It early to be talking about RPI numbers. But I just looked at the RPI ranking after games on Thursday, and the #1 RPI team in the country will be playing Bradley soon.
No, it's not SEMO (RPI #248 ) or Michigan State (RPI #33), but Wright State is ranked #1 overall in RPI.--

The top MVC team surprisingly is Drake at #15--

Despite the apparent "down year" for the MVC, they remain the #5 ranked conference. The Big Ten is #7--

Wright State plays Butler just before they play us? Is it normal for a conference game to be in the middle of their non-conf. schedule?

Some conferences have a game scheduled early like this. I think the Colonial just had one last night. And didn't ISU play someone early last year or a couple years ago.

EDIT: Here's the info-

George Mason played Drexel last night in the Colonial.

Last year, ISU played Evansville on 12/9 then had 3 more Non-Con games.

Sagarin is soooo much better than Ken Pom or anybody else's RPI early in the season. We argue about this every year. The fact of the matter is we do not know the method used by the selection commitee. Their method is kept secret, but they have stated they do use Sagarin. Just how much nobody knows. We do know for football the BCS uses Sagarin and how much it is used and it does not use Ken Pom.

BCS standings and selection method.

Anyway, Sagarin has BU ahead of Wright State, 80 vs 109 and I think that is about right. Sagarin's top 10:

North Carolina
Duke
UCLA
Kansas
Memphis
Texas
Georgetown
Wisconsin
Louisville
Texas A&M

Didn't George Mason clobber Drexel last night by like 40 pts?

The only thing I don't like about Sagaqrin's at this time of the year is that it is based on the past year's stats up until a certain point. So until we get to the point where everyone is "connected", I pass on the Sagarin's info.

I say that is a good thing. Each team has many returning players and returning coaches. And teams DO repeat their history. If you thing Wright State should be number 1 and higher than North Carolina so be it, but I'll stick with Sagarin.

I should have stated this is my earlier reply to you. Sagarin only PARTIALLY uses last year's stats. It COMBINES last year AND this year until the teams are "connected".

Mike - you are absolutely right on all accounts. RPI and Sagarin's are both better as time goes on. I don't put any stock really in either until later.

I suppose I turn my head on Sagarin's until "connected" because using last year's info is kinda like Digger and Packer saying we need to select team's to the NCAA based on their performance on getting to the Sweet16 in the last 5 years. Since I can't stand that kinda bias, I don't like seeing it in a rating.

Now... RPI used to not make sense or matter until February. But IMO it is a little sooner than that now since the season starts sooner and teams get to play more games in a season and teams are allowed to play in more in-season tourneys (instead of just 1 every 4 years).

The whole thing about the RPI (IMO), was the committee invented it so they could justify taking 7 B10 teams and only 1 MVC. But now that the MVC has cheated the formula, seems like they (the Packers and Diggers)don't understand the formula and want it dropped.

Anyway... I do like both stats late in the year.

Who are these Digger and Packer you reference?

Couple of CrackPiped-MouthPieces in the Drive-By Media. LOL!

Here's something for ya... not sure if Sagarin has this info...

So far, Conference records against BCS Conferences.... the only ones at .500 or above:

ACC 17-7
MVC 6-4
PAC10 7-5
B12 8-8
Hor 5-5

The rest have losing records so far against BCS Conferences. (I know - it is early... just stating the facts up to this point)

Sagarin's conference ratings.

Here are the current Sagarin ratings for Bradley opponents:

Non-conference
141 - Illinois-Chicago (L, 75-84)
157 - Iowa State (W, 65-56)
328 - Maryland-Eastern Shore (W, 98-71)
327 - Florida Gulf Coast (W, 82-74)
145 - Iowa (W, 67-56)
22 - Vanderbilt (L, 86-95)
186 - Loyola-Chicago (W, 64-47)
263 - Southeast Missouri State
12 - Michigan State
109 - Wright State
14 - Butler
97 - VCU

Missouri Valley
34 - Southern Illinois
35 - Missouri State
39 - Creighton
56 - Northern Iowa
80 - Bradley
82 - Drake
90 - Wichita State
106 - Illinois State
175 - Indiana State
191 - Evansville

I know it's early, but this is just a way to compare teams early in the season. This also seems to confirm my thought that in order to "erase" the loss to UIC, we'll need to win at least one game against Michigan State/Butler and both games against Wright State and VCU.

The lofty RPI for Wright State didn't last long. In another hit for the MVC and for Bradley's RPI, Wright State lost last night at Marist. Their RPI fell from #1 to #49.--

Here are the current Sagarin ratings for Bradley opponents:

Non-conference
136 - Illinois-Chicago (L, 75-84)
144 - Iowa State (W, 65-56)
330 - Maryland-Eastern Shore (W, 98-71)
314 - Florida Gulf Coast (W, 82-74)
142 - Iowa (W, 67-56)
22 - Vanderbilt (L, 86-95)
205 - Loyola-Chicago (W, 64-47)
257 - Southeast Missouri State (W, 90-72)
15 - Michigan State (L, 61-66)
139 - Wright State
13 - Butler
76 - VCU

Missouri Valley
32 - Creighton
46 - Southern Illinois
56 - Drake
57 - Missouri State
77 - Bradley
86 - Northern Iowa
103 - Wichita State
106 - Illinois State
157 - Indiana State
195 - Evansville

I still say we need to win these next three games in order to "erase" the loss to Illinois-Chicago. It would also add a great deal of momentum heading into the conference season.

There's no erasing on a resume ... all that matters is quality wins (Bradley has zero), overall wins (considering the lack of quality wins, would probably need 24 wins overall to get an at-large bid), how you finish and minimizing the bad losses ...

The Butler win would be something that the selection committee would look at very favorably.

If you remember the Sweet 16 year, a big reason we made it is because we won 7 of our last 8 and took down a Top 25 team on their senior night (UNI).

We will have our chance to do the same thing this year, with a challenging finish including two versus Creighton and possibly a conference title-deciding game with SIU.

Everyone knows that we're going to have to finish in the top two of conference to even have a chance at an at-large.
