Coach Mo

I know Coach Mo would be the first to say he is a little disappointed in his team's performance this season, but consider this...

WIU is currently 9-13, and they play at home today for a chance to get their 10th win.
That doesn't sound too impressive, but recall they only won 9 last year then lost their top scorers...so Coach Molinari didn't know what to expect this year with virtually none of their scoring coming back...

Plus ....they still have several winnable games left - at least 5 more against teams whose RPI are in the 300 range...so they could conceivably still get to 12 or 13 wins.
That would give WIU more wins than in any year since 1998!!

But next year should be better -- their returning best scorer for next year is just now a sophomore, and 12 of their best 14 players (they lose a 9 ppg and 6 ppg scorer) will return next year.

I'm one of the few posters who believe we let Coach Mo go to soon! I'm really glad to see him do well. He is a class guy all around.

I can't say I was opposed to his dismissal, considering I thought it would be impossible not to compete for an MVC title with the talent he assembled on his last BU team. However, I had those feelings thinking we were hiring someone qualified for the job. In hindsight, it may have been a year or two too soon.

Mediocre with him mediocre without him, kind of a push in my opinion.

Yup. One era couldn't score, other era couldn't defend. One era couldn't win on the road, other era couldn't win at home. One era could compete for league titles, one era couldn't. Pick your poison.

Are you satisfied with no league titles since 1996? Yes or No answer please.

I'm not but if I remember correctly the Valley was really horrible many of the years Slo Mo was competing for league titles.

Can somebody research that, I'm way to lazy to do it myself.

Hmm. Not so sure about that. We sent teams to the Sweet 16 and had multiple NCAA bids during his tenure. There league is no better now than it was then...and neither are we.

The RPI ranking of the Missouri Valley Conference during Jim Les' time at BU is:
2008-2009- 9
2007-2008- 9
2007-2008- 8
2006-2007- 6
2005-2006- 6
2004-2005- 8
2003-2004- 11
2002-2003- 12

the MVC ranked between 11th and the high teens in the 11 seasons Mo was at Bradley. In any objective was these things could be measured, the MVC was not as good a conference under Mo.

Where does it fall regarding NCAA bids and wins?

Certainly you can make an argument that the bottom with regards to UNI and Drake were awful the latter part of the 1990's. . .

But in general, that is one of the biggest myths that is always perpetuated out there. . .the top has always been outstanding. However, in the years immediately following Tulsa leaving, you simply saw the bottom teams become more formiddable.

Well, let's see. . .

In Mo's year 3 when the winning started. . .

1994 Tulsa Sweet 16, SIU 1st Rd

1995 Tulsa Sweet 16, SIU 1st Rd

1996 Tulsa and Bradley 1st Rd; Tulsa leaves Valley

1997 Illinois State 1st Rd

1998 Illinois State 2nd Rd (spent some time in the polls), CU breaks thru with 2nd place finish, Bruce Weber's first year at SIU

1999 SMS Sweet 16, Creighton 2nd Rd, Evansville 1st RD

2000 Creighton, Indiana State 1st Rd

2001 Indiana State 2nd Rd, Creighton 1st Rd

2002 SIU Sweet 16, Creighton 2nd Rd

You measure yourself against the best, not the worst. Everyone has passed us by from 1998-2008, anyway you slice it.
