Final score- Bradley 85 Murray State 83

The officiating has been a growing issue over the last few years, but this year, in particular is really ruining the game in my opinion. I do not buy season tickets to watch referees stop the game every 60 seconds and have 50 points scored by free throws. If that is what we’re going to be given, just play horse and we can all just stay home.
All that being said, even with all the garbage whistles, winning on the last second shot in OT was still really exciting. Got to enjoy that shot with Dub, LB, and his son. Great memory that we’ll have forever.

Have to agree with posts about officiating. How in the world can there be such a difference in free throws between Bradley and their opponents. Wardle cannot criticize the officials for will get warnings from the higher ups. So what is the only option for him to voice his opinions on the matter. As for Johnson starting over Deen that may be a stretch in my opinion. Both Johnson and Deen pretty much play equal minutes and a lot of times play at the same time. Do not understand for the life of me why we have bad stretches at the start of each half sometimes. Glad we came away with the win, but we have to play with greater intensity if we are to win in St. Louis. Wardle and staff realize what we need for next year, but that is for another time to discuss. Hope the team can stay focused for these last two games and going into St. Louis.

WGN News had highlights of the game last night. One of Deens long distance 3’s and Hannah’s winning shot were shown. Good PR for Bradley.

Zeke is not lazy or he would not be playing for BW. I agree with everyone about the officiating it's very inconsistent and poor but our team puts itself in bad position with bad angles and we are very handsy defensively.Proper defense is playing physical but using the correct angle to not cut player you are guarding off too early which results in a foul. Almar is perfect example of that. We now have a reputation as being a foul prone team and officials are looking for it. It's going to be hard to win 3 games in St. Louis if we send teams to the line that much. BW said something along those lines after the game

Here is the final play of overtime - https://youtu.be/HHsSIVKzT6A

This ending sequence was the epitome of Brian Wardle as a coach. Not enough trust in his absolutely on fire senior pg to make the right decision in a transition opportunity. But then draws up a brilliant play out of the huddle for a shot that would go in 90% of the time. Coach is a control freak perfectionist but he’s great at what he does. Kudos to Hannah for finishing too.

I don’t believe Zek is lazy at all. His style of play is pretty smooth and I think sometimes it looks that way. IMO

This was talked about in another game thread, but whether you want to use the word “lazy” or unfocused might fit better, he definitely does have that at times. Just watch him on rebounds where he doesn’t jump or box out, off-ball defense where he gets caught flat footed or slow on rotations. Combined that with passes picked off a lot and what would you call that? It is certainly worse when he’s not scoring in my opinion, but he’s not the most focused player regardless of how smooth he looks. I mean a 6’6” strong athletic player should be able to be your best defender right? He clearly isn’t. Davis and even Deen get prime defensive assignments before Zek does.

In terms of the fact that Brian still plays him…ya he’s our most talented scorer and a senior. Also, the only possible replacement is Burch and he is still struggling staying focused on defense at times as well, as isn’t yet consistent or turnover free on offense himself. So he has no choice but to play him. But notice he did sub him out for Johnson/Jonovic on defense a couple times the end of the game yesterday.

Feels like this team has the talent to be ranked, but they just can never put it together for a full game at a time. This leads to frustrating losses and close calls against mediocre teams that feel like BU should never lose to.

I think it’s more roster construction than talent. The last couple years we had no guard depth, which cost us. This year we mostly filled the guard depth, but we have a few holes which weren’t filled from last year - strong defenders (Leons, Hick), a taller ball handler (Hick), and rebounding (Leons). We essentially replaced those two with Zek and a bunch of role players and left a couple scholarships for end of bench guys. We really bet big on Atlason and Burch showing growth from last year and neither seemingly has, at least consistently. Think of the lineup from that regular season conference champion (Mast, Leons, Zek, Hick, Deen with Henry, Hannah, Ville, Davis on the bench). and that team still couldn’t become a top 50 team and couldn’t beat Drake or come close in Arch Madness. We didn’t have enough shooting or guard depth despite the overwhelming talent of that lineup. This year we can shoot, but turn the ball over and don’t defend or rebound consistently.

People get on Brian’s in game coaching, but I think he’s actually pretty good at adjusting (we certainly come back a lot), and he’s draws up good plays a lot. Our offensive system could run more sets, but overall pretty good to me. The subbing is erratic at times, but who are we really clamoring should get more consistent minutes? Maybe Burch?

Overall Brian is a really good coach. He develops players well.

I think his biggest problem and the one thing holding us back from the next level is roster construction. We needed a taller combo guard to take the pressure of Deen and give teams a different look (Hick’s role), and we needed a strong post guy who could bang a little down low and rebound. We filled those roles with Zek and Thomas. Zek’s a talented player, but he should not be the third point guard on a championship team, and defense is not his thing. Thomas has talent and is still probably our most talented five man, but he plays on the perimeter a lot and despite being a solid rebounder is not what I would call a banger down low. Then for depth we added Timo, Biliew, Dillon, and Linke/Hartdke. We’ve been incredibly lucky injury wise for a few seasons now. I wish Jim Les had had that injury luck. But that shows all the more that the sum of our parts never seems to equal the whole. When I look at that 22-23 team, I can’t believe that roster wasn’t top 50. But it’s not just about talent, it’s also about how all the pieces fit together. Atlason is a prime example - he’s played out of positions for two years now because we haven’t had a true five and the four spot has been taken. Again, I love that Brian is our coach, and I still think we’re good, but if we’re looking at getting to the next level, that’s what I think he needs to look at. Not easy for a mid-major I know, but clearly he can land talent and develop players. And I hope in a couple weeks we are dancing and none of these struggles matter. But I still want to be Drake at some point.

I largely agree with you except as much as I like him I don’t know where to play Al. He has trouble guarding a 5-I agree but most 4’s will drive right past him.

Almar is just not physical enough to play against a big and hasn't learned how to move his feet quick enough to play against a perimeter player. However you can put him on the wing in a zone defense. Offensively in 6 of our first 9 games he was in double figures. In all of the games since January 1, other than the one exceptional game against Belmont where he scored 28 on 11-15 shooting, he's 16-47. I've constantly heard he's our best shooter in practice. Not sure why it's not been translating in games.

No doubt buddy! A memory for a lifetime with you and Dub! Thanks a million!

AGREED! Zek gets a bad rap for his demeanor, but he does give close to max effort every game. He does though, commit 1-2 head-scratching turnovers every other game and that's maybe a mental lapse.
So glad we have Zek back, and while I expected a tad more production this season, it's been a good one and he's been a key part of our success.

Almar needs 4 or more shots per game to see how good of a shooter he is. It seems when he gets more opportunities, his % is higher for the game. Get him in a rhythm, but he's kinda slow to get open, which wasn't the case earlier in the season, and lately seems to be playing in the paint more.

I also agree, Zek has never been lazy or lacking effort. He is such a "cool, calm, collected" presence that it gets mistaken for laziness. Sometimes even in clutch seconds he's almost TOO calm and a high energy defender takes it from him off the dribble. I think a small coaching tweak saying "match the energy of your defender" would do him good.
There have been many games this year where Duke just can't find an open shot and it slows our offense way down. Zek is the only guy on this team that can consistently create his own shot at will. (Burch isn't there yet) He has no problem putting the team on his back in those times and no moment is too big.

also, I think BW calling the timeout in OT was the right call. He was calling it from the moment Duke crossed half court...refs just didn't see him. Three dribbles later as Duke is jumping it gets granted. ...1 timeout left with 5 seconds remaining in OT, ball in our half-court, I'm calling timeout 10/10 times. BW has shown countless times he can draw up the right play out of a timeout and he trusts his team to execute.
A couple years ago in Zek's first stint, BW gave sophomore Zek the ball in those last shot scenarios and it didn't always work out, for reasons I mentioned above. Now he's going to Duke and Darius more and it's working pretty well.

I think Almar is playing out of position but because of necessity he has to play down low. Hopefully they can get a strong center and then move Almar outside more

I know I have said this before on here, but I would recommend you single him and watch him for awhile in a game. He is only max effort when he is scoring. I like Zek, and think he could be possibly the best player on our team, but he does not have a high motor. If he did he would be 1st team All Valley.
