Coaching Rumors

I've been following all the coaching changes, and wonder,
is Chris Lowery going to end up as a bridesmaid again?
Last year he was a hot young coaching candidate and didn't get much serious consideration for any of the 60 coaching spots that were filled.
Now this year with 40 more head coaching spots being filled, has he gone for interviews?
There are only a couple spots left open that wouldn't be a step down, so is he going to move up somewhere?

I agree..........100 job openings over the past 1-2 years, and dozens were top flight programs, Big Ten schools, SEC schools, Big programs...and Lowery has not to my knowledge been mentioned to have gone for an interview at any of them....interesting. Is he the next Rick Majerus....always mentioned but never considered seriously?
Here is something that is quite profound.

read this.................

One of the SIU sports writers & bloggers (Tom Weber) for SIU basketball -- who is also referred to as "SIU athletics spokesman" -- and works for SIU as the official
"Director of Media Services"
http://www.siuc.edu/media/becomeasaluki/bios/weber.html

...asked the SIU Athletic Director, Paul Moccia, point blank who has asked for permission to interview Chris Lowery.
Here is the answer as recorded on his web page....

"Wednesday, March 28, 2007...

I???‚¬?„?m averaging about one call per hour from writers across the country, asking whether anyone has contacted Moccia for permission to speak with Lowery.

(Athletic Director Paul) Moccia is more willing to respond. The truth is, no school has called asking for permission
."

Now that doesn't mean no school wants to talk to him or consider him, but it is a pretty remarkable fact given how "hot" Chris Lowery supposedly is as a head coach candidate.

Could it mean that Lowery is NOT as hot as the media would have you believe?
You decide...........only time will tell.
I have said all along that Lowery's style of play will hinder his consideration by other top schools.

Note this comment from a well known University of Michigan fan site/blog
who actually favors going after Lowery...but consedes this:

"There are some concerns. SIU does play slow-down: Kenpom has the Salukis 312th in adjusted pace. The accusations that Big Ten basketball is basically the Carlisle Pistons versus the Riley Knicks are not likely to decrease if he's hired."

"Lowery's offense is plagued by turnovers -- ugh -- and awful offensive rebounding."

"

Are they waiting to see if Lowery can win with his own recruits?

As in the Stan Heath, Dan Monson, Tubby Smith, Steve Alford cases, just getting the hottest guy doesn't always turn out so well in the end.

I am comfortable enough with my sexuality to say that Jim Les is hotter looking than any of those guys mentioned!

Women the world over would agree, along with several men.

Especially when he wears the red blazer. Yum. :-P

Good, interesting points about Lowery. Maybe he isn't being sought after?

The style they use isn't attractive for everyone (AD's and boosters I mean) but it's hard to argue the results. Maybe there is concern over his age and the fact that he has only been a HC for 3 years?

In any case, it's obviously better for the league if he stays put. The longer this goes, the more I think he will stay put. The only other thing is maybe people are waiting for the domino effect after Kentucky hires their new coach.

The definition of Rewarding mediocrity..

IPFW (Indiana-Purdue- Fort Wayne) head coach Dane Fife
is 22-35 in his two seasons, and was only 12-17 (3 of their wins against non-D-I) this past
year and their SOS (they are an independent) was 250!
Their 9 D-I wins were over teams with the following RPI's:
327, 291, 327, 331, 160, 329, 331, 293, 329!
(so 9 of their 12 wins were against non-D-I's or one of the worst 10 teams in the nation!
And a full 11 of their 12 wins were against either a non-D-I or a bottom 50 team!)
Next season they go to the Mid-Con Conference.
But IPFW just gave him a raise and a lengthy contract expension through 2013!

That gives mediocrity a bad name! :-o

The Search Firm that was hired by Iowa to help with finding a new coach has now removed the "Job Listing" from its web site,
prompting speculation that Iowa has now found its candidate.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen states
"Could the search to replace Steve Alford be complete already?
There is no word from the University of Iowa as yet, but the search firm that UI hired ...(Parker Executive Search)"

Now has the listing

"removed from the site."

Here are some really interesting rumors...

---That Kentucky is about to finalize a huge deal to hire Thad Matta away from Ohio State.
It is being reported on the premium Rivals board...and here is the text:

Another Rumor......FWIW Reply

From NDNAtion.......

Seedy K. who writes for a rag in Louisville called the LEO reported that UK and Thad Matta have worked out a deal. I've pasted the actual report below. Although you have to take what this guy says with a large grain of salt, there have also been numerous ocassions when he actually seems to know something.

Rumor & Innuendo

The latest name I heard.
Talk about a rep on the line, check this out. Years ago I had a source advise that Barnhart would be UK???‚¬?„?s next AD, before his predecessor Larry Ivy was fired. I reported the eerily accurate info here. That same source called unsolicited Saturday morning. He teasingly asked if I wanted to know the next Kentucky coach? Duh! His words: ???‚¬?“The deal was struck last weekend in Lexington during the sub-regional. Thad Matta will be UK???‚¬?„?s next coach.???‚¬?? Makes no sense. Hey, I???‚¬?„?m just the messenger. The rep on the line is that of my three-time SOY (Source of the Year).

Reggie Theus is about to parlay his one year of success at New Mexico State into a HUGE payday.
New Mexico State can't afford to pay Theus much more than mid-major salary, but Theus seems to be positioning himself to take one of the BIG offers out there such as Arkansas or Iowa.

Michigan has reportedly narrowed its finalists to just three, JohnBeilein (from West Virginia), Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings, and Chris Lowery.
They also supposedly have a "B" list and it may include Reggie Theus and Washington State's Tony Bennett.
Tommy Amaker seems to be a prospect for the job at Harvard.

Steve Alford has been talking to his friend Dan Dakich (recently fired head coach of Bowling Green)
about being assistant on Alford's staff at New Mexico.

And one Iowa media source is reporting that Iowa is working out the finalities and will hire Rick Majerus.

If true, this is ridiculous, really a loss of perspective. Is the academic picture at the University of Kentucky so stellar that they have this type of money to try and lure a coach? BD is a great coach, but he's not the only one. 3 million could buy a lot of books or fund a lot of scholarships.

As much as I believe in student-athletes, that is NOT ridiculous. How much money do you think the school brings in if they have good basketball team(read: NEED a good coach), how upset do potential donors get at a program like UK if they have a bad basketball team. Kentucky's reason for hiring a good coach is a very smart business decision. Even Bradley is seeing great dividends as far as donations with the success of the basketball team. I understand it seems ridiculous to pay a coach that much, but that is what they are worth to a program as far as revenue, in donations, tickets, and TV deals.

This article says Arkansas now focuses on five candidates:
John Calipari
Rick Majerus
Mike Montgomery
Jamie Dixon
Bruce Weber

and their "B" list contains:
Dana Altman
Mark Turgeon
Scott Sutton
Gregg Marshall
Chris Lowery
Anthony Grant
Reggie Theus
Sean Sutton

This article believes a new coach will be announced today--

After interviewing Altman and Calipari in Atlanta, Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles, who is conducting the search, returned to Fayetteville, Arkansas on Saturday.

"It???‚¬?„?s unlikely that Broyles would have returned if he did not have an agreement in principle with a coach or was on the verge of finalizing a deal."
