Dave Reynolds PJS article Sunday, 7/8

Thanks Dave Reynolds....very nice coverage.

But I have a couple questions....

*Of course the BU staff isn't going to talk about recruiting, nobody tips their hat on this subject.
But, Reynolds says BU has 3 scholarships for 2008. Daniel West has "spoken for" one of them. But isn't Xavier Crawford still online for one of them also? If not, then this news conflicts with what we've seen in the past.

*Also -- Dave Reynolds says:
"Muskegon, Mich., guard Daniel West has already spoken for one"
Has Daniel West moved from Saginaw to Muskegon? The two cities are over 100 miles apart.

*The name Devin Hill is going to be a whole lot more unfamiliar to people than Matt Roth, Lewis Jackson, and Iman Shumpert.
Maybe DR can give people a link to info about him-

* since guys like Shumpert and Jackson are likely to go "high major", then surely BU is also watching some other 2008 kids. Just in case anyone wants to see who some of the rest are:

RE: Xavier Crawford

RE: Xavier Crawford

I am not an insider but I have always thought X would not be coming here since Ray Brown left. I thought in my mind that there was only about a 1% chance that he still would come to Bradley.

I have heard it is kind of a wait and see thing with Xavier. It all depends on what kind of year he has the staff thinks they might be able to get a better player.

I thought there were four remaining scholarships for 2008.

I only know of nine that are signed and three others that are "spoken for".....XC, Buycks, and West. That would still leave one more unless I've missed something.

Buycks went to a JUCO so he is 2 years a way.
That's right....I remember seeing that now.

OK....so we have four left and only two that are "spoken for". I'm still left wondering how one of those four seems to have suddenly disappeared.

From the article, it talks about UNI's trip:
Summer breeze: Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson faces a different kind of August as he will prepare his 11-member team to represent the United States in the World University Games in Thailand. The Panthers return three starters, including all-league center Eric Coleman.

It should also be noted:

That's a big time exemption!

SG---
Here are the players that right NOW will be using scholarships in 2008-2009
Singh, Warren, Egolf, Maniscalco, Thompson, West, Cole-Scott, Collins, Austin, Wilson.
That's TEN accounted for, then possibly Xavier Crawford based on some articles that appeared about the time XC went to Yuba which said he is still committed to BU.

That would leave two scholarships, but of course, maybe Xavier Crawford won't be here, and maybe Sam Singh might decide to hang 'em up if his knees give him more trouble.

So I'd say Bradley has anywhere from 2-4 scholarships that still will be filled with new recruits before fall of 2008.

The nine that I spoke of are the current scholarship players on the roster. That leaves us four...with two of those supposedly "spoken for", but nothing in writing....XC and West. If West has already signed a LOI, then great...that would be nice!

I was just wondering where the "reporter" was getting information that we only have three available scholarships for 2008.

edited: Maybe I'm reading the article wrong when he says "the Braves are in the hunt for a number of top recruits for their three available scholarships (Muskegon, Mich., guard Daniel West has already spoken for one)". I read that as West taking one of the "three available".

I think he means we have 3 available and a 4th is already taken by West.
Even West cannot sign a LOI until this November, so nothing is certain.
I would have liked for Dave Reynolds to have addressed that issue with Xavier Crawford, although of course Jim Les could NOT have spoked to the topic.

I personally hope XC has a monster year at Yuba and still wants to come to BU.

Money talks.... Paid advertisement related to a team covered in the "Hoops" section. Hey, if they shoot you guys down then it is an obvious snub which may only suggest jealousy and fear for the competition.

Whaddya think, BradleyFans has a million dollar budget?
One tiny ad in the paper would probably cost more than the total spent over the past 2.5 years running the site!
Hopefully BradleyFans will continue to grow by word of mouth.

Not to be anti-growth or anything, but it almost seems better when it's word of mouth ... almost like a vetting. For the most part, WOM produces people who are, if not vastly knowledgeable, at least respectful of the team, coaches and sport in general.

Just a thought.

Oh, I thought it was a reference to posting in a manner like "vet" over on the other board!

BY THE WAY-- here's some real recruiting news.....from a premium article over on the Indiana Rivals site...

The main writer for IU Rivals, Mike Pegram, went to watch the Indiana Elite AAU team play in Cincinnati in the "Adidas It Takes 5IVE Classic"

He gave this report on Lewis Jackson:
"we stopped first in Cincinnati to watch Lewis Jackson lead his Indiana Elite team to a tough 66-64 quarterfinal win in the Adidas It Takes 5IVE Classic...
Jackson was solid with a couple nice drives and again showed the ability to get his team into transition opportunities. The Indiana team is very short handed now as Emmanuel Negedu is off playing preparing for an international event in Serbia and DeAndre Liggins is out with an injury. Shooter specialist Matt Roth and power forward Leonard Washington were also away. Given that it shouldn't be surprising this squad struggled in their Super Pool and fell in the semis later yesterday.

We spoke to Jackson after the quarterfinal game and he still has IU high but did indicate Gonzaga is making a strong push of late."

I could find no info on why Matt Roth was not playing with his AAU team, but possibly he's with his HS team at some event.

PS-- I found a funny line/quote in a premium article from this AAU event.
Apparently one of the kids, Demar DeRozan was pretty impressive. Here is info on him
http://depaul.scout.com/a.z?s=430&p=8&c=1&nid=1778009

But here is the quote:
"???‚¬??I???‚¬?„?d trade my whole team for Demar DeRozan. He???‚¬?„?s a monster.???‚¬??
----Submitted by an assistant coach of a Sweet 16 team from last season"

Sorry T. I was kinda kidding.

I got an idea, though... how about making up some T-Shirts and sell 'em through this site. I know a guy who can offer you a pretty fair deal making T-Shirts.

I know I would buy one and proudly wear it often.
