Dyricus and Kansas State

tornado

New member
It has been mentioned a few times that Dyricus Simms-Edwards is considering 3 or possibly 4 school choices, that include Bradley, Northern Iowa, Kansas State, and possibly still Saint Louis.

Jim Mattson's interview suggested those four schools above are in the running, but Dave Reynolds' column said it was down to BU/KSU/UNI.
Dave himself also said this.... "I'd guess that K-State has the inside track", and it sounds reasonable
as most kids want to aim to play on the biggest stage!

But here are just a few thoughts about Kansas State, and I hope Dyricus is listening..........

--they presently don't appear to have an open scholarship for 2009...but who knows what will happen.
Even if they do anticipate an open scholarship, I doubt they'll sit on it forever, as there are a whole lot
of top kids out there leaving schools like Kentucky, Memphis, etc...and I suspect K-State wouldn't mind
stocking up for the future by going after them...especially DeMarcus Cousins, that supposedly Martin really covets.

--it is very likely Dyricus will find virtually NO playing time there for a couple years, and may even be asked to redshirt.
The reasons are obvious below...

--right now, their PG is Jacob Pullen. He is a sophomore, so he's going to be their #1 PG for two more years,
just in case DSE was thinking of playing some PG.

--Their shooting guard status is pretty solid right now. Denis Clemente is their best player, and he's back next year.
(he is a PG/SG....can play both positions and is their top scorer.)
Their second shooting guard, Fred Brown, also an occasional starter, is among their four top returnees and they also
have a juco SG, Buchi Awaji, who'll be a senior next year, and he also plays double digit minutes.

--then of their incoming recruits already signed for next year, two of them are SG's...
6-4 Rodney McGruder (long time teammate of their 5-Star kid, Wally Judge) and 6-4 Nick Russell...both more
highly rated nationally than DSE.
and they also have another PG coming in, Will Spradling...and two other combo guards...Jordan Henriquez & Devon Peterson.
I hope DSE realizes he might just be on their list as just a deep fall back if they do have a scholarship.
Dyricus isn't even mentioned one time by K-State fans on any of their message boards...they seemingly couldn't care less about him there...

--lastly, sure it's a bigger stage, but go ask kids like Bill Cole, DeAaron Williams, Nathan Koster, Nick Fruendt,
Brandon Holtz, etc....that if they aim too high, they never play.
I can't say if they still were happy where they were, some were not and transferred.

What I really do not understand about the DSE situation is that he wants to take his time to make a decision. (late April-May for a decision) That thinking is fine if you are in the October-December months of your senior year. But to think that currently is a little dangerous. I strongly believe that someone is giving this kid bad advice.

With the signing of Eastman I would guess DSE isn't the "priority" he once MIGHT have been. NOT that BU doesn't want him...I'm sure they do and would welcome him with open arms. Its just now maybe we can look at some other areas of need or bank it for next year.

DSE's coach doesn't like BU. DSE's family has strong ties to Chuck Buescher. I'm guessing he's getting pulled in two different directions.

And if you do choose K State over BU don't forget the daily degrading and criticism like was done to Matt Roth this year.

I keep hearing this...is this a BU dislike or a JL dislike? Is there documented evidence or is this hearsay...not doubting it just haven't seen or heard of anything negative coming from Brown.

I guess I would just like to know, "the REST of the story."

It reminds me of the Merfeld/Les feud then poof one day he's a BU coach....

I don't think he has anything personal against BU, and he has been to BU games in the past. I think it more a case that he doesn't have any allegiance to BU, so he will try to help his players get to wherever it's best for them to go.

If Kevin Brown doesn't like BU, then why is BU one of the final teams in the picture for DSE and the same could be said for Matt Roth? Just asking out of curiosity.

Its my opinion Coach Brown wants what is best for his players.....

I am not sure I would agree with the thought process of what is the best school.....

Just because its Indiana calling or Kansas State calling....that does not make it the best choice for the player......there are so many things to concider.....

Was talking to someone the other day......Matt Roth gets a nice round of applause for hitting a three at Indy....but here it would be LOUD every time he was open for a shot.....not to mention playing time and family getting to games and...well you know what I am saying :)

I can imagine it's quite an ego boost for any coach to be able to say an IU or KSU, or a Big-10 or Big-12 school has recruited one of his kids. Especially when compared to a local school, or an MVC school, or a BU that does not have the national name recognition.

It's kind of liking dating the hot cheerleader instead of the girl you really like and who you know, deep down, is the one for you :)

I agree Murph. Like Matt was the first local area kid not to choose BU.

I wouldn't blame him one bit if he wants to go out of state to play and experience something different than Peoria, Illinois altough for me that different experience surely would not be frostbite falls.

Further memo to Dyricus...

notice that Northern Iowa is making a big push to land Ahmad Grant, a 6-2 shooting guard from Olney CC who is originally from Richwoods HS.
He is a very similar player to Dyricus, and if UNI lands Ahmad, who averages 16 ppg as a juco soph, and is a couple years more mature and already tested at the college level, then I think Dyricus will have quite a difficult time getting PT at UNI.
Ahmad is visiting UNI in a couple weeks.

Hearsay, and I heard it was a BU thing. But again, hearsay. Don't have any 'inside' info other than what I have heard from people a little more familiar with him than me. FWIW, I think the guy is a really good coach.

If UNI gets Ahmad Grant, don't expect UNI to pursue Dyricus further. I really only see them signing one in the Spring signing period. They may be trying to choose b/t Dyricus and Ahmad. I really don't know. Regardless, UNI plays a two PG offense and so depth chart is not much of a concern as Jake played 8 guys 18+ minutes this year, and 2 additional for around 5-10 min/game. If Dyricus goes to UNI, he will probably be the only Spring signee. That would put him in position to probably split minutes (or take over minutes) with James and Marc Sonnen (RS Freshman and true Freshman). After that year, Farokhmanesh and Haak graduate, opening up more minutes in the future. Jake will continue to go 8-10 deep as he has now built this program to sustain itself for the most part.

Regardless, Dyricus has a great opportunity. To get a college education for free from a high quality Division I institution with the good chance of making the NCAA Tourney. Of course, I'm bias in thinking UNI is a better fit of achieving that...but that's just me. :)

BTW, thanks for the link on Ahmad Grant, tornado.

I know...and if DSE chooses UNI, he will have made a great choice, as no other program in the Valley seems to develop some of their guards any better...
..outside of a few faithful here and your fans & coaching staff, who had ever heard of Ben Jacobson, Kwadzo, John Little, Johny Moran, and Farokhmanesh
