Congress wants to ban chewing tobacco and dip in Majors

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5086308

GOOD LUCK!

This quote is great....

At the hearing earlier Wednesday, Anna Eshoo, a California Democrat, wondered aloud: "Why don't they just chew gum if they feel the need to chew something?"

:roll::roll::roll::roll:

I'm all for that. I think it is super disgusting and I hate how high school and college age baseball players think it is cool.

But you know why they think it is cool? Because you look at all the major leaguers and what are a lot of them doing? Interesting I just talked about role models in the Masters Thread, athletes CAN be a huge impact on a lot of young people even ones that aren't little kids. I hate it when I turn on a game and they are picturing a player talking about what a great player he is, and there he is just dipping away in front of all the kids watching.

No need for it to be allowed while they are playing, if they want to do it they can wait til later. It is of no benefit to the game. I agree go get some gum, it is a lot better for you long term. You don't see basketball players running down the court with a dip in, you don't see a teacher or a secretary or whatever else with it, why should baseball players be allowed to do it at work? On your own time, do whatever you want to harm yourself. But when you are representing your company or team or whatever else's image, you don't do that stuff IMO.

Players will never allow it cause so many do it, but I would be all for it!

Tons of golfers do it!

It is because in these sports there is plenty of standing around.

The gum comment is ridiculous.....gum does nothing to satisfy a nicotine craving.

I agree that kids might be affected....but since it is already allowed...i would find it tough to outlaw.

I don't chew and I think it is a disgusting habit, but if they try to ban this then what is next? There is nothing illegal with chewing tobacco and frankly I think Congress can spend their time better doing something more productive.

There is no need to step in on something as dumb as this. It just feels like they are trying to control every aspect of life that they can. It is a personal choice and if they want to use it, then use it.

I would agree with that on their own time, if they want to do it to themselves fine. But if you are a public or influential figure, during work you have responsibilities to represent the people you work for, and more importantly to be a good role model. Why don't business men chew tobacco during important meetings? Because they represent something that doesn't want that image, I don't understand why baseball teams/organizations are any different. If a ball player can chew on the job, then I think a teacher should be able to as well. Both are probably equally influential to many kids, why not? It is not illegal, why do we control it there? Only difference is people don't see the direct impact because the ball player isn't staring the kid in the face every day like the teacher.

FWO, I don't think the gum thing is ridiculous. Yes they might have a craving, but does that mean no one with a craving can ever quit, cause nothing will ever satisfy it? Try quitting and chewing gum or something is what they are saying. It could also be aimed at people who are just starting out or about to start out with chewing tobacco. Chew gum instead!

I do agree it will probably never be stopped though.

I do not chew nor do I like seeing someone with a huge wad in their mouth spitting nasty brown juice! Now that I made that statement, Congress should clean up their own dirty habits like taking money from lobbyist an special interet before they start going after sports figure for doing something that does not harm anyone but themselves.

Personally, I don't have a feeling one way or the other about the actual idea of removing it from baseball. That having been said, I also don't have a problem with them saying something in regards to chewing. The title is slightly misleading in that it implies they are trying to ban chewing in general - and it isn't as if they are threatening to place legislation - they simply said it would be something they would like to see out of baseball. So if it does happen, it will be the players union and the MLB deciding it. There isn't any forcing, or legislation being drafted here.

Yeah.

Just as a user myself...I don't want people thinking that chewing gum is the same.

I never said it was the same. But I don't think it is ridiculous to think somebody can quit. The way you made it sound nobody could ever quit chewing in the dugout, because they would have to satisfy their craving. He is just suggesting an alternative, not saying it would satisfy a craving. But at some point in order to quit, which people have done, you can't satisfy a craving. That is why I say it is not ridiculous. Not that it isn't very hard to quit, I'm sure it is.
