Appeal Denied - Wilkins will not play this season

And they wonder why some kids never finish school and the gang population is at an all-time high

This kid is just trying to go to class and play some basketball:mad:

This entire entity needs to get it together and focus on helping the student population and those who WANT to be there and stop helping THOSE who don't!

Can't say I disagree with you. I think we're all in agreement that the LOI and associate's degree are what's most important.

My question is since he is not playing ball and it does not look like he will be playing and the reason he took the JUCO route was to play ball. Can he just transfer to BU after the semester ends and be eligible for next year? I can't see why not.

$$ and time and more NCAA?
Ruff, I believe, was a non-qualifier (due to ACT not certifying) and had to complete 1 year at BU befoe being able to play. I think Ruff was then responsible for paying for tuition, and when Ruff played, he had to always remain on track to graduate in 4 total years of school and get special NCAA permission to play his 5th year. (which I think is more restrictive than a typical qualifier)

SFP, I could be wrong but I don't think he went to a JC just to play ball. He was deemed a non qualifier because some grades in his old country didn't pass the NCAA clearinghouse. Hence the reason for JC.

He could have went directly to BU as a non-qualifier. I believe non-qualifiers can be on scholarship but cannot play in order to concentrate on their academics. The JUCO route gave him the benefit of playing along with the ability to overcome the NCAA clearinghouse.

Does he have to go through the NCAA Clearinghouse again? I hope that his case through them has been settled!

Once he gets his Associates Degree that becomes a non issue with the Clearinghouse. He would be good to go. What scares me is the NJCAA has declared him ineligable to play all season but the NCAA just gave him a 5 game suspension. That just doesn't make sense to me . Hope he signs next week and this whole mess just goes away. Will we hear more bad news from the NCAA when they hear he isn't going to a BCS school?? Good luck JW can't wait to see you in Carver in a BU uniform.

I'd feel much better if he were to go to ICC. Why not keep him close to home? It's pitiful the way he has been penalized twice and he hasn't even stepped on the court. If this were Duke, he would be in uniform and practicing right now. The NCAA is a joke! Let's just get him signed next week and worry about the rest later. Can he practice with the team still? If not, let him load up on classes and get graduated so we can enjoy a full 3 years on the Hilltop. Good luck John! You will be welcome with open arms in Peoria.

nope, nope, nope...

let's settle this once and for all...
HE CAN NOT be admitted to BU since the credits he had in Belgium cannot qualify as a high school degree..
thus he is not and cannot get into Bradley unless he transfers in from juco with an Associates Degree.

Last time..
--John Wilkins DOES have athletic clearance to play D-I ball with a 5-game penalty
http://www.pjstar.com/sports/x1009171078/Reynolds-Belgians-status-still-uncertain
--John Wilkins DOES NOT have academic requirements necessary to be admitted with "Initial Eligiility" to a four year NCAA college.
http://ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/037...ERES&CACHEID=037d9e804e0b8ac79cf0fc1ad6fc8b25

now the 180 degree opposite is true per NJCAA (a completely different and separate organization from NCAA)..he does have the ability to be admitted academically and is on track to get his degree, but he is NOT athletically qualified due to professionalism.

Thanks for clearing that up, T.

Listen, this whole thing is frustrating for us, but can you imagine how bad it is for JW? I hope he can at least practice with that team to keep sharp.

Plus, this way he can hardcore work on academics so that there will be no issues with getting his Associates in time. Once the LOI is in, this will all go away.

Though I am bummed I don't get to roadtrip on Friday!

in the end, here's the good in all this...no matter what the "powers that be" are trying to do to ruin JW's career,
if he can just get that Assoc. Degree, he can be at BU and play basketball in the 6th game of the 2010-2011 season,
then have a minimum of 3 years of eligibility remaining.

I don't know the exact time line for all this so please bear with me....what I would like to know is what happened from the time JW first got excepted into school, found a place to live, signed up for classes, started to get in shape for basketball, attended classes, started basketball practice, and finally got to the day of the FIRST GAME only to find out that he was not eligible to play this season??? Why did it take months for somebody to decide that he couldn't play this year? Did I miss something?

Anyway....hit the books John and sign the LOI next week. Can't wait to see you play at BU!

Go Braves!!

This is OUTRAGEOUS!!! How does this happen that the NJCAA comes in right in the nick of time to prevent John from playing? He's been taking classes there for almost a year, with the intent to play basketball this year. How convenient that he is enrolled there for 11 months, then the NJCAA comes in days before his first game and declares him ineligible? This is absolutely rediculous. John has been working hard for 11 months to get to play on this team, and then is denied at the last minute. Talk about crushing someones hopes. All we can hope for is that John signs his letter of intent, gets his associates, and gets 3 years at BU.

Well said....I'm stoopified myself. If I were John and his family I would be livid at SOMEONE. I guess maybe we have to take basketball out of the equation when looking at this and look at it purely from an educational standpoint.

Nobody is denying his "right" to get an education.....but OTOH he could have stayed closer to home and got the same degree vs traveling to Iowa has someone made a timely decision.

It stinks.....not a big conspiracy person but it makes you wonder. Is someone calling in a favor or putting some pressure on somebody to derail this kids coming to BU...probably not but jeesh.

Back to CT's point.....how in the world did it take THIS flippin long to declare him ineligible. My goodness.

Hopefully the PJStars fine sports reporters can due some serious investigating into this mess. The kid is NOT a Pro. He simply wants to get an education and get some help paying for it.

What advantage did he gain by playing a few games in a Pro league (if thats what it was) ?

THe NJCAA is wrong plain and simple. I can understand and accept the 5 games the NCAA gave him and to me THAT should set the prescedence in this case. How can some Juco morons suspend him from...I'm sorry...silly arse Juco ball when the NCAA will eventually allow him to play Big time Div 1 College hoops. Get real NCJAA......

No kidding.....I mean did it really take until NOW, like you said, just before the ref through the ball in the air to make this call. OUTRAGEOUS. It stinks I tell ya it stinks.

Now I am not the smartest fish in the sea:!: But NOT For ONE MINUTE do I believe that everyone involved in trying to help this kid get all his ducks in order and tickets punched, so he could play this year in Iowa, get his degree, then come to BU next year, didn't seached and believed this matter or posibility of, by the NJCAA was taken care of before he enrolled there:!: Something has Happen to change this around to where we are today:!: I'm on record here as saying Dog, it is a God D--- CONSPIRACY:!::evil: Things like this just don't happen the way this has:!: People with-in the NCAA and the NCJAA know where this is coming from and WHY:!:

I pray that REALLY isn't the case but the timing REALLY makes a person wonder....before I jump TOO far to any conclusions though I hope someone with the power and/or ability to gets to the bottom of this story, does.

I'm confident someone will try..NOT as confident we will find out the truth.

Come on...a JUCO college denying a kids priveledge to play ball. Help me understand the logic...no really...help me.

OK...you REALLY want to be upset. Go read Dave R. most excellent explanantion of the facts as he understands them on the PJ Star board.

UNREAL.....

13 minutes.....13 flippin minutes.

What's amazing is that this is an instance where I think the NCAA got it right. At least a little bit right anyways. 5 games is nothing. If they want a little more 'umph' on his transcript, fine. But 5 games and 3 years of eligibility is nothing. This NJCAA ruling is unbelievable. Who are they crappin'? No one who can get paid to play basketball is wasting their time toiling in high school gyms playing JUCO basketball.

Quite bringing logic and common sense into this issue....it doesn't fit in with the rest of this story.:)
