2024 Transfer Portal news

Belmont signs a player from the portal-- Brody Peebles, a 6'2" junior shooting guard from Liberty University. He has one season of eligibility left. He averaged 10.7 ppg nearly all in a reserve role. He shot 33.6% from three in 2023-24, but his 3-year career 3-point percentage is 37.6%.

I have a general question about the portal.Players that enter do they already have an agent or do they just represent themselves?

The portal is essentially functioning as the agent for most of the players who enter, while preserving their college eligibility. Under the NCAA rules regarding professionalism, they cannot actually hire a true agent, the kind that arranges professional playing deals, or they will lose their ability to play any more college ball.
There is such a thing as an NIL agent that they can associate with, who helps them find NIL opportunities and takes a percentage as a fee. But NIL agents can't represent the player in arranging professional playing opportunities.

Ok,was just curious how the players navigate through all the contacts they receive. If what you heard about Hickman he must have had some idea what he wanted to do or where he wanted to go before he left.

Yes, it is all done through a sophisticated online system that connects the player with the teams that are interested, and allows them to set up further communication with the teams they choose to talk to.

Thanks coach, was curious how all that was done.

The portal is also password protected and only coaches and compliance officers at schools are given access. From what I've been told, the way it works is players have to fill out forms and give them to the school's compliance officer, who then enters them into the portal. The NCAA is very guarded about security. They threaten to revoke access if anyone's password is misused.
There are no media people who have access. So anyone listing names that are in the portal is getting them from other sources like the players themselves, their social media, or some other source. Usually the players want their name to be known in the portal, so they or someone representing them will message media people and internet recruiting sites.

Former Missouri State big man NJ Benson, who Bradley recruited in the portal, has just committed to DePaul.
I guess he's going for the NIL money with a horrendous perennial last place team instead of wanting to play with a good team.

So disappointed. I thought we had a real shot at a guy like Benson.

Bryan Mullins prob working overtime on all the MVC guys like NJ, Hickman, Alston- lots of instant playing time & they’re working hard to raise NIL $

I think Holtmann is going to build a winner there. He's a good coach/recruiter. However, Benson against Big East bigs is going to really test him.

Here is an actual photo of the transfer portal. (Are there any 1960s sci-fi TV watchers here?) TT.jpg
