Coaching candidates

most new hires would want to go get their own players - certainly Geno did...
Geno brought in 5 or 6 or even as many as 8 new ones every year

what's a bit simpler here is that there are ZERO future scholarships committed - so any new hire doesn't have the uncomfortable chore of telling a kid to go somewhere else vs. taking an incoming kid he did not recruit.

I suspect at least 3 or 4 scholarships will be open this spring for the new hire to get started but there's not a whole lot of talent just waiting out there for an offer --
It'll be interesting - will we go after the transfer market?

What I hope for more than anything is midwestern kids who can shoot the ball.
We will never beat many teams shooting 20-30%

Here is a blogger from Wisconsin-Green Bay reporting about Brian Wardle, who is likely to be Bradley's next coach -
http://phearthephoenix.webs.com/app...-wardle-a-potential-candidate-for-bradley-job

Also, here is a thread from the Marquette board with their thoughts about Wardle to Bradley-
http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=47065.0

Here is Wardle's record in 5 seasons as UW-GB's head coach-
Season.... School....... Conf..... G...W...L.....W-L%
2010-11...Green Bay..Horizon..32..14..18.. .438
2011-12...Green Bay..Horizon..30..15..15.. .500
2012-13...Green Bay..Horizon..34..18..16.. .529
2013-14...Green Bay..Horizon..31..24...7... .774
2014-15...Green Bay..Horizon..33..24...9... .727
Career....Green Bay..Horizon..160..95..65.. .594

Notes: Green Bay won the regular season Horizon League title in 2013-14.
Wardle has never won the Horizon League Tournament, and never appeared in the NCAA Tournament. He has made it to the NIT the past 2 seasons, going 0-2.

Having Kirk Wessler tell us what we need in a coach at Bradley is laughable. Wessler was Geno's biggest fan and apologist. We hired the right A.D. and if he needs help finding the right guy he has a list of people he has played under and worked for that will help. Kirk needs to go back in the corner and hug his Geno bobble head.

a lot of people who don't do internet or read message boards - appreciate getting coverage in the newspaper - so I think in that regard they have certainly done a very good job putting out stories on all the happenings in BU athletics..

Coaching Candidates

IMO, Kirk Wesslers list of important qualities for a new coach were very much directed at raining on any chance of hiring JH who Kirk is 1000% against.
1. High moral character and integrity. How does one truly know the moral character and integrity of any candidate? Clearly, this was directed at JH.
2. Experience as a successful head coach. Does he mean a Div.1 head coach? A Div.2 or 3? Junior College or High School? Clearly, this is also directed at JH.
3. Significant experience at a Mid-Major. Cummon Kirk! Did Versace have Mid Major experience? Did Tom Izzo? Bob Knight? Coach K.? Again, this is directed at JH in my opinion.
I'm not touting JH for our next coach....there are several outstanding candidates and I would be happy with any of them, whomever CR selects.
My concern is that here we go again with our PJS Sports Editor trying to use his position to influence a coaching selection. Stay out of it Kirk! Selecting a coach or eliminating a candidate is not your job.

When did Kirk "I wanna be Phil Thoebald" Wessler run the BU athletics program? His BS agenda needs to stop now. Just make a point of ignoring him and your lives will be much better. I stopped reading his garbage years ago. He should have been fired or called out by the PJS staff for putting the Jerrance Howard crap up 6 months after it happened. IGNORE HIM...NOW

He said it was a wish list didn't he?........would any of us want to take a guy that was head coach with a proven track record over and assistant with no track record?......I know assistants have to start someplace but all things being equal I think I would want that....wouldn't all of us want someone with high moral character and integrity?

I don't these things are targeting JH Wiz.............

I definitely see what Wiz was seeing in that article. It also rules out several other very good names if you stick strictly to Kirk's guidelines. But I think I agree with lefty in that all of the qualities mentioned by Kirk are desirable in a candidate. Since this is the real world and not one where we can build a new coach from scratch you have to compromise and/or take chances on a few of those qualities and hope you hit a home run, or at least a double.

It will be interesting to see how Kirk treats whomever is the new coach after the way he treated Geno. He obviously liked Geno a lot, which is understandable, he seemed like a good guy. But Kirk might end up letting his resentment at seeing his friend leave cloud his objectivity. And that would be when I would start to say let's get a new sports editor. Objectivity is an ideal quality in my perfect sports editor. We'll just have to wait and see.

..But Kirk might end up letting his resentment at seeing his friend leave cloud his objectivity....

cloud what?? objectivity??
There hasn't been objectivity in anything I have seen in the PJS since Kenny Jones ran the sports dept..
Lien, Theobald, and everyone since have been extremely un-objective

Kirk Wessler is not going to select the next basketball coach, so everyone can relax. Chris Reynolds is not going to select the next basketball coach, based on what Kirk Wessler or anybody on this board thinks.

Chris Reynolds just called me and asked me to help him pick the next HC. Weird.

If our next basketball coach is not already finalized and not announced, we may not be able to get the more experienced coaches, from a big name school. As more and more jobs open up, coaches such as Mike Davis and Anthony Grant, will most likely be interested in jobs better than Bradley.

Knight and Coach K each spent 5+ years at Army before landing at Indiana and Duke, respectively. I think considering the fact that they play I-A football, Army basketball would be considered mid-major (especially in the 60s and 70s).

All that aside, do you really think CR cares what Kirk Wessler likes in a coach? I don't.

Looking into this Brian Wardle, I see some red flags:

First, what I see as positives:
1) He's improved every year he's been at Green Bay, barring his last year, but that was pretty even with the previous one. Both years they won over 20 games.
2) He's been to the post-season the last 3 years. The NIT the last 2.

Now the things that scare me:
1) Horizon League isn't exactly a powerhouse conference. We've already seen what can go wrong when we go with a guy that has had success in a conference that isn't as competitive as the MVC.
2) He's never won his conference tournament.
3) He's never won a post-season game.
4) The small issue with abusive language toward his players.

My gut still tells me Jerrance Howard is our best bet at future success, but my gut is wrong a lot, too, so I'll wait it out and trust in our new AD.

Curious what others think about Wardle. Honestly, if he ends up being the choice, I won't be disappointed, but just thought I'd point out some things that give me hesitation. I'll tell Reynolds all of this next time we talk basketball on the phone.
