Controversy over running up the score

Teams are running up the score more in games these last couple years, because the NET and the NCAA at-large selection criteria now utilize advanced analytics that consider margin of victory or loss. Coaches know this and if they have a team that looks like a bubble team for an at-large bid, or for concerns about seeding, especially the poor seeds mid-majors always get, they might consider trying to increase their winning margins. Nonetheless, it infuriates some coaches who find themselves on the losing side.

Saturday, in a game between Memphis and Utah State, Utah State won 99-75. The outcome was not in doubt late in the game. Utah State left their starters in the game even after Hardaway pulled his starters with over 3 minutes left in the game. Utah State lead 86-73 with under 2 minutes left in the game. and then they went on to outscore Memphis 13-2 over the final 95 seconds, including a couple of showboating dunks in the final 17 seconds (see video) when most teams would have simply dribbled out the clock.
Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway went through the handshake line lecturing the Utah State players and coaches about what he repeatedly called a classless move. He further discussed it in the postgame press conference (see article).

Another dumb as- move by the NCAA, final scores should not be relevant in how many points you win by in that game.

I don't think it's appropriate for the opposing coach to be talking to the other team's players. That's asking for trouble and, if I'd be pissed as a coach if the other coach started publicly scolding or talking to my players. Hardaway certainly has a valid point, but he shouldn't be talking to the other team.

I agree. He should voice any concerns to the other coach, and not in a provocative way.

I thought NET removed MOV from their algorithm while Kepom had a cap? My AI must be behind.
Yes, the NCAA initially had margin of victory in the NET, but removed it with an update in 2020. But for the purposes of at-large picks and seeding, the selection committee uses other analytics like Kenpom and BPI, which do incorporate margin of victory (Kenpom now has a 10-point cap).

I support running up the score! Not against all teams, but against Memphis, it is is to overlook.
Memphis has earned a salute. 😎
awww.. don't forget who one of their assistant coaches is....

I still have mixed feelings about DB and how he roasted Wardle when he left Bradley after he graduated. Did he leave on good terms after his brief coaching stint here?
