Coaching candidates

Dane Fife assistant at Michigan State

Just saw this on twitter as well

Brian Wardle, Dane Fife, Greg Paulus among the coaches Bradley has interest in, per multiple sources.

Don't think we need to hire a guy who has his past. When a few of your front-page google results are all about your abuse of players, I'm not interested. No problem with demanding, hard coaches (we need one!), but also need a role model.

I think Wardle would be a good catch, but why would he go from green bay to bradley? I would think that a coach who is having success in the horizon would be looking to leapfrog the valley.

Yes, Paulus is a former Duke player. He is only 28, and just in his 2nd season as an assistant coach under Thad Matta, and he was an assistant for one year at Navy. Though he is an assistant at a great program, he has never had any head coaching experience, and has very little recruiting experience. IMO, he is not ready for a head coaching job.

Greg Paulus would be a rather interesting hire. He's only 28, and currently an assistant at Ohio State. I remember watching him at Duke back almost 10 years ago and thought he was a smart player. Seems really young to be a head coach, though.

Brian Wardle is doing a great job at Wisconsin-GB, but why on Earth would he leave his current job for Bradley? I love BU, and want us to get a great coach, but we're not exactly a desirable job at the moment. We're a last place team in a mid-major conference. About the only thing we have going for us is that next year (depending on who comes back) we could have as many as 8 seniors, which would allow for a coach to make a quick overhaul.

My personal hope is that whoever we hires decides to go away from JUCO's for a little while. Don't get me wrong, Pickett and Sutherland were great gets but I feel like we need to work on building a team. Get good young players who will be here 4 years and can grow together as a unit.

My vote is for LaVall Jordan. If JH selected, would not mind. The knock on JH for smokin would not deter players. Don't be naive. What percentage of D-1 football and basketball players smoke the same stuff? My bet is much more than you think. Consider all of the head basketball coaches with skeletons, etc. Remember the Rick Pitino stuff that came out in 2009? This guy is a piece of work but doesn't seem to have trouble convincing parents that he will "take care of their son", etc. Obviously just one example and many others out there. Look at the big picture before writing off JH.

Agreed that his lack of experience means his floor is low, but he may have a great ceiling for his potential. We don't know that. Interviews would try to figure that out. Time under Coach K and Thad Matta probably helps immensely.

can someone tell me why Paulus, who has zero head coaching experience and who has extremely limited assistant coaching experience should be considered over any of 50 better qualified candidates.
Paulus has far less experience than the guy Bradley hired in 2002 that we heard endlessly about his lack of experience.

When I think of Greg Paulus, I think of this:

I don't think of him as a smart player, and don't want a coach who I fear would coach this as well.

An ex-coach from this area told me a long time ago that major college schools don't need search firms to help them find coaches. They have a list of coaches they would want and they start calling. Being our new AD has been at some big time programs, I'm sure he has a list of coaches he might want to contact.

I hope you are right, Chico. It seems like every time we hire the search firms, everything gets messed up. Yes, I know they used the same search firm with the Chris Reynolds hire, but as I have said before, it was a fait accompli.

You are absolutely right. Chris Reynolds has been around some very successful coaches, from Chuck Buescher to Bob Knight and several others. Chris knows what it takes to be a successful basketball coach at the D-1 level. Ron Ferguson was the same way. When he hired Versace many people said "Who is he"? Well, they found out in a hurry.

I have total confidence in Chris to hire a coach that gets the program headed in the right direction.

I don't think there are too many people that are interested in Paulus really??¦..he does have more college experience than the coach hired in 02 though;)

I don't believe it's the search firms that caused everything to get messed up. It was the people from Bradley making the decisions who to hire. Bradley is under no obligation to hire anyone the search firm recommends.

I suspect Chris already has the next coach in mind and has already spoken to him.

As for players wanting to transfer, we'll just have to wait and see. It could go either way. Cunningham, Thomas and Taylor seem to be ones in the best position to transfer. You just never know, they may like the new coach better than Ford.

For the record, Jeff Rabjohns is always on top of stuff happening in Indiana, but Chris Reynolds has been gone from Indiana for a long time. I question how good his sources are. I think he has one of those names right. Bradley can do a lot better than Dane Fife, and I can't believe they would go after Greg Paulus. I am surprised Rabjohns didn't include Dan Dakich or Mike Davis' names.

Five potential candidates to replace Geno Ford as Bradley men's basketball coach
per Dave Reynolds

http://www.pjstar.com/article/20150322/SPORTS/150329761/12701/SPORTS?Start=1

Daves lists

Mike Davis
Anthony Grant
Scott Nagy
Brian Wardle
Dane Fife

Going off just that list I would personally would rank them
1.) Grant
2.) Davis
3.) Wardle
4.) Nagy
5.) Fife

I think I agree??¦??¦Wardle and Fife are pretty young and Nagy has been there for 20 years(hard to think he would leave for BU now)??¦??¦..I like Grant quite a bit??¦.but I would certainly support any of the 5

I would be ecstatic to land Grant. I think the most interesting part is that Dave says the process could be as short as 2 or 3 days. That would be such a refreshing change from the last head coach hiring debacle.
