Anyone watch UCLA last night?

UCLA played Washington...and I didn't think Washington played especially well...a lot of the game was just garbage time with no-name scrubs,
but Washington had a 23 point halftime lead and cruised over UCLA with leads of 20-30 pts.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/spo...l-huskies-give-29point-beating-to-bruins.html

UCLA is a bad mid-major...seriously!!

it is truly hard to believe that they have 7 Top 100 players on their roster (two players are 5-Star players and two more are Top 50)
and a full 13 players are top 150!!
how can a coach like Ben Howland not get this team to win?

Same goes for UNC - how can all those McD AA'a play so bad? (or are they coached bad?)

When you have no beef in the middle, a weak point guard, more injuries in one season than BU has had in the last 3 or 4 years combined, and play in one of the top conferences in America it is not too hard to see this happen. I have no doubt that UNC will be back stronger than ever next year. Roy has proven over 20+ years that he knows how to coach.

Have you read my posts? I have been saying it all along...How good are these "hall of fame" coaches when they have to coach what apparently are midmajor talented basketball players (who are actually 100% McDonald All Americans and 5 star players)? I know that it also about chemistry, etc, however, ALL these players are 5 star? Even as freshman 5 star players are supposed to dominate, right? (look at Wall of Kentucky). Williams knew ahead of time that his top players were going pro. Did he prepare? Apparently not. One of NC's losses was to a 200+ RPI team. What is the NC Fan board saying?

Apparently, like BU, UCLA and UNC don't have enough talent this year to compete with the talent the teams they play against have.

If UCLA and UNC tank/stumble 3 years in a row, or 7 out of 8, like BU has, I suppose I could support an opinion that the coaches should be held accountable...either poor coaching or poor recruiting....

On a positive note, with UCLA and UNC apparently on the outs for the NCAA, and maybe even the NIT, it opens up slots for a successful Mid Major this year, like WSU or ISU, to get a sniff at the Dance or NIT.

I watched them play at Washington State Thursday night...they looked like world-beaters. Just like Bradley, they are a total jeckyl and hyde team, and you never know what you are going to get from UCLA each night. UCLA pretty much named their score at WSU Thursday night, and USC won at Washington. Then Saturday, USC lost at WSU and UCLA got crushed at Washington. You never know what you are going to get from one night to the next with them.

Yes...any day Roy or Ben want to take the BU job I'll be the first to say welcome. I think BOTH these guys have solid resumes that kinda speak for themselves.

I'd take Ben in a heart beat! Roy I just hate the way he whines. He also looks to much like Deputy Dog!

this story says there was some turmoil on the coaching staff at UCLA that helped create some of their problems this year...
http://www.bruinsnation.com/2010/4/12/1417560/thoughts-and-info-on-coaching

One assistant was asked to leave...
so now UCLA coach Ben Howland needs to fill a coaching vacancy, and he's set to pick the father of one of his top recruiting targets...sound familiar??

one other candidate is the old Kelvin Sampson assistant who has a track record of more NCAA violations than just about anyone else, Ray Lopes..
but holding true to Royce Waltman's words...it doesn't matter how much you cheat - you'll always get hired again...

Iregardless..Roy had 7 McDonald All americans all healthy at one time ready to play. Most every school would die for one McDonald all american..As far as no beef in the middle, a weak point guard..sounds like poor recruiting by the head coach to me. A good coach can't get results with 7 McDonald all americans??? Come on......The ACC wasn't all that tough top to bottom this year..even Duke had the easiest draw for a 1 seed in the tourney. I question how good a coach Roy Williams is today, especially if he had to coach mid-major caliber players.

Where's the evidence that the son is one of Howland's top recruiting targets? The kid is a class of 2013 prospect, who doesn't appear to be particularly highly rated as far as I can tell. Moreover, the father has prior DI head and assistant coaching experience. I don't see anything to support the suggestion that this is another situation in which a job is given to someone close to a prospect in order to sign the prospect.

You're probably right. Roy's probably not a very good coach and may have lost a step.....

Yeah, it must be tough coaching at schools where you can practically have any player you want by leveraging someone else's success...

The guy's just a TERRIBLE coach.

Roy Williams has a wonderful history at both Kansas and North Carolina. I just seemed to me that his overall performance at North Carolina was a little "strange" last year. He got a lot of negative press as he was taking on the opponents fans, he had a questionable season in terms of his teams overall performance, he couldn't beat a middle of the pack Dayton team in the NIT finals, he didn't make the NCAA tournament...and all this with 7, I repeat 7, McDonald All Americans. And, I would venture to guess that the rest of his players were probably 4 and 5 star players. Again, I ask..How do you think that he would do with no McDonald All Americans and a team filled with mid-major caliber players? Logic tells me....terrible!!

Boy -- I hate to rehash this thread from nearly a year ago -- but did you see that UCLA lost yesterday AT HOME to Montana, 66-57, and were outrebounded, committed more turnovers & fouls, and had fewer assists and way worse shooting (52% vs. 31%)?

UCLA has now lost four in a row, a couple to mid-majors....
and the excuses we heard last year about injuries and turnover of talent just don't wash this season...

And I recall some right here on this board wondered what they're doing going hard after a junior college point guard from John A. Logan juco who averaged 14.5 pts, 4.8 asst...who wasn't previously even ranked in the Top 200 juco kids until UCLA went after him.

This year -- everyone on their team is healthy and they have a complete lineup of BLUE CHIPPERS...4-Star and 5-Star recruits...(except Jones)
In fact -- over the past four years, they've landed 14 kids who were 4-Star or 5-Star (inside the top 75) and only one went early to the NBA (Kevin Love)..
So -- what's the excuse now...

This article speculates that head coach Ben Howland could be fired before the season is over...
"Their point guards (Lazeric Jones and Jerime Anderson) stink....
..That’s not good enough in UCLA. Howland’s Final Four run undoubtedly earned him another season
with the Bruins, but it’ll be one without any room for error.
If he lasts that long."

http://beyondthearc.nbcsports.com/2010/12/06/deja-vu-all-over-again-for-ucla/

UCLA was 14-18 last year, in a weakened Pac-10, and are already 3-4 this year...with a fairly soft schedule except for Kansas.

PS-- UCLA has the sons of two different ex_NBA players (Alex Schrmpf, Jack Haley) and the great grandson of John Wooden on their squad, plus they
also have the two 5-Star Wear brothers, (Travis, Tyler) who just transferred fvrom North Carolina!
They also have a high school teammate of Sean Harris, Brendan Lane of Rocklin HS.

Sounds like a great opportunity for JL to move up! He could come in and right the ship for UCLA. With his recruiting savy, run and gun 'Showtime' offense and coaching ability in the face of injuries, he's a perfect fit. His No Cal connections would help as well. By any chance, do they need a new stadium or practice facility? Bruin fans must be salivating for a change, unless of course, they are afraid of change! Just sayin'....

So -- what's the excuse now...

This article speculates that head coach Ben Howland could be fired before the season is over...
"Their point guards (Lazeric Jones and Jerime Anderson) stink....
..That??™s not good enough in UCLA. Howland??™s Final Four run undoubtedly earned him another season
with the Bruins, but it??™ll be one without any room for error.
If he lasts that long."

I missed the game last night, but from what I've seen, this UCLA team is very talented, albeit inconsistent. This was their first really bad loss, and they just about beat Kansas at Kansas a few days ago (and might have except for that terrible call at the end of the game). They are a pretty young team and should improve as the season progresses. I think they end up an NCAA team, and I don't think Howland is going anywhere.

By the way, Love is not the only player to leave early in the last four years. They lost Westbrook the same year (after his softmore season) and Holiday the year after. the Wear brothers are also irrelevant to the team's success this year, as they are not eligible this season.
