3 MVC games Saturday, Dec. 29

This December 29th game for Northern Iowa gives Northern Iowa a "edge" over the Braves come their January 2nd game. Northern Iowa will not be "as rusty" as I expect the Braves to be on January 2nd - with 11 days since the Braves last game.. Remember the Eastern Illinois game.... The Braves had a 11 day lag since their previous game before playing Eastern Illinois. Wardle "how are you preparing for this first Valley "home" game and to assure the "rust" for not playing in the last 11 days is "not" there or at least minimized ?

Altho no MVC games last night - former BU opponent UIC upset reigning Horizon Champ Wright State on the road with a buzzer beater in OT.
UIC freshman Travell Washington was unrecruited out of high school - so he did an extra year of prep school and still had just one offer - UIC
He is a skinny 6-9 kid who roams the perimeter and tends to shoot only 3-pointers. He's averaging only 1 reb despite starting all but one game but he was 4-6 last night from the arc.
So far in his freshman year, he is hitting 48% on 3-pointers and he won the game for them last night with a career high 14 including the buzzer beater.

The first 2 games were easy wins for the MVC teams-

Drake beat Division II McKendree 98-70-

Valparaiso easily beat provisional Division II Purdue University Northwest (formerly Purdue Calumet) 97-61-

Northern Iowa is trailing Stony Brook 63-53 with under 4 minutes left in the game-

UNI Head Coach Ben Jacobson has been mixing up his starting lineup the last 3 games. Wyatt Lohaus and Isaiah Brown who started UNI's first 10 games did not start tonight for the 3rd game in a row. Instead, Tywhon Pickford and Miles Wentzien, who both came off the bench the first 10 games, started for the 3rd game in a row. UNI is 5-7 coming into the game tonight

Northern Iowa loses a "buy game" to Stony Brook 73-63 to fall to 5-8.
Stony Brook played without their best player- Akwasi Yeboah, who is injured. He is Stony Brook's leading scorer (18.6 ppg) and rebounder (6.9 rpg).

Ben Jacobson's experiment of benching Lohaus and Brown in favor of Pickford and Wentzien the last 3 games doesn't seem to be working. They have lost 2 of the 3.
And Wyatt Lohaus was UNI's leading scorer tonight with 23 points off the bench, while new starters Tywhon Pickford had just 1 point and Miles Wentzien had 3 points.
Overall, UNI has lost 6 of their last 8 games, and one of the 2 games they won was a come-from-behind win over Division 3 University of Dubuque in which they trailed by double digits in the 2nd half. Their next game is at Bradley next Wednesday, January 2.
