#8 Xavier vs Cincinnati rival matchup brawl

Each school suspends 4 players-
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/...-brawl?odyssey=tab|mostpopular|text|FRONTPAGE

I suspect the conferences (The A10 and Big East) may have more to say about the suspensions. There were clearly more players who left hte banch area that just these 4 that got suspensions from each team.
Also, Yancy Gates should have gotten a harsher penalty than anyone else for throwing the ball at a Xavier player, then throwing several punches. IMO, he deserved more than the others.

there should also be sanctions for the teams - neither team's personnel did much to stop the trash talking and the bench-clearing..

The penalties handed out are pretty weak -- most of those involved in the brawl get nothing - not even a warning...then a few players get a one game suspension..and Gates and a couple others get several games..

Yet another brawl in college basketball...

..and it comes as no surprise that it happened in a game involving Larry Eustachy and Southern Mississippi - playing at Arizona State...

With about 12 minutes remaining in the game, some trash talking erupted then Southern Miss' Torye Pelham pushed Pateev with both hands right up in his face...

Pateev retaliated with a punch and a fight erupted...both players getting ejected.
Several Southern Miss players also left the bench area to join the fight but did not get penalized...

Nice last second shot though

another brawl - this one a high school game and many fans attempting to get involved...

one question I have is why were there armed riot police with dogs & flak jackets there in the first place???

doesn't that seem like maybe someone knew this was going to happen and didn't warn the public?

I guess if I went to a high school basketball game and as I walk into the gym, saw about a dozen uniformed and armed police and even guys with flak jackets and riot dogs - I might just turn around and go see a Cincinnati/Xavier game!

One more link - I ran across this one - a high school game from near Springfield - small gym...
and several very VERBALLY ABUSIVE fans sitting right behind the visitors' bench are asked to leave the premises (at about 2 minutes into this video)..
then an ongoing string of bickering fans parade down to right behind the visitors' bench until one male fan grabs another fan in a choke hold (right at about 3 minutes)
then an all out melee starts with visiting players even trying to help out their embattle parents & fans
After several more minutes order is restored and play resumes.

An interesting result from the Xavier-Cincy brawl...

Xavier University is requiring all students who were there MUST attend a "reflection session"...
if they ever want to go to another basketball game

seriously -- I guess they have a way to verify who was there - maybe they had to validate their student ID's to get tickets..
but here's the requirement..

"An email from Xavier Dean of Students Luther G. Smith
sent Thursday to Xavier students indicates that
students who were in attendance for the Musketeers’ Crosstown Shootout
win against Cincinnati will be required to attend a “reflection session” about
the brawl that occurred in the game’s closing moments
in order to attend Xavier basketball games for the remainder of the season...

'The student section contributed to the hostile atmosphere that charged the
arena with unsportsmanlike conduct through unacceptable chanting, verbal
expletives, and objects being thrown onto the arena floor. As a Jesuit,
Catholic university, the behaviors demonstrated are not becoming of its
students and is in conflict with the mission, values, and standards of Xavier
University.'

The letter indicates that students who were in attendance for the game
must attend one of three reflection sessions next week. Students who don’t
attend one of the sessions will be ineligible to receive men’s basketball home
game tickets for the remainder of the 2011-12 season."

Typical Politically Correct mindless drivel. This is like punishing all your children just because one of them misbehaves.

Creighton is the same type of school and maybe they should have their students attend behavior classes as they are without a doubt the most obnoxious students I have witnessed in ST.Louis, several of them get kicked out of the Scott Trade Center every tour. because they do not know how to handle their liquor.

I think I heard that they canceled this idea. They handled this whole thing about as poorly as can be. Thug U has moved across town apparently.

wouldn't it have been interesting...
it won't happen now since Cincy lost last night...
but had they won and advanced to the Elite Eight...
and if Xavier beats Baylor and advances..

these two brawl-tested team MIGHT have met in the FINALS for the National Championship!
