BU postgame thread--BU 76 ISU 75

I had a great time at the game, all the more so because we won. Great to see Ruff back, I didn't see it coming. Even when I saw him warming up, I thought he might see a few minutes, but not 24 or whatever he played.

The ISU fans were game, and that was fun. A couple of their students were running around with a flag, which was sorta cool, though they kinda ran over a guy who was trying to get to his seat. Anyway, now we just need to get them at Redbird Arena. :)

They have a good team. Amazing what a difference Jankovich has made there. Always thought this group was talented, but now they're playing well consistently too.

One thing that bothered me... The ISU related trivia. Thanks but not thanks. And then they were showing ISU highlights on the scoreboard. Again, I appreciate that ISU is good, but that board needs to be for BU highlights only (and I'd expect the same at their place-- ISU only). I hope Slack is okay, looked bad... was afraid he broke his collarbone, but sounds like it may not be that bad.

I really think they are starting to turn the corner.

I could see them winning 10 games (EDIT: in conference) if they continue to gel and get Ruffin back into the offense.

Whew what a game. I think I can relate with Crouch being bushed. I barely had the energy to stand up the last few minutes after a long day back at school and a very tense exhausting game for a fan. I don't know how a player can maintain the composure and strength to keep going in a tight game like that at the end. I think the refs got irritated with our fans and both coaches complaining to them in the first half so they just started calling quick technicals. I will say the dunk technical and Salleys technical should of been called. ISU was hanging on the rim every dunk and Salley plain slammed down that one ISU player and then stood over him for a couple seconds. Les clearly thought it was a good call as Salley warmed the bench for the remainder of the game after Les gave him a few choice words. Also, after watching the WEEK highlights of the game tonight, Salley gave one of the ISU players a pretty good bump as he turned to run up the court, so it may have been an ongoing trash talk war between the 2. All I know is, I plan on getting my ISU tickets very soon, that is going to be 1 heck of a game. I expect more technicals as well.

Do you really think Ruff helped that much?

It seems like a lot of the posters on this board didn't think he was the key:(

I thought BU's losing this year was just because they stink and have an awful coach

I really didn't think Ruff would make a difference........NOT!

Wow...you have issues. Not a single one of your "points" above is even remotely close to what has actually been said on the board over the last couple weeks...but go ahead and overdramatize everything if the mood strikes you, I suppose.

Anyway...awesome effort by the Braves tonight. Great crowd and a great atmosphere for a college basketball game. We HAVE to find a way to win at Wichita State on Saturday to make this win mean something...Hopefully Ruff is back for good now...He will give us a huge boost on both ends of the floor once he gets that step of quickness back...

It is still maddening to watch this team give up offensive rebounds and easy scores over and over and over again...If the coaching staff would just make rebounding a priority, this team could actually get on a roll...But until that happens, I fear that we are simply going to have to hope that this team can shoot 50% from 3 in order to win games...and that is something that you can't count on game after game...especially on the road...

Oh well...our defensive and rebounding deficiencies are really making this team have to work so much harder than it should to win some of these games, but a win tonight is a win...and it was fun to be a part of. Saturday on the road against a bad, bad team is absolutely huge for us now...win that one and a .500 finish in the Valley is well within our reach...and we have to get there first before we start to aim higher....

BEAT THE SHOCKERS!

Les clearly thought it was a good call as Salley warmed the bench for the remainder of the game after Les gave him a few choice words.

Sally had to stay on the bench. He had just fouled out of the game.

Here's a link to Benson's blog on the game. He talks about the refs and T's:

http://www.pantagraph.com/blogs/main/?p=2446#more-2446

ISU coach Tim Jankovich got his first technical of the season for "waving his hand" at official John Higgins. Jankovich was right in front of me and didn't say a word. But he wasn't alone. There were five technicals, all in the second half, with Higgins calling three of them. Higgins is a very good official, but he was a little too over the top Wednesday. Dinma Odiakosa deserved a technical for hanging on the room and Bradley's Matt Salley was rightly whistled for taunting Richardson after knocking him to the ground, but the other technicals to Bradley coach Jim Les and Richardson were really questionable. The officials were trying to take control of a heated game with a hostile crowd, but they need to remember everyone came to watch the players. The technicals ruined what was otherwise a memorable game.

I am not saying the refs cost ISU the game. They were a factor for both teams.

Didn't someone on this board make a mention, a few weeks ago, for Wilson to shoot more 3's? Now it seems like everything he throws up is money. He's turning into a big time player for next season, just needs to lower them TO's. Warren is getting more consistent, we know what SM can do, just need to find another big time impact player for next season like Wilson this year and I think were all set for another fine season. Plus will have Thompson able to show his stuff off for the first time along with Egolf and hopefully DC playing better.

Let's worry about next year ... next year and enjoy this great win.

Congrats on the win Braves.

You guys earned this win. You made more plays than we did. To quote an earlier post, this was a bizarrely officiated game. I've never seen this many T's. But no matter, not making excuses, you guys did what was needed to win the game, and we did not.

Had a good time at Sully's before the game, and a good time at Carver (minus the result of course.) You guys make a good atmosphere @ the arena as always and even though we havent won in Peoria in 6 million years, we always have a good time there.

This was one of those games where if you arent a fan of either team you were amazingly entertained. It was an awesome college basketball game and one that really could/should heat the rivalry back up. Good game tonight and we'll see you guys at our place on Feb 9th.

What a game, I'm so pumped we got the win, hopefully the guys can carry the momentum onto Wichita on Saturday. Great crowd and atmosphere, what a win!

If you say so then I guess I do (must not have read my second post). If I hurt your little feelings then please accept my apology................

It is so much fun w/ that large and loud of a crowd and you guys had a lot of fans their as well which really brought back the good old days of a great rivalry. ISU is a very talented, quick (maybe the quickest team in the MVC-even quicker then DU) team and are very exciting to watch so I hope you guys have a great season and I really hope that you win all the rest of your games except on 2/9 and when we play you for the MVC championship game in St Louis (nothing wrong w/ dreaming and maybe I am not dreaming if we can continue to play the way we are)
Another post asked if the Valley is really that tight this year and all you have to do is look @ some of the results to see that it really is. Other then DU (the way they are winning this year is amazing-the last 3 games they have won were because someone missed a key FT towards the end which gave them the oppurtunity to win) & EU averyone is getting beat by someone that we wouldn't guess would win the game. Even UE may surprise some teams before the end of the year or in the MVC as they are not that bad just not that good at least yet

Many plays in the game were sufficient to account for a one point swing...
take away any of the technicals, that's at least a one point swing,
if Dinma lets go of the rim a split second earlier, that's a one point swing,
if any of thos numerous fouls goes un-called, or if just one of those missed FT's goes in.....etc.

Both teams played very, very hard, and I think the Redbirds are a very good team, very athletic, and confident.
Kudos to the ISU fans for standing way up in the rafters and starting their ISU chant...I am surprised they didn't do it MORE, they had nothing to lose!
But unlike the Drake game, the minor little factors at the end like the foul and the last second shot went our way.
I don't think it proves BU is a better team than ISU, but what I think it shows is that BU is a way better team than they were 2-3 weeks ago.
We still need better post play.

Bradley wins!!! 76-75

Welcome back, Ruffin!

We started two bigs, right? Rashad Austin seemed to contribute in the little time he was in there. Any idea why we didn't see much of him later?

Also, did folks catch how Salley got that technical at the end to foul out? Did he say something to the refs?

- I think they called a technical for that just because of the seriousness of the foul. I think it should have been just a flagrent but i do agree that it was harsh foul

Why would my feelings be hurt by the fact that you can't make your point without being completely overdramatic and totally misstating everything that has been discussed on this board over the past few weeks...?
So, no apology needed...but thanks for the offer...

MS spat off something... the taunting words got him the T.

The foul was gonna be a 2 shot foul regardless.

A flagrant woulda gave them 2 ft's and the ball.

The T gave them 4 FT's, the ball, and MS fouled out.

so if MS keeps his mouth shut, BU wins by at least 3 maybe more since they got possession again?

ISU didn't get the possession again. That is the old rule.

ISU shot the 2 technical free throws and then Richardson went to the line to shoot his foul shots for being fouled by Salley. There was no ISU possession after that.

One of the crazier games I have seen at Carver in a long time. I can't remember that many T's in a game here ever. I also can't remember 3 straight home games decided by 1 point in the final 10 seconds. It's really been a crazy homestand. I'm not sure what else to say.

I said we were gonna win 4 straight, I was 10 seconds away from being right (and 18 seconds away from being WAY OFF). As I have said all along, if BU could tread water until Ruffin returns, the season was more than salvageable. I wouldn't say we were able to tread water, but we have been administered CPR and now have a pulse again. Now it's just a matter of keeping that pulse beating, and pumping some more life into this once-dead season. The first 10 games were 7-3, the second were 3-7. What will the final 10 (plus BracketBuster) yield?
