ESPN apologizes for map blunder

According to this article today (12/8 ) in the PJ Star, a person at ESPN described as a "spokeman" has issued an apology for their map blunder on SportsCenter after the BU-Michigan State game last Tuesday. Mislabeling Peoria as being is Indiana is the only thing Josh Krulewitz was apparently authorized to apologize for. ESPN feels the other far more insulting remarks their people made were justifed.

For the record, a search for Josh Krulewitz reveals he is a Vice President of Media Relations at ESPN, meaning it's his duty as a PR guy to put a nice spin on things that would otherwise be embarrasing to ESPN.
The instances where Krulewitz's name shows up in print include the ESPN explanations of why they let Michael Irvin go (after he made racially insensitive remarks, and amid drug related arrests) and why Harold Reynolds was abruptly fired (supposed sexual harassment).
 
The banter between the commentators included such witty things as the BU-MSU game being the biggest thing to
happen in Peoria in a decade, and snooty remarks about this being the biggest thing since the Arena Football title
in 2000 and Peoria getting its 2nd Super Wal-Mart.

This Wal-Mart comment is somewhat akin to racism, since I am confident that what was meant was that the
average Peorian is uneducated, has a low paying job, and is likely to do much or most of their shopping at places
like Wal-mart since they'd be incapable of affording anything else.

I reminds one of Mike Royko's frequent attacks on downstate people as if all were uneducated hillbillies with
overalls and a stem of grass sticking out of their mouths.

Unfortunately, ESPN's spokesperson stated another glaring inaccuracy in the apology when Krulewitz said, "our expertise is in sports and not geography."

Now ESPN will be forced to issue another apology for the misrepresentation of ESPN's sports expertise. ;-)
 
Not sure what everyone expected here....we treated this game like it was a once in a lifetime experience. After going to the luncheon and through the extra long intro at the game.....we promoted it as such.....nobody but us remembers what ESPN said about Peoria a few days ago
 
I think ESPN and everyone is missing the point here. Lefty is on to it. Yes - we made it a once in a lifetime event. Because it was. And it is true - it was the biggest thing in Peoria in 45 years for Bradley.

So ESPN likes to ridicule that and spin it like Peorians and Bradley are a bunch of backwoods folk who just got running water last year.

But really... they missed the true story.

It was the biggest thing... because teams ranked in (or hoping to be ranked anywhere near) the Top 25 won't go to Peoria and Bradley. FOR A REASON!!!

And that reason is the REAL STORY!

So the typical "drive-by media" thing to do is to try discredit the town, its people, and school aided by mistating facts and taking low-blow pot shots.

And then think they will do a 'breaking news' story of an apology?

Forgeddaboudit.
 
I disagree heartily.....the fans were asked to exhibit the same kind of enthusiasm
as they did in certain situations in the past, such as the games up in Michigan in the NCAA.
Nobody ever said this was a once in a lifetime game....there have been others, and will be in the future.

Such as games up in Michigan.... winning their way to the Sweet 16... for the 1st time in like 50 years.

But that's not my point T.

Teams like Mich St this season don't come to Bradley for a reason... and most BCS fans will silently admit it... they will say it is because it is only a big game for Bradley. Which is Bee-S! It is a BIG game for Mich St - and they knew it. They could go off and play E Michigan or Loyola and get "adda-boys" from the drive-by media for going on the road. But when they go play at Bradley... you hear how it is the biggest thing in town since the frickin light bulb around here. That's because Bradley and MVC teams are BETTER than the E Mich's or Loyola's on a year-in year-out basis and the drive-by media is in denial on the MVC teams. So all we hear is low-blow slams and ridicule and lame apologies.
 
I quit paying attention to ESPN a few years ago. Box scores, message boards, and newspapers are a much better source of sports information and opinion these days. I would suggest that anyone who wants a wholistic view of today's sporting world get their information from places other than the agenda-driven mouthpieces at ESPN.

Nobody said it T but we don't treat other games like this...so in effect we made it seem like a once in a lifetime exprience...that's all

Yep I don't ever watch the station unless there's a game I really want to see. One of the last times I had it on when I was staying at a hotel they had this "ESPN Weekend" thing where they were filming at DisneyWorld and they had long shots of popular athletes riding the roller coasters and talking to Mickey Mouse and stuff. If I wanted to watch a commercial for the Disney Corporation I think I would go ahead and swallow some drain cleaner so people are shocked when this piece of garbage media outlet is biased or has crappy coverage or makes crude jokes at Peoria's expense?

I kind of understand the attachment. It was a pioneer in its field and and at one time a revelation for sports fans....never been an all sports channel before...but my friends those days are long gone so my advice would be to not hold your breath for an apology and just turn the stupid thing off.
 
The IU-UMBC was on ESPN3 but they must have had some uninformed announcers doing the game as a lot of IU fans are discussing their mistakes.

One similar and funny discussion over on the Indiana board about a repeated geography mistake that the ESPN announcers kept making while broadcasting the Indiana game last night..

We all know Matt Roth is friom Washington, IL - and Cody Zeller is from a town named Washington, IN, but they are, obviously, in completely different states.

BUT -- never mind that - the announcers ..
"...kept speaking of Roth being from the same home town as Zeller. But, different High Schools (cross town rivals)..."

The announcers also kept saying it was Matt Roth's birthday - but that was another mistake - it is not his birthday --
last night was Matt's teammate Daniel Moore's birthday..
