CHN Top 144 Countdown for 2009-2010

Outside of a couple years when Jason Daisy was leading the Panthers, the MVC took a big risk in bringing UNI into the league.

There were some years in the mid-'90's where they were awful. And one time we beat them 80-39 in the late '90's.

There was some strong sentiment against UNI being in the league. A lot of it from Bradley fans.

Yet they have a whole lot of NCAA appearances recently compared to us. And they routinely beat us.

well...I guess we might disagree on the wording here...

They did make the NCAA tournament in '04, '05, and '06 and lost their only game in the tourney...same as '09.

and in regular season games vs. UNI...prior to this past year,
'04 we went 1-1 against them
'05 - 1-1
'06 - 2-0
'07 - 0-2
'08 - 1-1

so over that 5 year stretch weren't we 5-5 against them??

So how does that equate to them routinely beating us?
Seems like we have certainly held our own against them...and if you look even further back, we used to beat them routinely...and one of their worst all time losses is against Bradley (117-71)

Well SGD did state "Yet they have a whole lot of NCAA appearances recently compared to us. And they routinely beat us."

NCAA appearances is 4-1 in favor of UNI since 04 and if you include last year (which would qualify as recently) it is 6-4 in the last 10 meetings between the two schools. While that might not be considered "routinely" the statement is accurate. Since he stated NCAA appearances, losing the the first round is irrelevant to his argument... not trying to speak for him, but that is how I interpreted it...

The drive by haters are out in force again folks. Better bring in the wife and children and teach them to duck when they hear smack! If there is so much animosity towards the program why do they even bother on this site. There are plenty of other site that would gladly take their venom.

seems like we can each find some spin here and "routinely" to me means year in and year out...
so...I stand by my statement....
UNI had a very good season in 2008-2009, and while we were close to beating them both times in the regular season....it still remains true that going back the previous FIVE seasons, we were .500 against them...they were NOT routinely beating us.

Now, whether they have been good for the Valley is another whole topic...
Unfortunately, for the sake of the Valley and the way the Valley is perceived throughout D-I ball...they have fallen a little bit short of being the MVP...
..they are a dreaded "directional school" and they just can't get "over the hump" and actually beat someone in the NCAA.
They have less D-I history and tradition than most if not all MVC schools, and they have the worst venue and locale (sorry but we are trying to be honest).

Note that when Jeff Sagarain's data is used (as we saw recently in the ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia)
UNI not only comes in DEAD last in the Valley, they are so far behind everyone else in the Valley that
obviously those NCAA appearances don't impress everyone and one might wonder what's the deal??

BU is 14-4 all time vs. UNI at Carver Arena, and 25-15 overall against UNI all time...
I just don't yet see anything there that says they own us or beat us routinely.

You need to take off the rose-colored glasses tornado and borrow squirrel's $h!t-covered glasses. It'll give you a much darker slant and view of the BU program :|

UNI beating Bradley in the 2001-02 season at Bradley REALLY ticked me off. That loss was preceded by another embarrassing loss at home to Texas-Arlington. But those were Molinari years...

I've been to the relatively new UNI basketball arena and it is not a bad arena at all, let alone the worst venue in the conference. Maybe you were referring to the dome they used to use?

no, I actually wasn't really referring to just the arena at all, but the fine and exciting city of Cedar Falls and it's surrounding cornfields & climate...

It was not just Bradley fans who were opposed originally to UNI being added to the MVC. The private schools (Drake, Creighton, Tulsa, as well as BU) wanted another non-state school to balance the MVC, and didn't see much advantage in bringing in a school that was more of a football school than a basketball school. By adding UNI, it made 6 state schools (WSU, SIU, INSU, ILSU, SMSU, and UNI) vs. just 4 private schools. Many of the policy decisions of the conference affect schools differently depending whether they are state vs. private.
