BU Beats UW-Parkside 87-77

I believe Tornado said, "basically", which is a very general/loose categorization of fans. I agree with him that we often assess the student-atheletes as if they're someone else's kids, while some treat them as though they are like their own. And a fan's comments will be reflected that way.
If he wanted to get more specific, yeah, I'm sure T could split up fans into 10 different categories.
I think his main point was to give rationale for some fans reacting the way they do - am I right here?
Anyways, some of you are acting like you can't be a fan any longer just because you don't see yourself fitting exactly into the 2 types of fans.
I wouldn't take too much into it - I think the point was missed maybe.

I fully support my kid in all of his athletic and academic ventures, but what I don't do is over-inflate his true athletic ability or intelligence.

Its ok LittleBrave. My fandom isn't determined by someone else. It's determined by me.

I'm sure that you're familiar with the phrase, "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken $#!^."

So just curious - where do you think BU will end up this year Beni?
Seems like you're gunning for top half.
I remember Geno stating that we're looking to try different combinations for the exhibition games, but we want to end up winning. I think he accomplished that, and every game we'll see steady improvement hopefully so we can get ready for the Valley wars.

My perception is we're right on track, and if nothing else, last game brought out that DS belongs on this team and that we have another option if WL struggles at the point. And that TB is not too far behind to where he needs to be (at least on offense).

At least coach didn't have to say, "It was a wake-up call."

Just keeping it real here fellas...

Re: Where do I expect us to finish? Anywhere from sixth to tenth place in the MVC.

I have mentioned this in previous posts that I am not expecting miracles this year. As for last Tuesday, I wanted our coach to try new combinations and he did.. Most coaches do this in these games anyway. I expected to see mistakes on the floor. But, I did not expect to see the team look completely lost for long periods of time. Our guys had no clue as to what to do on the floor and I hang that on the staff! Remember, Geno stated that he had been working exclusively with the team for the past two weeks and didn't bother with scouting. --and I don't knock him for not scouting Parkside--

As for the fan conversation here, I think that teams from all levels of sport need to be inclusive. We should be looking to reach out to the big donors, alumni, local residents, and the students.

I thought our offense did a good job overall in moving and screening , we were not standing around waiting for that one screen, remember the team has only been practicing for 2 weeks so you have to give them a chance at improving down the road, the only thing that can keep us from being consistent is our point guard play as Walt needs time to understand the things he needs to do in playing that position, our offensive rebounding was much better and our team defense was better in the 2nd half, I liked what I saw from the staff and expect to see better things ahead , next exb. game will be against a better team and give us an idea on what improvements we make as a team.

We disagree on some things, but I can not see a reason to put Walt as our point guard this year. Walt's contributions to the team are far greater at the 2 guard.

Great post LB-GF stated he wanted to try different combinations to see what works. Someone asked me yesterday what I thought and told him that they tried several different offensive schemes including using JP up top along w/ several different combos of players.
To say they didn't look good would be very difficult for me to say in light of that.
I might be inclined to agree if he used a 7-8 man rotation and played only his basic offense (which I am not sure he has only 1 basic) and we struggled but he didn't.
In fact someone might be able to help me but how many different combinations of players did he use-I think it was close to 7 but honestly can't remember all of them

Decent post tornado.

However, based on your last paragraph aren't there three types of fans:
1) the one who needs "stroked"
2) the one who wants entertained
3) the one who will be blindly loyal all the time

Can a fan be a little of all of them? To me, the fans who feel the need to give money and be close to the program can fall into category 1 (needing stroked) and also 3. A fan can also give money to a program but really, mostly for the entertainment value of it.

I think a program needs all three kinds of fans to thrive.

I can see the mis-reading of my post has begun....
...so to answer....no -- I think the guys who want to receive proper entertainment or get stroked are one and the same....varying to degree..

..and a fan can be Type 1 or Type 2 and may switch back & forth freely from time to time but the would be mutually exclusive in regards to any individual team...
For example -- I am Type 2 concerning BU but I am Type 1 concerning the Chicago Bears...thus the Bears had better be playing well or I doubt I am gonna follow -- just don't have the time to waste there unless it "strokes" my fancy..
BUT I am there thick or thin and have proven it when it comes to the Braves...

Teams want both types of fans and there's nothing wrong with either type - but they differ and nobody will convince me that they are one and the same.

I really see, maybe, one person who is saying anything negative about Geno, and even then that person isn't being unreasonable. ?

Tornado, I ask the same of you?......
ask what?? I am only marginally involved in any talk of what Beninator is saying - so is it possible you might be attributing something to me that I have not said??
I have defined nobody as bad...and yet I have already seen several posts that are a bit critical of Geno, the team, style of play, and a few other factors...
BUT nothing yet is so far out of bounds - as I have always done - I allow people to form their own opinions and I hope others allow me the same privilege.

FWI T, I haven't seen anything that you have posted as being derogatory or attributed to me in any way in this thread. We probably have different opinions from last Tuesday and I am fine with that as should everyone on the board.

and Ben -- I didn't see the game as you did but I know you and know of your devotion to Bradley basketball and I fully view your words as a desire to be better ..and not really as a slam or attack...

I agree with you here Beninator, but I applaud Geno for giving Walt a try at PG during the preseason. We don't want what happened last year (short handed at PG) to happen again. We saw what kind of season that led to.

Question: :?: Where would Geno have to finish to justify his salary to you? :?: Better than sixth? Or, is it black and white to you? Does he need to win the regular season and/or conference tournament first before he can justify that kind of jack? What if we finish in the top 3? We haven't done that in a decade plus. :?

precisely -- now's the time to do it and watch him against outside competition -- same with using Nate and the other freshmen & mixing up rotations and combinations....and see how they do.
This is what the exhibitions are for.

Good question and I will answer it this way. I don't blame Geno for his pay scale. I blame Bradley for that. So I think he is overpaid until he delivers for us. That being said here is what I would look for. I don't think I am being unreasonable here.

I give Geno a pass this year and all he has to do is prove to me that he can coach. (Jury is out with me on this for now.) I expect to see improvement next year with some of his recruits getting in the mix with some experience. I would like to see his system fully in place and a top half finish in the MVC. I would shoot for lets say fourth place here. Year three I expect big things given the contract he has signed. (MVC regular season or Conference tournament champion/NCAA appearance)

Seem fair???

Geno also sees the team every day in practice and Walt every day in practice. I don't think he just randomly chose Walt to play if it wasnt based on something he's seen.

I don't worry about who plays what position. I want the best five players on the court for the majority of the minutes. IMO, Walt is one of the best five. DSE played the "point" much of last year and was fine. To me worrying about defining positions is counterproductive.

It's going to take more than one game to convince me of much of anything, good, bad or indifferent.

Ben -- here's a tough hypothetical....

Let's say TB has a monster year -- averaging 20 ppg and gets looks from the NBA..(just play along...)
Then also say DSE has a really good year (avoiding injury such as the foot injury that hampered DSE much of the first half of last year), and also gets on 1st or 2nd team All Conference...
..and a few other BU players have decent years...

Just how high in the standings would BU have to finish in this scenario for you to say Geno did a good job?
Wouldn't a 6-7th place finish with that kind of personnel reflect a bad job of coaching?
Conversely, if BU is in the top-3 would Geno get the credit or would someone finally blurt out the chilling phrase...
"gee JL actually had some pretty fine players there, too bad we never had the chance to see him coach them all when they were healthy."

I allow people to form their own opinions and I hope others allow me the same privilege.

Agreed 100%. I also don't get into labeling fans, trying to figure out where allegiances lie, or what TYPE of fan someone is.

If they say they are a fan, I believe it. I'm not in that person's head nor am I probably not in that person's inner circle of fans. I don't try to play amatuer psychiatrist with people's motives, etc.

All of us here are Bradley fans. To me that's pretty much all that matters.

Why do we have to have fan categories anyway. If you're a Bradley fan, you're a Bradley fan. Never went to a game and saw a Bradley fan cheering for the opponent. Stir, stir.

agree-- and I also labelled nobody at any time in this thread..but I do have eyes, ears, and a brain and don't believe everyone is the exact same degree of a fan just because they claim to be
