Final decision--> No Mascot

Hallelujah.

What did we need a mascot for anyway? Does a mascot really add anything to games? I'm plenty entertained by BU hoops already!

a missed opportunity,imo.

Perhaps, but with the collection of crap they came up with, this was the best decision. Now, if the logo can be redesigned to a much more marketable style, we will be in business. The 'BU Braves' script logo has run its course.

Understand that by doing nothing, the issue still lingers and will surface every 2-3 years until we do something. So for those who consider this a victory, I don't want to hear bitching and moaning the next time this issue arises.

The NCAA gave us a reprieve, but I think they made it clear they wanted us to do something proactive.

I think adopting a mascot at any time would be a waste. They're extremely overdone and only serve a purpose for marketing purposes (which shouldn't be the point of having one). Redesign the logo, that's fine but if we can't have a tomahawk-carrying "Native American" I don't see why we'd have any mascot at all.

If you put a good product on the court year in and year out, you will garner intrest in your program. Frankly, I think Bradley needs to do a MUCH better job of marketing in the Chicago area. I would be making a safe guess that more people come from there than Peoria, St. Louis or elsewhere. Yet living up here, it is like Bradley doesn't exist usually. How's about we get Bradley apparel into stores outside of the Peoria area? You're telling me we can't sign some sort of deal with Sports Authority, SportsMart or whoever? Maybe I don't understand the "business" end of this as well as some, but Bradley really should be making a concerted effort to garner exposure in the biggest market near them.

And....we don't need a mascot to do that.

GOOD! I think this was the best thing to do given the ideas that they had narrowed down to as finalists. IMO, the clock mascot winning would have signaled the end of life on Earth.

LOL!!!!!

I actually had a conversation with a teacher from Bradley that thought the Clock was the best. What a Knot-Head.

I am glad about this decision.

Now let's leave it alone.

We are BRADLEY!

(whether we have an Indian or a Squirrel or a Clock running around on the floor and on the front of hats and t-shirts - WHO CARES!... only the ones out to force a political issue and make a mockery of the institution... well, you won, but you also lost)

This is the other reason why this is stupid. You can't market or sell something that's generic and hope to make a profit.

Chicago is a tough market to crack into anyways, because it is a pro sports market first. So you need to be above and beyond billions to make a dent.

Even Bergners in Peoria drastically cut back its Bradley gear this year.

Don't you see though, this only prolongs the inevitable? This issue won't go away. It is not a victory in any way. It is another failure.

We'll start the process all over again at the end of next year.

The object should have been to get off of the watch list. This only endangers our status with the NCAA.

So if that's what you want, then hooray for you.

I agree! at first i wanted a mascot but they all don't really make sense w/ the name. lets market a winning program at a fine instiution of higher learning. winning will sell itself, and hopefully its coming back to the hilltop.

BU does need to get in the chicago market, you see plenty of NIU, Uof I, stuff up here. i understand U of I is a bigger school and has had sucess w/ basketball of late, but once they start losing again, fanfare won't be as rabid.(the bandwagoners have already put away their Illinois shirts) never understood why peoria has so much illini stuff yet little braves merchandise.
btw sportmarts are all sports authority(i used to work as a tech at one. what ever happened to "sportmarty"? )

:D

Squirrel -

1) It is hard to market or sell for a bad product. (winning teams sell tickets and gear - not mascots)

2) I thought we were off the list. (we have had a generic logo with no mascot for a while to support the generic blanketing of the term Braves)

No it doesn't. The watch list is a 5 year deal, and part of the agreement to get off the 'hostile and abusive' list was changing the name of the Chiefs' Club to the Braves' Club. With North Dakota's pending lawsuit against the NCAA, the entire 'hostile and abusive' list could go away altogether. We are always going to be the Braves.

We are on a "watch list" and they made it clear we needed to be proactive. The status quo does nothing to help us.

And I can argue against point 1 all day long. It is hard to market and sell a generic product. I know mascots are not the only thing that sells. BUT they can help you stand out.

Take a look at the college basketball 2007 game by 2K sports. Two of the unlockables are the Wichita and Indiana St mascots. Not the most popular by any means, but invaluable recognition.

It does. They made it clear they wanted us to continue to be proactive.

The proactive action was changing the name of the Chiefs Club. It's over and done with.

I don't think it is. Time will tell. The only way I see it ending is if there was a completely different visual symbol.

Am I the only person that doesn't really care? As long as we keep the name the braves I really don't mind getting a mascot, but I don't particularly desire one either. I'm gonna go to games either way...
