Cubs management has placed the season in doubt with their new closer. He was 29 out of 38 saves last year. Nice percetage of 76%. That means he blows 1 out of every 4. (9 blown saves out of 38 last year and now he has already blown his first). Carlos Marmol to the front of the line please.

How have they put the season in doubt? He'll probably settle in. Mariano Rivera has started off a season or two blowing a save. C'mon, just keep putting him out there, and hope it doesn't happen much more.

i think it is more noteworthy that the cardinals still don't have a closer and the closer the cardinals named blew a save on the first day.

I was about to say the same thing. I braved the freezing temps on opening day to watch a blown save. It is ok, we cardinal fans are getting used to bullpen losses.

Carlos is extremely valuable in the setup role.....I think they put him in in the 7th last nite and look what he did. Hopefully Gregg will settle in. Closers blow saves....the season ISN'T in doubt.

Now if he continues to struggle then they will have to look at other options.

Thing to note, the Cubs used Marmol today in the bottom of the 9th to get the save instead of putting Gregg in. I know some will say that Gregg pitched the last out of the 8th and then blew it in the 9th so he was being given a day off but the point of Lou putting him in in the 8th was because they had the day off before so he had extra rest. Looks like Lou's confidence in Gregg is already shaking by putting Marmol in today. Of course Marmol made the save too (Not without some interesting moments tho.)

Lou had all of spring training here in beautiful Mesa to pick a closer, so after having all that time to make a decision I would doubt he's lost confidence in Gregg already. A few days ago the Cubs were World Series bound because they won the first game of the season. Now their new closer is a bum already because he blew his a save. Cub fans, Cub fans.

I don't have a problem with Gregg being the closer and maybe Lou hasn't lost confidence in him but if he hasn't then put him back in there today. It was a pressure situation and if Lou has that confidence in him then he would've put him in today not Marmol.

Oh my God!!!! The season is over!!! Give me a break, the Cardinals bullpen is garbage, the Brewer's starting piching is non exsistant, the Reds, Astros, and Pirates are non issues. The Cubs are fine.

Did you see Lou's post game? he said openly that Gregg is the closer. He put Marmol in because he doesn't like overpitching the relievers. I'd put a 100 bucks down that Gregg would pitch in a closer spot tonight. Marmol would set up...MAYBE. The issue is alot of their other bullpen is shakey. Angel Guzman and Neal Cotts both walked 2 and 1 batters respectively. Finally got out of it but gave up 2 runs in the process.

I'd look for Gregg to be the closer tonight. but seeing Marmol when gregg's pitch count excedes a set amount the previous start. However, by allstar break...I think Marmol will 1) request to be closer 2) Request trade to somewhere where he will be the closer.

also....did anyone mention that we're a week in? oh right....IT'S BEEN ONE WEEK!!!! calm down everyone.

enough time for:
1) Prince fielder to try slim fast
2) Dusty Baker to ruin some great pitching prospects
3) Miguel Tejada to embarrass himself
4) Carpenter to get hurt...and thus preventing the Cardinals from doing anything
5) The pirates to well...do what the pirates do best...
and
6) Cubs to win the division and build up the biggest hopes of fans in baseball

I don't get this board. Every time comments are made people take it as a panic. Go back and read. I just said I really think Cubs management blew it with their new closer based on last year's stats and what he did in his first try. No panic. I really don't give a crap if the Cubs ever win another game. Won't ruin my life. It's just baseball and all I was doing was starting a conversation about what I see is a flaw. If you think blowing 9 saves in 38 attempts last year is good, then you have your man. Now it is 10 blown saves in his last 39 attempts. Not much of a high quality closer in my opinion. Oh, and I think Mickey Mouse could be the closer and the Cubs would still win the division. But who cares about the division. If they don't win the World Series the season will not be a success because that is the ONLY goal and should be the only goal every year.

Only to shatter them for the third year in a row by winning ZERO playoff games, for the third year in a row.

so for the past 2 years i've built up expectations
and been very optimistic...you know...cub fan like

no more...0 expectations. Hoping that pans out for the better this year...haha

Looks like it is Gregg for the save tonight

Maybe not since Hill just doubled and Theriot scored from first to give the Cubs a 4 run lead.

Gregg let up a run in the 9th and made the inning interesting but came through in the end. Good win. Go Cubs Go.

You can expect to make the playoffs barring serious injury. As Billy Beane once said, "It's my job to get them to the playoffs, after that its a crap shoot".

Remember when the Cubs went nine years between playoff appearances 89-98. Making the playoffs is good and if they do it often enough it'll probably happen.
