Bradley Baseball

Changing the Culture

Changing the Culture

Bradley is having a disappointing baseball season. It shouldn't be a surprise. Coaching changes can be challenging as new philosophies are introduced. It involves more than what is coached on the field. Expectations in the classroom and in the general community are part of it too.

Administrative Support + Talent + Effort + Execution = A Winning Program

Can that happen at Bradley? Sure it can. I love the Creighton comparisons. Both schools are private (Creighton is more expensive). Both schools are considered upper midwest (Omaha is colder). Neither team is a regular at the CWS. The point is that they face similar recruiting challenges.

Creighton's administration is known for supporting its teams. Their coaches are thought of as tough minded, fundamentally focused, driven individuals. Their teams are famous more for their effort than their talent. The result is programs in most sports that regularly compete for conference championships. Bradley could do the same thing. Elivis Dominguez was part of building Creighton's tradition. I suspect that is the model for success he is following.

Florida has to be the top geographic area for baseball recruits followed by So. Cal. So if that is any indication of his talent I love it.

I have heard from several sources that the incoming recruiting class for Elvis Dominguez and the BU Baseball program is outstanding, and the best BU baseball recruiting class in years. It's hard to know much about all the baseball recruits, but some have had great high school careers.

Here was a story about a very good pitching prospect from the Miami area--

Bradley has also signed a number of All-State and highly rated recruits from Illinois.
And here is an article about a pitcher from Madison, Wisconsin, Chris Ritter, who pitched a no-hitter, and had 2 hits in leading his team to a win in a sectional game in Wisconsin Division 2.

The incoming baseball recruits look very good. They seem to complement the existing team. Elvis is adding a number of quality arms which is great. He is also bringing in a skilled defensive catcher, a few athletic infielders, and a number of speedy outfielders. Speed is a clear priority, and this group has plenty of it.

I believe the class sits at 15 right now, but that number is likely to change over the next 4-6 weeks. A couple notes of caution:

1. This is a exceptionally large recruiting class. You can't add 14-16 every year to a roster limited to 35 players unless players are cut (or leave on their own).

2. There are only a couple JUCO guys in the mix, so the incoming freshman class is huge. The jump from HS to D1 is significant. It can take a few years for players to adjust to the speed and competitive pressures of the D1 game. How many freshmen are truly ready?

3. There are a couple pitchers on the list (one in particular) that will be tempted by the MLB draft.

I wonder what the goals are...qualifying for the MVC tourney is a good place to start...top 2-3 finishes in the MVC might be next. Teams like Wichita State, Missouri State, Creighton, and Indiana State are prett salty. Winning the conference is a major challenge, but it must be the goal. Things can turn around quickly in college baseball.

Can a 17-18 year old HS kid come in and be a good baseball player when he goes to college - yes. But this kid probably won't be going to college. If he does it will probably be somewhere like ASU.

Check out the video in this article - on my system I have to double click on the video when it starts playing and then expand the next screen that comes up. It's worth watching if you've got 8 minutes. Keep watching to the HR Derby even if you think it's over keep watching.

BU recruit Chris Ritter followed his ho-hit effort with another fine game to help his team advance to the Wisconsin state tournament-

the draft

the draft

Looks like a number of Bradley's incoming baseball recruits were drafted. Most of them weren't taken until pretty late, so they will probably go to school.

Rob Scahill will be gone for sure. It was nice seeing him improve his draft position from the 48th round to the 8th round. His hard work paid off.

Here is an article from BradleyBraves.com about junior pitcher Rob Scahill, who was drafted yesterday in the 8th round (241st overall) by the Colorado Rockies. He is a "4th year junior"- a senior academically, but he still has 1 year of eligibility left. -

Bradley baseball coach Elvis Dominguez announces another recruit for next season. It's Bradley's 16th recruit, assuming those drafted by MLB decide to come to Bradley. This is a great recruiting class, let's hope it translates into success in the Valley.-
Latest recruit- Josh Camalick- Hinsdale Central- .554 batting average, 10 home runs and 45 runs batted in.

Here are all the recruits and some good information about each one from BradleyBraves.com-
