BU season review

Agree with you Ben...SS deserves a ton of credit for walking on the floor after what that young man has gone through........

Good #'s for SS the last 10 games, he played good ball, his #'s came up and did a good job on the D end. Didn't get much help with the small lineups. Sam has good hands, passes good and on the D end, can can steal the ball for a big guy. Some think Sam has been around for ever but in reality he has played just 3 years. Sam will be a great leader next year both on and off the court. His game will pick up next year if we get him a big to play along side him at the 4. I look for him to improve on the offense end over the summer. Glad you are coming back Sam:!: Good Luck:biggrin:

David Collins:
points: 4.5 ppg this year - 3.8ppg last year
rebounds: 4.0 rpg this year - 2.4 rpg last year
blocks: 50 this year - 13 last year
shooting %: 45% shooting this year - 65.2% last year
turnovers: 57 turnovers this year - 27 turnovers last year
66.7% from the free throw line both years
3 assists in his career (all this year)
12 steals in his career (8 this year)

Those numbers for a man who has the physical skills both body and size wise are sickening. I honestly believe Collins was the most disappointing big man to have ever put on a Bradley Uniform, who actually had potential. He never improved from his Junior year to Senior year.

To be 7 feet tall mobile and athletic and put up such weak numbers in a year the Valley is down, well personally Collins deserves a D for his efforts this season. The D is for major disappointment.

Yes, David Collins somewhat disappointed because he didn't produce. But, the more I watched him the more I understood. A) he isn't as athletic and mobile as many claim. He just wasn't. And, B) most importantly, he didn't know how to play basketball. He had/has no basketball instincts. You cannot teach this. David doesn't have them and that's not his fault.

He played basketball because he was 7-0 tall. That's great. But he just didn't have any other God given gifts to succeed.

Post of the day! Quite possibly the best description, with compassion, I've seen for Collins. Good call lee.

Maniscalco"s grade is a little unfair in that he had to shoulder too much of the responsibility do to the loss of Warren, I would give him a B , Collins showed at times he was capable of being a much better player when he put forth the effort, unfortunately he just did not give the effort that I felt he could have most of the time and so his grade was correct.
Thompson is the same size as Benson (Oakland center) which tells me that he needs to be more aggressive as we could not stop Benson .

I'm confused as to why so many people think SM's grade is so unfair. He is a captain...he ACTS like a upperclassmen, he is supposed to lead like an upperclassman, then why shouldn't he be graded like an upperclassmen? For a captain of this team he was very average. Even for a sophomore he was only slightly above average. In my book average is a C.

Leadership and heart A, but his actual production compared to his position on this team (and I don't mean SG, PG, etc) he was very average.

I'm glad to see the discussion on this board. I thank everyone for the nice comments, and I hope to give you more fodder for posting soon.

To answer some of the posts:

1. I agree with the sentiment on SS that he's a tough kid. I think he'll be a strong piece of the team next season, possibly more as a leader than through his production.

2. Don't get me wrong... I like SM. I agree that he was asked to shoulder the burden of the injury to AW. I just think he is a man without a position, and that hurt his production. Maybe a B- would have been more fair. He's also going to be a huge part of the team next year.

3. Technically, Brown didn't redshirt at BU, but he was still a redshirt freshie.

Again, please visit my site on the way to this board. In no way do I want to take away from this board... two completely different forums. BradleyFans does a great job hosting excellent discussions. My site is just for information and editorial work.

Guys let's be fair to SS. He is what he is and to me he gave us much more then I expected from him. SS is the behind the scene leader who gives you everything he has for better or for worse. He did bail us out a few games and due to WE's injury and DC's lack of motivation he was put into situations and minutes that the I bet the staff nor any of us would have imagined. For getting up everyday with pain and playing his butt off I give him an A for effort.

DC just did not have the passion for the game PERIOD. There should be no excuses but one. He never came to BU as a savior and I also bet the staff saw him as a potential starter but never as the go to guy. I give him a C for effort because I still believe there was untapped talent.

SM gets an A for effort and grit!

We do not get the best basketball players but as long as they come to play hard and determined I'm usually very happy. I like to grade these guys on effort not so much on their basketball talent. Most of our players are playing undersized for their position and we were still quite respectable even with the injuries.

All these Ds coming from a bunch a YMCA hacks I bet! I like to see what they could do even at their local gym. If it was easy then we'd would have played at this level.

Ill disagree simply because I think of athletic as being able to get up and down the floor, running ability and athletic ability as far as jumping and physical presence. Also, I agree he does have very little basketball IQ but there were moments when he made up his mind and went to the rim or went up to shoot he could play.

But I do disagree with the athletic and or mobile. But my assesment is moving up and down the court and simply not being a complete slug.

Regardless he still gets a D.

Well. What constitutes serviceable: pass or average?..... was Collins serviceable?

I guess serviceable, but come on man your 7 ft tall and cant average more then 4 boards a game.. come on man thats weak.

But he was only serviceable in the context there wasnt anyone else, if Egolf stays healthy, we see Collins in huddles at time outs and in warm ups, his PT would have been in Thompson territory.

I don't know that I agree with this. Egolf is going to be a nice player, but he didn't get a chance in his freshman year to show that he's going to be the inside big man on this team.

I hope we see more of Thompson next year, both physically and on the floor.

Joe you did a great job on this article. I may have given SM a B also but when you think about a c is really the right grade. As for everyone on DC Lee hit on the head when he said lack of BB IQ. When it clicked for DC he was a 4 but that was usually about 5 minutes a game on the average. A D was kind.
Next year will be interesting as we should have as least 9 if not 10 players to share the minutes.

Thought the same thing that whole game. I even made the comment to people sitting around us that the Oakland center didn't look any bigger then AT. The difference is that Benson came to play and AT just shows up. No drive and no passion. Not sure where his BB IQ is at. Hopefully he will get it together and commit to doing the hard work that it takes to improve his game (like JC did over one summer). One never knows what will happen from one year to the next so let's hope.

I hope you are right, but it doesn't appear he has ever had to work. He's always been more talented than everyone else.

Benson at least played 13 minutes per game in his frosh year... AT didn't play hardly at all. He took a major leap and was a STUD in league play.

two years ago in the red/white game AT was very active with a bounce in his step.. took a pass over his head in transition right under the basket on a full out run and had control to lay it in.... there is no way he gets physically slower...but there was not even a glimpse of physically being able to replicate that this year. loss of confidence affects us all differently and I hope with AT it resulted in a major case of the flat feet he displayed this year. heres to hoping he can kick them next year.
