A new article on Rivals links a new name to Bradley recruiting.
Chris Colvin is a 6'2" 145 pound sophmore (class of 2009) guard from Chicago Whitney Young High School. He is a good playmaker and shooter and is still growing.

The article names Bradley as one of the 6 teams showing the most interest. The other 5 are all Big Ten schools- Northwestern, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, and Purdue.

Morning all. I can say that Colvin will be a player that could really be a huge get. I am pretty well versed in the 2009 class (note how many of the 2009 stories are written by me) and Colvin is likely the most complete player right now. I know that statement may raise some eyebrows, as the assumption is that Peoria's own D.J. Richardson is. I know D.J. pretty well and potential wise... he is the top. However, D.J. does not excel at anything, while Colvin is smooth. Very good athleticism, versatile, great court vision, heady player. His shot needs a bit of work, but he is on the verge of breaking out. I sincerely expect him to be a player talked about a great deal this summer.
 
Personally, I find better rankings at IllinoisHSBasketball. Yes... the site is done by a 15 year old and people look down upon that. But every event I go to, Daniel Poneman is there and in talking with him and seeing him work.. he knows his basketball. Some other rankings go almost solely off hearsay, or one game performances.

So back to your question. I can not really say that the ranking of Cully is improper. Among the 2009 prospects, he may be the closest to tapping out his potential, while Richardson, Bertrand, Riggs and Haynes have yet to really realize how good they could be. However, Cully, much like Colvin, has few flaws in his game, and is pretty good all-around. He can be lights out with his shot, extremely good with protecting the ball, and does not really have much fear in his game. However, he is nothing special athletically, is still 6'0, and is a work in progress on defense.

I think he is what some would classify as a perfect fit for the "Valley." Well, I think that term, while said in almost an insulting way by some, is a complement. To me, that means they get the most from their talents, as evident by the success of teams in the MVC and the Horizon League as well.

That isn't insulting to me, and as a Valley team, I will admit we don't get the blue chippers, and we would be very happy to grab the guys that are just the next tier below the top BCS guys.
 
How good is Seth Evans from Seneca? he is a soph and started on their amazing team as a freshman last year.

I like his game a lot. I am going to see him tonight. How well is he regarded as a D-1 player??

He really frustrated Bawinkel in the Supers last year also.

What does everyone think of this kid?
 
Seth Evans is your classic "coach's kid". (son of Seneca coach Doug Evans)
I might compare him as a smaller Jeremy Crouch.
He's a great kid, really knows the game, and I saw him have a good game against Pinckneyville in the semifinals at Carver Arena of the IHSA last spring, and a fair game against IVC later that day.

Presently he is doing well because of his advanced understanding of the game, experience, and he definitely has some skills-especially defensive. Against Devan Bawinkel last year he shut Devan down and helped his team advance to the IHSA Finals.
But because of other characteristics (such as size, strength, athleticism) I personally can't see him getting offers from anywhere above the mid-major level.

From what I saw a year ago I completely agree with your assessment of him. Smart and a basketball IQ that belies his age. Most definitely he is a coach's son. Doug Evans is an excellent coach and has been for many years at Seneca.

Seth also had a very strong build for a kid his age. You can tell he knows where the weight room is. My only concerns with him are:

1) level of competition. The Interstate 8 is a poor conference

2) his speed and quickness

I am anxious to see him tonight against a poor Wilmington squad. This is a team he should really stand out against even as a soph. I'll let you know.

I got to alot of games and i have seen all of Illinois top sophomores anywhere from 5-50 times. I have seen D.J. and Cully only afew times, and i have seen covlin dozens of times.
Colvin is a very good player but is far from being "complete". He has poor form on his shot and sometimes makes poor decisions. Colvin might have the most NBA potential in the class and could be a high high major kid. I know Bradley has sent him alot of stuff, but he has his mind fixed on high majors. I know he is also smart and Northwestern is going at him hard. Cully isnt very fast and has tapped out his potential, at best he could possibly be as good a senior as Maniscalco is now.

HOW does a person know that a player has "tapped out his potential?" That seems like a bold statement. Is the kid no longer coachable....has his capacity to gain strength and endurance ceased along with his mental capacity?

WHY would a coach take a player that will never be any better than he is as a HS senior :? ...will he regress?

Am I missing something here?
 
sorry about that comment, i shouldve elaborated further...
Cully is a very very good high school player, and will get better as high school goes on, however i do not see him being an impact player in college. The reason for this is because he is short and not incredibly fast. He could get stronger and become a better PG, but you cant teach height and its hard to teach speed. He is a good shooter, but i doubt he will get many open looks like he does in high school playing in the big east.

Chris Colvin (Class of 2009) has risen to #40 nationally, and is being recruited by Bradley, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Marquette, Purdue.
In a new premium report and interview, Colvin reportedly has received a phone call from Illinois' Bruce Weber, who wants Colvin to come on a visit to Illinois' campus, and he would like to offer Chris a scholarship.

"Illinois........appears to be on the verge of offering him a scholarship.

"I just got off the phone with (Illinois) Coach (Bruce) Weber," Colvin's father Ike said. "He said he wants Chris to visit on the 25th (of August) and they would like to offer him a scholarship." It reports that Minnesota coach Tubby Smith is very interested in 2009 point guard prospect Colvin.
Here is a portion of what is reported--
Colvin is described as a skilled point guard with good poise. He has the ability to run the offense, distribute the basketball accordingly, as well as score for his team. Colvin has good handles and is a nice defensive player. The focus remains on the improvement of his jumpshot which some have described as becoming increasingly consistent.

As a four star prospect Colvin has received offers from Iowa, Illinois, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, and Bradley plus there is much more interest in Chris throughout the country.

"There is interest from some of the same schools as last year like Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Wyoming," listed Ike Colvin. "Georgia Tech is looking at him, USC, Bradley, Miami of Ohio, Miami (Fl), Wisconsin, and some others."

At this point in the recruiting process it seems Chris has some time ahead of him before he makes a college decision. "Chris is wide open," Ike explained. "We are just looking for a school that fits his style of play. We are looking for a Memphis, a Louisville, a UCLA, those type of get up and down schools."

In the most recent Rivals top 100 rankings for 2009 last put together in November, Colvin was listed as the 40th ranked recruit in the nation and 7th for point guards. This March the DePaul Rivals site released a statewide ranking for Illinois that had Colvin as the fifth best prospect in state, number one amongst listed point guards. Three of the guys ahead of Chris are backcourt players including Illinois commits Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson as well as uncommitted Darius Smith.

In other respected Illinois rankings Colvin was listed as the second best 2009 player in state by IllinoisHSbasketball back in January. Most recently Chris was ranked as the 7th best 2009 player in Illinois by ChicagoHoops who released their rankings two days ago.

Colvin played for a team loaded with backcourt talent. A.J. Rompza, a 5-foot-10 senior, signed with Central Florida. Colvin is joined in the junior class by Marcus Jordan, son of NBA legend Michael. The team has two talented sophomores in Anthony Johnson and Ahmad Starks.

Ike Colvin said that his son is getting increased interest from several major schools.
"Providence, Marquette is strongly on him and Minnesota are showing interest," Ike said. "Providence, Oklahoma and Florida State have recently offered."

Colvin said that his son does not have a favorite school yet.

"It is kind of early," Ike said.

Colvin said that his son has not decided on a major in college yet.

"He doesn't know what he wants to major in yet. He's got a qualifying score on his ACT and is a good student."
