Chicago Eliminated from 2016 Olympics

I could not be happier about this news. According to CNN: ""Chicago 2016, the organization leading the effort to host the games, had projected a cost of $3.8 billion, including a "rainy day" fund of $450 million in case of unforeseen increases if the city won the bid."

3.8 BILLION?
From country currently mired in a recession

From a state that is currently operating at a deficit of 11.6 BILLION dollars

From a state who is letting convicted felons be released early to save money

From a state with a governor who threatened to slash funding for the developmentally disabled population of the state including closing the ISVI (Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, where my sister is currently enrolled)

I am sure the chicago political machine would have made it work, but you can bet it would have been on the backs of every taxpayers in the state for decades to come.

Great post. I'm with you 100%. It hits home to me and my brother too.

The Chiacgo political machine would also have found a way to make sure the Mayor, the President, and their relatives and all their cronies and political insiders would make huge profits from the Olympics.

Just a curiosity question, but I wonder who paid for all these Politicos, cronies and celebs to go to Copenhaugen, be lodged, wined, dined and entertained?

Correct me if I'm wrong SFP, but wasn't San Francisco a US Finalist city, but withdrew because the 49ers demanded a new stadium instead of a renovated old one and threatened to leave the city?

The USOC vote was in early 2007, so the withdrawal would have been several years ago.

I would be more curious as to how much was spent to wine and dine the Olympic officials in Copenhagen?!?!?!?!

I would not have too much problem with the $1 Million spent in airfare if Obama used it to also build goodwill for the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Conference. The US is always getting "hosed" when it comes to climate control issues.

The 49ers are still trying to get the city to pay for a new stadium and the liberal wing of the city is saying no way! Since the 49ers are not going to pay for it and neither will SF at this time or in 2007, SF had to withdraw it's nomination. The new proposed stadium was going to be the hallmark to their bid. There are enough tourist in this town and having the Olympics would have made it unbearable. I will not even get into the taxes that would have been needed to support the effort.

Copenhagen is a great city! B4L would go crazy with all the site seeing. I was with a good friend and I swear we had to just stop saying,"Did you see that." because we were saying it every other minute!

Ben - I took a hard pro-US stance more because I'm sick of all that US bashing going on in the world. Rio does deserve if anyone and I'm happy for them. After seeing that short take on "Blame it on Rio", I feel I need to go down there soon.

OK SFP. I love that new avatar BUT............ how about blowing it up some so we can see it

See my Public Profile and you will see the rest! I'm not sure if it would be appropriate for this site. I see no problem with it butt.......;-)

I think the Chicago crime and traffic had a lot to do with the IOC Committees choice. With Chicago having the same amount of crime as NYC and the traffic absolutely horrendous, even with public transit, I think it was an obvious call. I wouldn't want to even attempt to drive close to Chicago during the Olympics.

Chicago crime and poverty worse than Rio? I don't think so. I think it really came down to a desire to "stick it to" the good ol' USA. Once a vocal faction in the city of Chicago made it known that many Chicagoans were opposed to the Olympics it gave the Olympic Committee the convenient excuse they were looking for. And I'll tell you something -- Rio DOES NOT have the money to
build up that city for the Olympics. They better hope the worldwide investment community floods their country with money.

Yeah I forgot also about the Braves trip there. The internet was crap in most locations, they better hope they build a better infrastructure in the next 5 or 6 years.

Is that a Snake around her or is that a picture of the fairy tail girl who let her hair down to let her lover up, or something like that:?:mrgreen::mrgreen:

A huge big snake. I'd love to be that snake!:D She's Mary Louise Parker the star on a show called Weeds. She's in her 40s, I just put her up there in contrast to B4L's 20 somethings.

I have to disagree slightly. I think that an overwhelming factor was the fact that there has never been an Olympics in South America. Rio better get some money somewhere and fast with the World Cup and the Olympics heading their way. Now the IOC will have to go about fleecing more cities for money for the 2020 games to make up for what they will probably loose in Rio!

If you missed the story below, it provides a good status description of Rio and it's prognosis for the Olympics. Apparently, they are still feeling the bad after affects of having the Pan American games 2 yrs ago, which some estimates had the costs at $2 billion. But the thing was, Rio promised to have a bunch of upgrades and infrastructure built for the games and that didn't happen. So now, they have to have those upgrades and infrastructure built, along with a whole bunch of other buildings built. The Olympics bill for Rio is expected to cost $11+ billion by the time the games are over with. If they are barely able to cover the $2 billion Pan American Games, how they going to come up with the $11+ billion?

Will the foreign investor money flood Brazil like it did China? Will Brazil be the next hot investment play like China? And will it ultimately be the next investment bubble to burst? Time will tell........
