Ron Sanchez resigns as Charlotte head coach to assume the position of associate head coach at Virginia, a position he had held previously:

Interesting. Tony Bennett (head coach at Virginia) is only 54, and not likely to step down any time soon.
Sanchez took over a horrible Charlotte program in 2018 that had a 6-23 record the previous season and which had not had a winning conference record in 9 years. He built the program back to a degree of respectability and seemed to be headed up. This past season, he won 22 games (their most since 2001), and won the championship of the CBI.

When Sanchez first announced he was stepping down as Charlotte's head coach earlier today, he only said it was "to pursue other opportunities".
He never mentioned that he already had plans to return to Virginia as Associate Head Coach.

But literally minutes later, Virginia posted the announcement that Sanchez was returning as their Associate Head Coach, and writers who had reported him resigning at Charlotte raced to edit their stories.

Interesting Twitter thread on Sanchez by D1 Docket, a Charlotte guy:
Quick Thread on Sanchez and the last five years:
•0-3 in C-USA Tournament (one bid league)
•Under .500 overall and in league.
•Allowed a 47 possession game to happen while trailing double-digits entire 2nd half.

•Wanted to play UVA style ball but couldn’t crack Top 175 in minutes continuity (@kenpomeroy), only other school in that group with no coaching changes was Kentucky.
•Team would just pack it in early, letting teams back in to games (see final game against EKU)

Next coach:
•Prior HC experience is a must, 3 hires in a row with none. AD will be rightly crucified if we hire another assistant.
•Finally broke out of buyout cycle, can actually offer competitive salary.
•Yes I am available for podcasts.

Charlotte is a great job for the right guy. The campus is beautiful, and Charlotte is a growing and thriving "new south" city in a top 25 market. The current coach was making $700K at the time of his departure. I would expect they'll be in the $850K - $1 million range with an experienced coach.

Bryant head coach Jared Grasso takes unexplained leave of absence-
https://twitter.com/coach_grasso/status/1724083101897265621/

Bryant head coach Jared Grasso has resigned. He has been on a leave of absence since September after Bryant began an investigation into "inappropriate behavior". No further official details have been announced, though some rumors have arisen. A few days after taking the leave of absence, he was charged with a hit and run accident, which oddly, was later dismissed

Ohio State just fired head basketball coach Chris Holtmann - https://twitter.com/GoodmanHoops/status/1757811126304182672

Holtmann had good success at Butler prior to being hired by Ohio State in 2017, and he continued with successful seasons his first 5 years at Ohio State. But mediocre records the last 2 years were enough for the AD to dump him before the season is over.

TOSU owes him 14 million. If you have to be canned, not a bad way to go.

That twitter post by Pete Thamel was deleted, possibly because his numbers were not correct.

This article says that based on a contract extension signed in 2022, Ohio State owes him another $12.8 million - https://www.dispatch.com/story/sports/college/basketball/2024/01/30/chris-holtmann-contract-salary-buyout-fired-ohio-state-basketball-buckeyes/72401473007/

Pete Thamel later tweeted this update with the $12.8 million figure - https://twitter.com/PeteThamel/status/1757893908460109857

There are a lot of rumors about who might be considered candidates to replace Holtmann, none of them official. But I have seen several lists that include a couple MVC coaches.

If you have to be canned, 12.8 million isn't a bad way to go.
