BU Beats UW-Parkside 87-77

Now you're just having too much fun Beninator. I can't wait until you begin singing the praises so we can resurrect your old posts. ;)

Beninator........ Good guy....... Just a little late to the party. ;) :)

You always have a backhanded compliment don't you! ;-)

Don't worry Ben.....I'm a good guy too, just find myself on the wrong side of an opinion.....just ask B4L. :)

I didnt want to say "I told ya so" but...i'm going to ...

"I TOLD YA SO "

I have said before, that I have watched DS play from the time he was in grade school at Peoria Pleasant Valley. He has a sense for the court that is a God given talent and cannot be coached. His basketball IQ is very high. I think his game comes from that, not his physical ability, I was not surprised to see him do what he has been doing the last 10 years. Every year I have heard, "yeah he's good but not at the next level" and each time he has proven himself.

Let me precict now, that he will be one of the all time career assist leaders at Bradley before he leaves.

any ges who my favorite Brave is ?

Big DS fan here too...Sam's thinking alike? :)

Regardless of how this thread has plays out, it is obvious that this will be the place to be this season to discuss BU hoops. Should be fun!

Well just call me a negative Nellie, but what I saw tonight was nothing short of a cr@pfest! Going into this, I wasn't expecting miracles, but I was certainly expecting more than was shown tonight! I wanted to see this team at least display a purpose on the floor and show signs that they knew where they belonged on the floor! This team had no clue on the offensive and defensive side of the ball for very long stretches of the game. Defense was terrible.... Rebounding slightly better.

Someone...anyone explain to me why Walt should be our PG! I would love to hear the reasoning!!!

Walt should be our 2 guard, with DSE at the point for now. If we make that adjustment, Walt will have a big year for us!

If there was any doubt about whether or not to redshirt Nate Wells, the answer from tonight is a resounding YES to a redshirt. Nate and the program will be better off for redshirting.

Can someone explain to me why we put DSE back into the game after the injury scare late in the second half? If this were a regular season game, I could understand this. Even if DSE was cramping up, why risk injuring DSE by him making an awkward move in an EXHIBITION GAME! SMH!!!!!!

Nice game from TB and DS. I am not ready to anoint DS as the starting PG, but it was nice to see Stewart distribute the ball tonight and I like his outside shot.

Jake was his usual scrappy self. I would love to see him make some threes!

Geno, I have been incredibly neutral about your hiring. From what I have seen from your first game as a Bradley coach, I want a refund on my ticket!

You have gotta be kidding me! You're basing your critism of Geno on one EXHIBITION game? Please!

I thought most of the bashing last year was directed at Les exclusively. But apparently some posters here will bash ANY coach just because things might not be going smoothly.

Give it a rest already!

You're barking up the wrong tree if you're trying to group Ben in with the 'traditional' bashers... Most of those people are now jumping to the defense of Geno (even though most aren't even criticizing him).

Looks like the honeymoon is over for Geno (for some) after 2-3 weeks.

I guess Butler's pre season loss makes Brad Stevens the worst coach in America and fans should quickly walk away from him/the Butler program.

Could some fan impatience with GF be part of the, gasp, fallout?

I have observed sports and fans for numerous decades and have formed opinions on the subject - but no sooner will I express my opinions than someone will presume I am talking about them and they will lash out -- just watch & see...
even though I absolutely aim these neutral comments at NOBODY -- some will still see a shoe that fits and go ballistic - guaranteed.....

I think there are basically two types of fans....

Type 1 are fans who treat the team like they treat someone else's kids... as long as they are behaving as expected then good, but if not then there's little patience with them and they reserve the right to be be quite negative.

Type 2 are fans who treat the team like THEIR OWN KIDS...and they are 100% supportive even in difficult times, although it doesn't rule out that they might offer some reasonable criticism when appropriate but never attacks.

I think fan "impatience" is something that's independent of the performance of the team...it's tied to the type of fan you are....
Are you a fan for what YOU can give to the team? (Your support, MONEY, attendance??)
Or are you a fan for what the team can give to you? (wins, entertainment, pride, bragging rights?)

Some fans just want wins - wins are ALMOST all that will satisfy them -- but as we saw with Molinari - even wins aren't always enough if you employ a boring style of play --
so I think in the end - the "impatience" we are talking about is tied to the fan's assessment of the "entertainment value" of the team...

In other words if the fan feels "stroked" enough, he remains quiet or possibly is happy...
if he does not feel entertained sufficiently to his demands, then he begins to gripe...and can get quite negative - kinda like someone who feels cheated or isn't getting their money's worth.

Meanwhile other fans support their team and withhold nasty comments through thick and thin.

Well said I agree 100%

Decent post tornado.

However, based on your last paragraph aren't there three types of fans:
1) the one who needs "stroked"
2) the one who wants entertained
3) the one who will be blindly loyal all the time

Can a fan be a little of all of them? To me, the fans who feel the need to give money and be close to the program can fall into category 1 (needing stroked) and also 3. A fan can also give money to a program but really, mostly for the entertainment value of it.

I think a program needs all three kinds of fans to thrive.

I really see, maybe, one person who is saying anything negative about Geno, and even then that person isn't being unreasonable. Why is saying that we don't look good negative towards GF?

Tornado, I ask the same of you?

I'm going nuts here. Somehow, saying we don't look good, is bashing GF? Even though from Day 1 I've said I expect no high than a 6th place finish and that 7th-9th is far more reasonable. I do not have high expectations for this team, and feel that the exhibition did nothing to change that. I think many feel that way. The vast majority of those are not 'ripping,' 'bashing,' or being 'negative.' I think it's being reasonable. GF inherited a last place team who lost it's leading scorer and it's starting 4/5 is gone for the season. I asked it once, and no one answered - If expectations are a middle of the pack finish (7-5th), and we get 8-10th did Geno fail this season? If not, then why is my expectation of 7th-9th negative and unreasonable?

Also, the 'types of fans' post is a BS in my opinion. I am not high on BU at all this season and do not think we will be very good, but I haven't reduced my donations at all and I just bought season tickets for the first time. Where do I fit? I don't think the types fit, nor do I see any reason to categorize fans into such buckets. I've never understoof the desire of some to call people 'good' fans and others 'bad' fans...

I am blasting the staff as I believe that they did a poor job last night against a bad Division II team! I sincerely hope that things improve! Finally, I hope that Geno proves that he is deserving to be among the highest paid coaches in the MVC. So far, I like the recruits he has brought here. But to date, he does not deserve to be among the upper pay scale tier for MVC coaches.

So just curious - where do you think BU will end up this year Beni?
Seems like you're gunning for top half.
I remember Geno stating that we're looking to try different combinations for the exhibition games, but we want to end up winning. I think he accomplished that, and every game we'll see steady improvement hopefully so we can get ready for the Valley wars.

My perception is we're right on track, and if nothing else, last game brought out that DS belongs on this team and that we have another option if WL struggles at the point. And that TB is not too far behind to where he needs to be (at least on offense).

At least coach didn't have to say, "It was a wake-up call."

Hmmm... I'm trying to figure out just where I fit in. I commit a fair amount of money to the university in support of the men's basketball program. I'm a pretty loyal guy who expects to be entertained and appreciates the value that comes with my financial commitment. That being said, I believe that I'm quite reasonable in my expectations. When performance matches expectations, then it's a good year. When performance exceeds expectations, then it's a great year. When performance falls short of expectations then there's disappointment.

So which fan am I?

Umm, a normal one? :)

I agree with you. I'm pretty much like you. I spend some money and give some money. Like to be entertained. Like to win. Have certain expectations based on the situation of the program---its pretty simple really. One thing I am not is in the need to be stroked department. I could care less about that.

I believe Tornado said, "basically", which is a very general/loose categorization of fans. I agree with him that we often assess the student-atheletes as if they're someone else's kids, while some treat them as though they are like their own. And a fan's comments will be reflected that way.
If he wanted to get more specific, yeah, I'm sure T could split up fans into 10 different categories.
I think his main point was to give rationale for some fans reacting the way they do - am I right here?
Anyways, some of you are acting like you can't be a fan any longer just because you don't see yourself fitting exactly into the 2 types of fans.
I wouldn't take too much into it - I think the point was missed maybe.

Since you brought up last year's Quincy game, allow me to share my comments from the "Braves fall to Quincy 86-80" thread on this board from November 6! Look up my comments from that game. They can easily be found!

INEXCUSABLE!

No TEAM concepts on the floor at all! Is it asking too much to go down the court and pass the ball and get movement on our sets and NOT PLAY STREETBALL!

Jake Eastman's defense tonight was abysmal!

AT is what I was afraid he is and that is a fill in player at best!

Note to Walter Lemon-- you are a slasher---no three balls until you completely rework your shot! WL has the potential to be a very good player for us!

After the red/white scrimmage I stated that Jordan Prosser should be in the starting lineup and tonight is further proof that JP is a starter!

Note to BU---please do not ask these ref's back for future events. I am not blaming the ref's for tonight's loss, but that has to be one of the worst officiating crews that I have ever seen.

Good night!

So as you can clearly see, I have been very consistent with my comments about exhibition games regardless of the coaching staff! .8) For the record, I said numerous times on this board that I thought JL should return for one more year, but I could see the reasons for firing JL. I had no intentions of getting into a Geno vs JL pissing match, but you had to go there. I am blasting the staff as I believe that they did a poor job last night against a bad Division II team! I sincerely hope that things improve! Finally, I hope that Geno proves that he is deserving to be among the highest paid coaches in the MVC. So far, I like the recruits he has brought here. I thought our offense did a good job overall in moving and screening , we were not standing around waiting for that one screen, remember the team has only been practicing for 2 weeks so you have to give them a chance at improving down the road, the only thing that can keep us from being consistent is our point guard play as Walt needs time to understand the things he needs to do in playing that position, our offensive rebounding was much better and our team defense was better in the 2nd half, I liked what I saw from the staff and expect to see better things ahead , next exb. game will be against a better team and give us an idea on what improvements we make as a team.
