Brawl at girls AAU basketball game

Da Coach

This brawl happened at an Indiana AAU tournament game involving young teen girls teams. One team's coach is upset with the officials' calls, and after arguing a while, she is called for a technical foul. The coach and the team decide they will quit and leave the tournament. As they are leaving the court, a spectator, probably a family member, gets into the ref's face with a phone camera and continues to berate the official. The official slaps the camera away, and it quickly accelerates to a brawl with the fan, the team's coaches and players pummeling the referee.

Any time you get adults involved it ruins it for the kids. There was a gentleman, Paul Rutherford, who ran the basketball program at First English Lutheran Church. He had a meeting at the beginning of the season and told the parents leave the kids, his referees and coaches alone. If they didn't like something that was going on come to him. If they caused a problem he would refund their money and they could leave

I agree and that has pretty much always been true. But in recent years, we have seen more of the young players verbally abuse officials, and even occasional instances of young kids physically attacking the officials. In the above video, there was one young girl (the girl with the white T-shirt and white headband) who quickly got involved physically and landed a number of blows to the official. Any player who physically assaults an official like that should be banned for life from competing in organized sports, IMO.

As a person who has made a lot of mistakes in my past, I think I have to disagree with this sentiment. I believe there should be some harsh penalties, but one strike and you're out forever seems a bit harsh, especially when you're talking about young kids who don't have fully developed brains.

At the very least the adult and player should be charged with assault. If that assault on the referee had been around here the adult would be banned for a specified period of time

This incident, and other recent fan/player 'riots', reinforce the fact its getting more dangerous in the jungle.
Time to wake up people. Time for personal responsibility.... ZERO TOLERENCE for anyone involved. Criminal charges and/or participation suspension. In my day, my father would have beat the cra# out of me for this kind of behavior.. Sadly, responsible fathers are in short supply for many of these animals today. Max punishment.. Perhaps the next time other wild animals will behave more civilized.

Unfortunately that video is sickening and IMO all involved should not be allowed in a gym again. That includes the man with the camera stripes and any person who threw punches. That is not how being civil works. They are just short of animals. Why are people not smart enough to see they are ruining the game as we knew it years ago.Never in my 40 years of being involved did I ever see anything like that.Thank goodness.
