Virginia is whining not only because they lost to Bradley in the CBI
but also because they did such a poor job of organization and sales, that they lost $

Remember, this is a school that will readily pay upwards of $75,000-$80,000 to a cupcake like Winson-Salem State and Longwood, just for a chance to pad their win total, then they whine about far less $ being spent to get a home tournament game.
Their ticket prices maxxed out at $10 and they still couldn't even sell 4,000 for game against in-state opponent Richmond.
I am glad we beat their butts.......
 
That's pretty bad. They get about 5K a game and we get 8. Oops. Sorry Cavs get better and make the NIT or the NCAAs next time.

They were whining? Really?

This is the only quote from the article:
"We knew what the financial risk was going in, and ultimately it was decided to play in the tournament," Oliver said. "It was a chance for Sean [Singletary] and the other seniors to keep playing."

And this was the only other thing attributed to a university official:
"Had U.Va. won its semifinal Wednesday and then played in a best-of-three championship series that lasted through the final game, the university might have lost as much as $300,000, said Jon Oliver, the Cavaliers' executive associate athletic director."
How is it whining when they said they knew about the financial difficulties they'd encounter? It says so in the first paragraph of the story. The rest of the story is facts about what kind of money they spent and the money they lost.

And for the record, they did sell more than 4,000 for the Richmond game -- barely.

and come on...they have an athletic budget of nearly $60 million,
and like I said, they would have had to pay Bradley at least $30,000 as if it was a guarantee game
and I can link you to other stories showing some BCS schools pay up to $80,000 to get opponents far, far inferior to BU.
So the real problem isn't the opponent, the tournament, or anything else, except that they did a poor job or organizing and getting fans and so they claim they lost $$, that's exactly what the article says, and that's what I showed that the article says.

But they still sold nearly 6000 tickets for two of their games, and even at an incredibly dumb price of $10, that's
still $60,000, plus they admit they even made more on parking, concessions, and surely made some on the TV deal...

If I were them I'd hire Ice Miller firm and find out where all the money went, and
WHY they lost $$....I really doubt BU had these kinds of losses.

BU sold 6000-9000 tickets per game at from $12 to $30, so I would guess BU did a little better than UVa.
Maybe they need to hire Rob Bogardus, KK, and the BU crew who seem do get things done so well.
And don't they have some helpful and wealthy boosters to help out??
Just maybe some people also need to recognize how good the people are that we have and that Bradley doesn't have
disasters like UVa seems to have with their poor organization and cash losses!!

How did I know after reading Tornado's opening post, that Scouter would not be able to resist a rebuttal. Classic.:-D
 
In defense of UVA--Bradley will really struggle to make money off the CBI, if at all. Also, playing in the CBI is a bigger deal to Bradley fans that it is to UVA fans. That's not good, bad or indifferent, just a fact.

That is why Bradley is a good bet for the CBI or NIT--something where the gate matters. It has always been that way since the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's etc. Bradley basketball has always drawn well. That hasn't changed regardless of the AD, President, Head Coach, etc.

The CBI games weren't a money maker for anyone except I guess the tournament organizer. Anytime you have an event where people have to pay to get in it kinda makes it a different deal. I must admit..if I was watching ACC games all year it would be a little tougher to come out and support an average UVA team in late March and watch them play Old Dominion.
 
But you make it sound like the one and only reason to get into a post-season tournament is
"to make money". And I have a hard time accepting that you can characterize all fans as being so mono-mentality that you can know the CBI means more to all BU fans than it does to all UVa fans.
In this world you make your own success, you don't whine when it fails to fall into your lazy lap..

But even if what you say is true, then why do the event organizers seek out the 7th, 8th, 9th best teams in the BCS conferences...?
I have to conclude that someone thinks those BIG, STATE schools do actually have a few good fans that'll show up NIT and CBI games.
Virginia did draw almost 6,000 for the BU game.
I have to think if they were a bit more positive, did some better promotion, if the UVa administration and Athletic Dept. had put a better spin and spent some time working on it, they'd have done far better.

Who they hey wants to go to a tournament when even the administration and head coach are calling it the Weed Eater Bowl...
BU even overcame the negative local publicity and has done quite well on their part with this CBI.

I guess instead of saying woe is Virginia, and it's really a tough break for them, and they sure did lose a whole lot of money...

then what you are saying is to confirm EXACTLY what I am saying, that UVa looks so bad simply because next to how BU has done it, they sure DO look bad.
Because Bradley (their fans included) has done an incredibly fine job of planning, organizing, promotion, and legwork in order for this to be a success.

At the end of the Superbowl or any other endeavor, you can be a fan of the winners & crown the them and congratulate them, or you can be a fan of the losers and pity them and feel sad for them.
I think BU has earned the right to the praise here, and tuff luck that UVa has not.

?? every event ever held at my kids' school...either junior hi or HS was NOT a money maker, even though they try to get some $$ in gate receipts.
But they don't give up and cancel everything.
They organize, volunteer, work, plan, promote, and simply do the best they can, just like a whole lot of the rest of us in every endeavor we do.
We don't sit and whine like a crybaby about how costly it was and how it looks like the Weed Eater Bowl.
You can (A) work hard and do for yourself or you can (B) stand around waiting for someone to do for you then whine when they don't.
Consider the first option (A), as the lines seem to be getting shorter all the time over there and longer with the other option.

Im not disagreeing at all. This tournament makes a lot of sense for schools like Bradley, Tulsa, Creighton, Wichita State, Dayton, etc. Basically basketball mad schools in towns/cities like the ones mentioned. That's why it wasn't such a good deal for UVA (as they found out).

This event is different from the NCAA and NIT. You have to guarantee a certain amount of money to get in. That is not the case with the other two. I don't think this has anything to do with praising anybody or even with UVA whining. I don't think anyone at UVA is whining. They made a choice to participate and it turned out to be a bad one. It happens.

Regarding the making money this tournament is different. That's why it is such a different animal. If teams had to pay to get into a football bowl game you would see a different scenario. If this tournament were all merit based then many of the schools wouldn't have turned it down.

That being said, once you are in it you might as well play to win and Bradley has done that. Good for them and the fans.
 
As well as this has turned out for BU, I still hope we never play in it again. I want to be in the NCAA and I would still rather play in the NIT and have a shot at the Garden if the NCAA is not a possiblity. If neither one of those is possible than the CBI has clearly worked out well but should not be our first or second choice IMO
 
I do think the Virgina Athletic Dept looks bad by supplying these type of numbers to the newpaper reporter. I also have a hard time understanding how they lost so much money.

Revenue (assumptions):
$110,000 - ticket sales (16,325 over 3 games assuming 1/3 adults and 2/3 student)
$85,000 - refreshments (on average, each ticket buyer spends $5)
$25,000 - parking: (attending adults pay $5 to park)
$220,000 - total revenue

Cost to Play (assumptions)
$180,000 - pay to play (CBI fee)
$0 - arena rental (JPJ arena owned by school)
$180,000 - Total Cost to Play

Operating Costs
So at this point, Virginia is $40,000 in the black. So, in order to achieve a net loss of $150,000, they spent $190,000 on operating costs such as advertising and marketing and event operations for 3 events.

Am I missing something? Seems like the Cavaliers were just that ... very cavalier with their operating costs. The school is suitably named.

Just curious. Why do you believe the NIT is so much better than the CBI? I understand that the quality of teams in the NIT is a bit better than the CBI, and that money does not determine where someone will play, but when you come right down to it, both tourneys are filled with a bunch of "also-rans". Therefore, I don't really see a huge difference between the two other than the money aspect of it.
 
I know this may have been discussed before, but how again is the money distributed between the CBI and the teams participating in it? For example, if Bradley took in an even $60,000 for a game, does that all go to the CBI contigent, or does the CBI and Bradley split that amount? And what happens if a team falls short of or takes in more than the $60,000 figure?
 
Aside from the money the NIT gets broader coverage from the media and is more of a known entity to potential recruits. In addtion playing at MSG would be amazing and I would love the chance to see BU play thier.

If most of the people attending the game than were students than the parking number might be a little high. Using the same logic the refeshments might be high also since they dont serve beer.
