Bradley close to developing a mascot?

Is this deja vu or what? This is the first I heard such review and decision-making was still occurring. We went through this several months ago, but although it was part of the "Brave" vs. "Braves" vs. "what ever alternate name" discussion, I thought the formal and officially announced decision was there would be no action taken on this for the foreseeable future. What has changed?

And, for what it is worth: A gargoyle has nothing to do with BU other than what is on some buildings (which is common-place on many large limestone fa?§ade buildings in the world). No tradition is associated with the thing and it has nothing to do with Braves.

And we could go on ad infinitum with this argument, why does it get re-hashed? Whatever they come up with, I hope it makes sense and still ties to "Braves" and BU tradition somehow.

Pump the brakes buddy. No one from the U has said anything about changing the nickname...in fact, they've reiterated that "Braves" would be around for "the foreseeable future". SO...nothing has changed.

As for the gargoyle vs any other thing for a mascot argument...what would you pick? Birds, dogs, and cats are over done and tired. A rose...maybe a clock. Ooooh, nothing says intimidation or pride like a ticking clock. Maybe something Peoria related? We could have a giant yellow Caterpillar walk the sidelines...thoughts?

As far as I know, no one else has a gargoyle for a mascot. I like it and every student who has taken a class in Neumiller Lecture Hall has passed beneath Bradley's gargoyles. So, there is a connection...albeit a loose one. But its better than a bobcat, a lion, an eagle, a redhawk, a squirrel, a bulldog, a beagle, a clock, the thunder, lightning, a tornado, a tree, a forest, and (I'd be willing to wager) anything else you can come up with.

And, need I remind you that traditions have to start somewhere...why not here and why not now? Something that isn't a tradition for you can be made into a tradition for current and future students.

I was lucky enough to see the artist renderings of the possible gargoyle and was very impressed.

... they've reiterated that "Braves" would be around for "the foreseeable future". ...

but haven't they waffled and back tracked on this issue more than once before?

First we had mascots - Indians, then Bobcats.....then we were going to name a new mascot in 2006, then we even held a "vote", then they back tracked and said we'd have no mascot..then it came up again in 2010..then delayed again and brought up later in 2012, then dropped yet again!!!...now it's being brought up YET AGAIN!

Then there was a move to eliminate "Braves", then we decided to fight to keep it, then we later had another move to change it again...
..and again......and again...now they're holding focus groups to see what the feeling is out there before embarrassing themselves again.

If the teams are known as the Braves and a Brave can't be used as a mascot, why even have a mascot? Why should a team known as the Braves be represented by an animal? When I go to the games I don't worry about a mascot being there.

If they actually have picked a mascot that has ties to the school and is unique in the marketplace - not another bird or cat - they can really capitalize on merchandise.

Gargoyle hats, keychains, shirts, foam wings for the little ones...not to mention that they'll have an official brand ambassador for the athletic department.

So, if they University and our Athletic Dept can cash in (to potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars) and some new traditions can be introduced and cemented...the question is twofold 1.) Why not? and 2.) why are ya'll so grumpy?

Not grumpy, just stating my opinion. Can't see a University who's team is called the Braves making a bundle on a Gargoyle.

UNC Tarheels? Auburn Tigers? Miami Hurricanes? Tennessee Volunteers? Iowa State Cyclones? UNLV Runnin' Rebels? Georgetown Hoyas? Oklahoma Sooners? I'm sure there are others, but those are the big ones I'm aware. I think at least a few of those would be considered successful.

They are their nicknames. I like Bradley Braves better than Bradley Gargoyles. Sure Bradley has been successful selling Braves garb. I know I see a lot of it at the games.

I don't think changing the name of Braves is up for Discussion, just adding a mascot. Tarheels aren't Rams, Tigers aren't Eagles, Hurricanes aren't Ducks, Cyclones aren't Cardinals, Hoyas aren't Bulldogs etc.

Hey - here's somewhat of an independent question...what does a wolf have to do with Loyola?

New MVC member Loyola are and have been since 1926, THE RAMBLERS........

Their one time mascot named "Bo Rambler" was sort-of a hobo/homeless-looking man but as time went on that seemed politically incorrect so was dropped.

and yet since the early 1990's, their logo is this...a wolf

In 2012 they upgraded their wolf mascot from a cartoonish character to a more menacing WOLF

Here's the answer - the school itself gets it's name from St. Ignatius of Loyola - and the coat of arms associated with St. Ignatius has a pair of wolves.

So is anything associated with Lydia Moss Bradley or Springdale Cemetary where she's laid to rest?? --
.....ferns?, a rose?, angel?, pteradactyl?..

Guess my point, which I guess is misunderstood, is why do we need a mascot? But if we have one I hope it works and the school makes millions.

Fur trapper as a BU mascot... Harkening to Peoria's earliest days.... They had to be pretty "Brave" back then.. Also they were Indian friendly!

Louis Jolliet - Explorer

Can't wait for the mascot to fire off his musket during games - at officials, opposing team coaches, opposing team players,
before crucial 1 and 1 FT's at the end of games....

Pelts can be banners of MVC teams BU skins!

AZ, you just got my vote. how great an idea

I'm a current student at bradley and am not a fan of the proposed gargoyle mascot. Personally I think it would look tacky and wouldn't be accepted well by the majority of fans. With the new logo being a shield, I'm wondering why no one has brought up either a knight or a Mr. Brave type mascot with a Captain America type feel. Both mascots would symbolize honor and loyalty to Bradley and the new shield logo, while also being a lot more relevant then a cartoonish gargoyle.

Political correctness...a knight or superhero would too male (sexist), too militaristic (violent), and too white (racist)..... :)

Still say Cavalry. Can see it now. At the first game bring the Indian from Oklahoma, thought I'd never forget his name, back and have a mascot dressed as a Cavalryman chase him out of Carver.

Here's a related article on team nicknames & mascots...highlighting how terribly thin skinned some people are...

There's a battle going on in Wisconsin to try to force various high schools and state schools into changing their team names..

An outfit that calls themselves...
"Indian Mascot and Logo Taskforce for the Wisconsin Indian Education Association"

is on the warpath and wants to force every school with a native American name into changing it.. one of their "chief" spokespeople, a woman named Barbara Munson has some interesting things to say...

...some of the things she says are downright preposterous and even offensive in themselves...

"Would you call your team the African Americans?"
(but we do call teams Irish, Dutchmen, Scots, etc...and those people don't seem offended by it!)

"It would be sort of like asking a sexual assault victim to out into the community and
request 10 percent of the population to support their complaint," Munson said."

(so she thinks having a high school team clear across the state with a native American nickname is the equivalent of and as serious as getting raped??)

"Indian nicknames victimize Native American children." (personally I'd fight the poverty, lack of decent education, and physical abuse issues first, but to each his own)

"Indian mascot stereotypes are European American ideas about what American Indian people are like.
They are very simplified, they are very stereotypical"

(Really?? Then why do schools that are attended by ONLY native American schools have those same nicknames - even "Redskins"?)
