Billy Gillispie fired tonight?

Good for him. I know someone will jump at the chance to coach at Kentucky....but man...who really wants to coach in that kind of environment?!?

I just dont see him taking that job. He obviously can recruit and win at Florida. I know they will throw a pile of $$ at him and that he is not the king in Florida even with 2 titles! But IMO he would be nuts to take that job.

On the Kentucky fans message board, there are about an equal number of threads saying Gillispie will be retained, as there are threads about him being fired. At this point nobody knows anything concrete.

Winners are always looking for new challenges. I wouldn't want that UK job but Donovan needs it to cement "legendary" status. I predict if the money and guarantees are right that he'll take it. The UK job is what stands between being just Billy Donovan versus being mentioned with Rupp, Dean, K, Wooden, Knight, etc.

Winning back to back championships now days is pretty good! One thing though is that Gainsville like it or not is a football school first and KY is basketball!

If Gillespie is fired, some think Billy D will be the next hire. How about Calipari? He got a shot at "the Job"?

Pat Forde article.............

"The speculation won't quit, which means Billy Gillispie will. Either of his own volition, or with a brusque shove from his bosses at the University of Kentucky.

Billy Gillispie and Kentucky haven't been a good fit from the start.
Barring a 180-degree change of tenor, Gillispie's short, ugly tenure as coach of the Wildcats seems as good as over. A decision will be made by Friday, sources say, and after weeks of simmering angst it does not figure to be a happy one.

If this is the end, it's a spectacular failure for Gillispie personally. And for Kentucky as a basketball program. "

Somehow, I don't think that Billy Donovan will take the Kentucky job.. Who knows with Calipari... I would have to think that it would be difficult to leave the recruiting class he is bringing into Memphis.

There's probably no job in college basketball that is tougher than Kentucky. It would take someone who's already established as a great coach and someone who can smooze the UK bluebloods and boosters. Billy Donovan certainly makes the most sense because of his UK pedigree and his credentials as a coach and recruiter. I think John Calipari has enough of an ego to believe that he can be the savior and bring back UK to national prominance. He certainly has showed he can recruit big time but not real sure he's a good big game coach. Don't be surprised if some of the UK highrollers make a pitch for Robert Montgomery Knight.

I also think Donovan will take the job now because his program at Florida is not what it used to be and football is king at Fl. where basketball is no.1 at Kentucky.

That would be the number 1 reason! RESPECT! Imagine the monuments built in KY if he would bring them back to back championships. One thing that could hold him back is that he also has a pretty good recruiting class coming in with one of the best point guards in the nation.
