Bradley lands a commitment- Trevon Payton

yoda

Well-known member
Trevon Payton
Talented 6-5 guard (he says he's 6-6), transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, originally from Georgia.
Spent previous year at DII, so should have two seasons left.
hit 47.1% of his 3-point attempts, hit 52% overall, 94 assists with only 54 turnovers, avg 10ppg, 3 rpg, 3 asst

Give Trevon a follow on his social media - he'll give you a follow right back- https://x.com/Payton11Trevon

Bradley needed to fill 9 scholarships- four players graduated (AJ, Alex, Corey Meta) & 5 transferred (Jaquan, Wheeler, Yu, Handy, Burch)

now four are filled- Kowalczyk, Thornbrue, Williams, Payton.... Five more to go.....who's up next?
I like that Coach Wardle found someone he liked and wants (and who WANTS to play at Bradley) quite early in the spring cycle.

If you look back to the beginning of the portal era, the best transfers Bradley has landed all seem to be the earliest ones each spring.
The earliest spring commit in 2019 was Rienk Mast (not a transfer)
The earliest in 2020 was Sean East
The earliest in 2021 was Mikey Howell, followed right away by Terry Roberts then Malevy Leons
The earliest in 2022 was Pop Weathers (bust), but then Christian Davis then Duke Deen
The earliest in 2023 was Burch then Atlason (not transfers)
The earliest in 2024 was Connor Dillon, then Zek then Corey Thomas
The earliest in 2025 was AJ Smith then followed right away by Alex Huibregtse.

so we see a pretty solid pattern - that once the first few weeks of April pass, the transfer pool gets a little weaker...
the late spring guys who committed late April thru May & June - Kai Yu, Handy, Mayar Wol, Pettigrew, Emarion Ellis, Kyle Thomas, Biliew, Ekono, Nolan, McAdoo, Kingsby.... are all, as some here have termed - leftovers...... that turned out to be scholarships that didn't pay off.

one more note- Arkansas-Pine Bluff played the 24th TOUGHEST non-conference strength of schedule in DI (SOS)- so Trevon's stats
definitely came against solid DI defenses.........

Here is the information we posted back on April 1st when Bradley started recruiting Trevon Payton-
One new name-
D1 portal- Trevon Payton- 6'5" redshirt-junior guard at D1 Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He was at D2 Limestone University for 2 years, one of which was a redshirt year, and he played this season at UAPB. He started all 32 games this season and averaged 10.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.9 apg, and shot 51.9% overall and 47.1% from three.

He shot 52% overall, which is tremendous for a guard, and over 47% from three, on a rather large volume of shots. So his shooting was elite. Plus he averaged significant rebounds and assist numbers.
At a decent D2 school in 2024-25, he averaged 13 ppg and shot 39% from three as a freshman.
Welcome to Bradley! A great start to the spring recruiting!
Let's hope Carver Arena can become Payton Place. (a bad pun for those over 60)

Nice. Getting a good shooter is big, with Alex and Bully gone. You don’t want defenses packing it in because they don’t respect us on the perimeter.

yes, been true for years, dominant big men in mid-majors are extremely rare...so if you look at the stats- almost every team
that finishes Top-3 or 4 in the MVC are the teams with the best 3-point shooters.
It was certainly true this year - note the top five 3-point shooting teams are almost exactly how they finished in the standings

And admirable that Trevon knew right away where he wanted to play - doesn't appear that he visited anywhere else.
Lots of portal guys seem to be holding out only for a Power-5 offer, knowing even the guy on the end of the bench
still gets $100K even tho he only plays in garbage time. Good luck with that but it explains why 50% of the portal guys
don't find anywhere to play next year - they are aiming way too high and have overinflated sense of their own value.

also- link to Trevon's hometown newspaper covering his commitment to Bradley - LINK

How did a kid like this end up starting at a D2? Late bloomer?
Some players develop at a later age, others that are average players don’t get recruited heavily for academic reasons and others just get overlooked. It’s good we got a commitment. Statistics can be deceiving just as highlight reels can be. He played at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and they are in the Southwest Athletic Conference, which is one of the weakest conferences in Division I. Teams in that league play little defense and most teams play mostly one on one basketball. Let’s hope he turns out to be a quality find.

I am sure the coaches saw game film of him and liked what they saw and what they can improve on

It happens somehow. Like how did Bennett Stirtz land at a D2 school? Stirtz ended up as the POY in the MVC, and a 1st team All-Big Ten this year, and an honorable Mention AP All-American.
Trevon Payton played basketball for Shiloh High School in Snellville, Georgia, a school with an enrollment of 2,100 and a pretty good basketball tradition. From what I can find, he had a good high school career there, but in some articles, he was listed as a 6'5" forward. So maybe he fell through the cracks because college coaches weren't sure he could make a transition to a wing guard position.

Also ask Jack Sikma how his career blossomed

Thank you. I was going to post this here. My favorite part was when he told me that Valparaiso was recruiting him, and when he told Wardle that, he made sure to secure him. It was pretty funny. Overall, a great interview, and you get a lot of insight into his journey up to now and who he is as a person.

yeah
after Trevon's 2nd year at Limestone, they discontinued their sports programs including basketball...
their web site was scrubbed and doesn't have anything to document the games, box scores or stats form 2024-25...
so pretty much all we have is the UAPB stats...
