Athletic Dept. Changes

iMO, Here,s how the much needed changes should go. First of all, get rid of MC and appoint an interim AD, probably Brett Burchette. FIRE Geno at the end of the season. Appoint a new President by the end of May. Hire a new AD. Hire a new men's bb coach(Jerrance Howard?). Leave soccer and cross country alone. Hire new coaches for Women's bb, Vollyball, Baseball. Review all positions in the Ath. Dept. to determine if they are truly needed. Then....Appoint a fan council (5 or 6 people max.) to meet with the AD regularly to provide fan based advice, council, & suggestions. T....I think your post on this subject was excellent but we need to move ahead without delay as soon as the season is over.

Can't say I disagree but here's a rough total of what it might take to buy out all the contracts of those people you cite whose deals go well into the future...

(estimates are based on an understanding of what's been said or reported about the lengths of various contracts - although not known for sure)

The President - $3 mil (4-5 yrs at $700K)
The AD - $600K (2-3 yrs at over $200K)
The MBB Coach $1.5-2.5 mil (2-3 yrs at $700K - plus BU is on the hook for at least $400 of his buyout from Kent St.)
The WBB Coach $300-400K (2-3 yrs)
The Baseball coach $300-400K (2-3 yrs)
VB coach and any others that might have to go... ~$500K
....Total cost to buy them out -- ~$8 million -- hope us Core Group guys have deep pockets
Then cost to search & hire all new replacements = - uh....WORTH EVERY PENNY

BTW - one more great mane out of Chicago that would make a good choice for assistant coach...
Tom Kleinschmidt....head coach at DePaul Academy (the old Gordon Prep) who has turned their program around overnight, who has incredible basketball knowledge & connections, and who everyone in the business respects...
He also is as highly respected in the world of Chicago AAU basketball as anybody - and the last guy we got from Gordon Tech didn't do so bad.

It would be costly to do as I suggest but we must dig our way out of the hole JG, MC , & others have created...and do it as quickly as possible. First of all, some tough negotiating will be required to reduce the cost as much as possible. Then, the BU trustees will probably have to bite the bullet and use some of the endowment. If they move quickly, I believe fans will come back and expenses can be reduced to help offset this cost. Another possibility would be a "Rebuild Bradley" fund drive. $8 million is not a very large fund drive and the $$ could be raised fairly quickly, IMO. Also, some of the big donors that JG ran off could be contacted to determine if they would now be interested in donating again to help get things back on track. The key here is to get moving ASAP and not have any long delays.

Schools like Wichita, Creighton, Dayton, Xavier, Butler, and even Bradley (back before 2010) were regularly FILLING their stadium and had outstanding revenue, donations, and support - EVEN IN LOSING YEARS...
They have really great fan bases that were WORTH holding on to and bending over backwards to try to please...
but, unfortunately, Bradley has blown off that off and treated the fans horribly...

I have been saying for YEARS - they cannot blame all this on drop in enrollment, bad economy, poor weather, or like KW keep trying to hang the problems on AD's who left SEVEN years ago when we still had almost 10,000 per game - or coaches who left FOUR years ago after one single losing season in the previous six..

This mess is directly the fault of poor leadership, recent irresponsible spending & waste, lousy marketing, bad moves that have offended long time fans, etc...
The people in charge at Bradley have chosen to align themselves with a few of the disgruntled fans who hated JL and with an unpopular local media that just doesn't command much respect any more...instead of listening to the other 10,000 long time loyal fans.
All of this is reversible - but we need to get on it!!!

I don't know how many people have actually seen and read Geno's contract. I doubt many. I'm sure there are a lot of escape clauses for all parties involved. In a total buyout, which is very rare in today's world, seldom is the entire amount due in one lump sum. It is almost always distributed in deferred payments over quite a length of time. This provides financial relief for the party paying the payout and a tax shelter for the person receiving it. As for Glasser, I would be willing to bet that her buyout was applied to her pension and will be disbursed over several years. Thus BU will not have to come up with a huge lump sum at one time.

I would imagine Cross and Ford will be bought out first. The other sports, while changes need made, can wait. They are not revenue producing sports and if they continue to lose the next year or two, it shouldn't effect the bottom line financially. Men's basketball is a totally different animal. Changes must be made and made soon.

I think we should make the NON-standard move....
HIRE Jerrance and give the guy a chance...I am willing to forgive a minor misdemeanor - I strongly believe most fans will feel likewise -
(heck - most of our team's has worse than that this year and the media rallies behind them!!)

BTW - since the last four years have shown us that if the PJS favors it, then it has been BAD for Bradley - thus if the PJS wants to torpedo Jerrance - then I feel it's the exact move we need to make!!!
Do we want the PJS picknig our next coach? heck no, they have been so misguided it's laughable. They just got done with another 6-page story about how great the last 4-5 years have been??

I think the combination of Chris Reynolds & Jerrance Howard plus a strong and independent thinking President are the moves that will get Bradley back to being at the top of the MVC and back competing on a national level.

That's funny T....just do whatever the opposite PJS thinks?....PJS will not be picking the next coach...by the way I heard they wanted Reynolds as AD.......

Hiring JH would be a mistake IMO at this time.....there would plenty of better candidates than JH

I agree, Tornado. Forget all the PJS stuff. If Howard is valuable enough to be hired as an assistant to Bill Self in Kansas, I would think that he has value to BU. This would much better than hiring another coach from a conference that is not the same level as the MVC (i.e. the MAC).

Regardless who the next coach is, I am just pleased, reassured, and satisfied because of who will be making the pick, and who won't be making the pick. :D

question (;)):
Almost certainly before a head coach can be fired, hired, replaced or whatever - there has to be Board approval, right?
Even the President in 2010 & 2011 had to seek & receive Board approval ..

so what if it were the intent of the Board to keep the head coach one more year given the buyout situation?
Would Chris Reynolds ask for or would the Board give him full approval right off the bat to make that decision himself?

I am actually hearing that this answer will be made known THIS WEEK - and it might surprise some...but not surprise everyone..
PM me if you want to know more...

Great point. Confident in the person that will making the choice now, as well!

I think they will give him full approval and they should. It should be his job anyway. The Prez has to let the AD do his job. He has to live with is pick. The previous Prez wanted to do everything her way and you see how well that worked out

In my opinion, if the AD is going to be held accountable, then the AD has to be able to make the decision (within reason, of course, and he sounds like a reasonable man).

So, if the AD has some good coaching candidates, great. If he wants to wait until next season, ok.

So, I am content to relax and to see what is coming.

he sounds like a reasonable man

If he wants to wait until next season, ok.

Those are incompatible statements.

Giving Geno another year to damage this program would be the absolute worst thing that could be done. If nothing else, use an interim coach, but Geno has to go. You can say that he can't damage the program any further, but I'd seriously rather not find out.

I would give a vote of no confidence if we still have Geno come next season. I don't care what he's owed.

Coach Ford has to go now. We have lost enough. Not one more month. He isn't capable of recruiting good D1 talent and the inmates are running the asylum. He is in favor of moving games back to campus, so he looks better with a house that is fuller. That's a step backward and a slap in the face to hundreds of people who put Bradley on the map!! I've been a fan for 40 years and with him in there, I could care less about Bradley. I'm not alone. Just ask 4000 others, who don't bother to come to Carver for a Bradley game!!!

You can't keep Geno for one more year and then let him go. It's fire him now or keep him for the length of his contract. There are TEN scholarships that are open for 2016-2017. Those need to be filled and that process should be happening now by the coach who will be coaching these players in 2016-2017 and beyond.

That is a great point and one that the new AD is well aware of. In order to replace all those seniors next year, a coach needs a good head start on the recruiting. As you point out, it could be a disaster to switch coaches next year when there are so few players returning, and not enough time to fill the openings with good quality recruits.
