#8 Xavier vs Cincinnati rival matchup brawl

The video description says Dec. 10th, 2010 but it was actually just a few hours ago.

What the hell was #8 Xavier thinking? They could be without half their lineup or more for 5+ games or more, hell, could be 10 games or more. Dang near impossible for a high mid major to get in the top 10. Those coaches have to be livid, those players will regret this once the tempers simmer.

I doubt they'll be ranked in the top 15 or 20 by mid January.

There were a couple Xavier players throwing wild punches, and several Cincinnati players swinging their fists. One of the Cincy bench players tried to stomp on Xavier player Kenny Freese as he went down when Yancy Gates sucker punched him. It won't be hard to pick out the worst offenders, however, most of the Cincy bench came onto the floor, as did several of the Xavier bench. More amazing is the statement of the Xavier player in the postgame press conference trying to justify the fight and proudly saying they "gangsters".

Also amazing- here are the game stories from the Cincinnati and Xavier websites. They don't bother to even mention the fight, or the fact that the game ended with 9.4 seconds still on the clock.

Looked like Wells started with the hard push and then Gates did the sucker punch during the shoving....Gates should be gone for the season IMO and Wells for several games

Anyone see the post game press conference quotes from Xavier players? Classless.

They could not have handled that any worse. Whoever decided to let them even get in front of a camera without very specific instructions needs to be fired. This might sound over dramatic, but I have to imagine that if something like this went down between BU and ISU, our players would be kept more in check than making comments about being "gangsters rather than thugs." Did Xavier BB not have anyone with any kind of a PR degree in the building?

Maybe

I doubt any of them will regret it. Much to worried about "cred" and the "aint nobody going to do that to me" mentality. The guy who threw the sucker punch and the guy who tried to kick him when he was on the ground should be suspended a LONG time. This looked like one of those Chicago Public League brawls they were having a couple years ago. Seemed like one broke out every weekend. Just a street fight indoors.

I like the stance Cinci Coach Cronin took. I would hope that BU would take the same stance if an embarrassing incident like this ever took place.

You can take the baller out of da hood, but, ....

So much for organized sports creating leadership skills, discipline, respect for authority etc.

The inmates are now running the aslyum in college sports.

Both basketball programs have demonstrated they should not be participating in the NCAA.

If the Ncaa goes by its rules for fighting, both teams will forfeit their next game .Any player who particapated or left the bench should have to sit the next game, hence the forfeit. It will be interesting to see what they decide. Can't wait to see if they go by there own rules. I know how I'm betting.

The NCAA would not suspend all the players at once, which would force a team to forfeit their next game. They would stagger the suspensions to allow the teams to play their games.

I would like to see the universities make a strong statement be suspending ALL players involved (in addition to NCAA suspensions) and forfeit a minimum of one game.

Won't happen. A forfeit hurts too many others who are innocent. It hurts the team and the other players on the team, it hurts the other team who loses a game due to forfeit, and it hurts a lot of people who's jobs depend on the games being played. Any punishment doled out needs to be directed toward the offending players.

Example- Cincinnati's next game is at Wright State. Should Wright State be penalized by losing a home game and having to refund thousands of people's money?

Good point. DC. It should be interesting to see how the universities handle this.

They should have to pull random students from intramural leagues or club teams to field a team then.

I think you are joking here, but in case not, this option isn't a possibility either. Every NCAA athlete must be cleared by the NCAA for academic eligibility, and also get cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse to certify their amateurism and all other eligibility issues. And universities can only play athletes that have already been cleared. Those steps take weeks/months.

Xavier to hold a presser right now.....

It should be interesting to see who and how long these players get suspended. I believe though that there will be room for a mid-major team in the top 25 sometime down the line that would have otherwise not been there!

unfortunately yes it was a joke, but i feel like the schools should have to do more than it will allow for them to be fair to the next team they play. I think this fight and the press conference after need to be addressed with severity and that a few guys getting a few game suspension isn't as big of a deal as it should be.
