here's a real oddity regarding New Mexico....

they just released their schedule and on December 30
they play a ROAD GAME at an NAIA opponent!!!

I have never before seen an NCAA Division I school go on the road and play at a lowly NAIA opponent!
They play Sunday December 30, 2018 at University of the Southwest in Hobbs, NM, some 340 miles southeast of their campus in Albuquerque!

University of the Southwest basketball was 1-28 last year in NAIA
Their home arena (Maddox Student Center) seats only 1200 but it has also been mentioned that the game may be played at Hobbs High School - which surprisingly has a gym capacity of over 3,000!! It is a legendary high school that has produced multiple NBA players and a Naismith Hall of Fame Coach.
 
Bradley's opponent in the MWC-MVC Challenge, New Mexico, just received some bad news. They lost 3 of their top 4 scorers from last season, and one of their players that they were expecting to be a key addition this season and make up for some of their lost scoring, was Ohio State transfer JaQuan Lyle. He is a former 5-star high school recruit who is now a 6'5" redshirt junior guard who averaged 11.4 ppg as a sophomore at Ohio State, and shot 41% from three. He sat out last season after transferring to New Mexico, and was expected to be an immediate starter for the Lobos this season.

...But he suffered a ruptured achilles tendon in practice Saturday and will miss the entire 2018-19 season.

JaQuan Lyle has moved around a bit. He attended high school at Evansville Bosse HS, and initially committed to play at Louisville during his junior year. But then he decided to move to Huntington Prep in West Virginia for his senior season. Then he dropped Louisville and signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Oregon, but never honored it either. So then he decided to do another post-grad year at a different prep school, IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Then he committed to Ohio State and spent his freshman and sophomore years there.

That's too bad. Tough for the kid and I want all Braves opponents to be as strong as possible to help our SOS.
 
That kid seems to have several personal issues, and hopefully this extended period of time away from basketball will help him get his personal life straight.
 
The Smoker is two weeks away
but since we first mentioned this year's Smoker, seemingly just about the entire staff of the PJStar Sports department has been canned.

Used to be the PJS sent at least 3 guys there - Liesse, Dave Reynolds, Wessler.....but Liesse is long gone and now Wessler, too - do they even have 3 guys left that care to go?
So will it just be Dave Reynolds there? Does anyone know if any other media people will be there?
Maybe they ought to invite the staff of BradleyFans...

well, the "Smoker" was last night and there was a time when we used to get a very thorough report on it in the local media...
but I guess those days are over....might as well hope for a report on Friday's closed scrimmage ;)

I'm curious why they held the scrimmage at a neutral site - the 20,000 seat Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis - home of the Pacers?
They certainly didn't need all those seats and they could have saved money holding it on one of their campuses or in a smaller gym.
 
Bradley plays IUPUI in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Today in a closed scrimmage, they annihilated Chicago State 86-50.
Vanderbilt transfer Cameron Justice had 24 points for IUPUI. Justice is a fine shooter, and a former Mr. Basketball in Kentucky (2015). He scored 3,588 points in his high school career, but averaged only 1.7 ppg as a sophomore at Vanderbilt. He was recruited to Vanderbilt by Kevin Stallings in 2015, but Stallings left before Justice got there, and he played his first 2 seasons as a deep sub at Vandy under Bryce Drew.
 
Now, what benefit did IUPUI get from playing Chicago State? Shouldn't scrimmage opponents be at roughly the same level? Calling CSU a cupcake is an insult to all cupcakes. ;-)
 
Don't forget this THURSDAY...
there's a full Bradley practice that's open to season ticket holders- you must call Nathan Bramwell at BU to assure you are on the list

then Next Thursday, is Bradley's first exhibition game vs. Carroll!
