Akoon-Purcell, Brewer)....or for other reasons simply never can play (Romine)...or who for other reasons take off and leave (Lynch, Banyard, Griffin, Clarance)
or he goes for walk-on caliber kids who are great kids and they give you all they have but after a couple years, he runs them out as well, like Gassman.

ISU loses out on another of their top recruiting targets who chooses Western Michigan

and yet another of ISU's spring targets chooses elsewhere - this time they get beat out by Eastern Illinois University...

Dan Muller officially transitioning into desperation mode and looking everywhere for whoever is still available.

Then the latest recruit they just offered also already has a UC-Davis & a SIUE offer, so scratch him off, too...
