Must get back after it. Put the Drake game behind us and go beat a UNI team that we are much better than on the road! Go Braves!

If we can't win this game, we deserve to play on Thursday.

Let's not panic too much yet. The longest losing streak this team has had this season is 2. I'll be a little more concerned if are shooting is as ice cold as it was against Drake and our defense is one step behind, kinda of like it was against Drake. Hopefully that was a 1 game aberration.

The Northern Iowa "beat reporter" for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier....
suddenly and admittedly "bitterly" announces he is no longer going to cover any UNI games

no explanation given..

That is really quite strange. He just took over the beat for UNI this season.
If you read his twitter feed, he admits he is a little bitter about this-

>>So I suppose I should announce that I won't be covering the UNI game tomorrow.
I also won't be covering any other UNI games throughout the rest of human existence.

>>I'm still a bit too bitter to properly thank the cool people who supported me in my short time here, but it was appreciated. Hopefully I can express those feelings with adequate kindness if/when my mood improves.

>>I hope it goes without saying, but I'm sincerely appreciative of everyone who dropped me a line this afternoon. Here's hoping we can one day interact again under better circumstances.

>>Also, thanks for not immediately unfollowing me. An alarming number of people did so.

Nothing in his tweets prior to today suggested he might be leaving the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier or abandoning the UNI beat coverage.
In fact, early today, he posted this last report about UNI-
http://wcfcourier.com/sports/colleg...cle_81a8c407-3a3c-5bc4-beaa-ee76ef1248b6.html

His tweets today suggest he was terminated by the newspaper, so it must have been sudden and unexpected.
There are rumors he was not well liked by the Northern Iowa coaches or players and they wanted him off the beat.

He wasn't just taken off "the beat" by the WCF Courier- apparently he was fired and doesn't work for them at all...
the comments from a few fans seem to say he was not a popular beat reporter either with the fans or with the UNI coaching staff as he was apparently quite negative .....so maybe they are all looking for a convenient scapegoat for their really bad year at UNI

I just read all of his columns lately and I don't think he's anywhere near as negative as I have seen elsewhere in the MVC...

as for the negative part - the fans on their message board are doing a pretty good job ripping up their own staff & players.
UNI doesn't always have the greatest athletes, but they always overcompensated by having good shooters.
This year, however, is the opposite...they're dead last in MVC play in scoring, in FG% and next to last in 3-pt shooting.
Two of their most prolific 3-pt shooters, including the guy who has by far shot the most are hitting 26% or worse.
Their starters attempted only 5 last game, so I wonder if that's their new approach - we'll see.

Hopefully UNI won't zone early after seeing what Drake did to us. If they do, we need to make a concerted effort to get the ball into the middle of the paint with either Donte or Eli and kick to open shooters rather than just passing around the outside of the zone and chucking up NBA 3s. If we can keep them in a man to man most of the game we can dominate them in the paint. This is a must have. There's really no other way to look at it.

I see there is NO pregame article at all about the Bradley-UNI game in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier this morning - I guess they have nobody covering...
wonder what's gonna happen when all the ballots for All-Conference, Player of the Year, & Coach of the Year are due at the end of February?

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier website shows quite a few different sports reporters that cover men's and women's college sports at Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI, and other colleges, and they have extensive coverage of girls and boys high school sports. Considering they are a much smaller newspaper, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier coverage of college and especially prep sports puts the PJ Star to shame.

I suspect the Waterloo-Cedar Falls newspaper will shift one of their other college or prep reporters over to cover UNI, or they may hire someone new.
Here are a couple possible candidates and there are others-
Jim Nelson- he covers UNI football, some UNI women's sports, college wrestling, and other sports like USHL hockey, as well as some prep coverage-
https://twitter.com/Nelley13
https://wcfcourier.com/users/profile/jim nelson/
Nick Petaros- covers lots of prep sports, UNI women's basketball,
https://twitter.com/NickatCourier
https://wcfcourier.com/users/profile/nick petaros/
Rod Payne- various high school sports
https://wcfcourier.com/users/profile/rod payne/
Doug Newhoff- sports editor, and covers some local college and high school sports
https://wcfcourier.com/users/profile/doug newhoff/

Also, UNI basketball gets coverage from a couple other newspapers-

The Cedar Rapids Gazette has a sports reporter named Cole Bair who follows UNI basketball-
http://www.thegazette.com/subject/s...stency-on-defense-20180206?utm_source=dlvr.it
https://twitter.com/realColeBair

And the Des Moines Register also covers UNI basketball pretty well.
Their UNI beat reporter is Dargan Southard-

https://twitter.com/Dargan_Southard

We actually have a good reference source on Bradleyfans.com for fans to check out what other sports reporters are saying around the MVC, as well as fan message boards for all the other MVC teams, and many other good basketball websites. It is worth remembering or saving.
Check out the links on the forum named "Sports Links", and the topic titled "Quick Links to Sites of Interest and other Message Boards". I just updated it today-

isn't it just inherent in the title "beat reporter" that it is required they have to be AT all home games, and even oughta be there for road games, too...
Guys like Benson & Reynolds do....but I would seriously doubt that the guys from Cedar Rapids & Des Moines who have other schools and other sports to cover as well - actually travel for all the UNI Games.
(just checking his tweets, the Des Moines guy seems to be at least at some home games but not at the road games)
Seems to me that the only guy who would have the claim to "beat reporter" is the home town newspaper guy who is dedicated to following UNI basketball all the time, and it appears that right now they do not have one.

I think there can be more than one "beat" writer. Each newspaper can have someone who is assigned the "beat" to cover UNI basketball. Most newspapers have writers who cover the police "beat". It doesn't mean they have to be present at the police office 24 hours a day or follow them around all day. Beat writing just means someone dedicated to following a particular "beat".
You can call them whatever you want, but that's my term for them, and IMO it fits the definition.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_reporting
https://www.openschoolofjournalism.com/trends-in-journalism/beat-reporting

but seriously - I don't givahoot what your wiki thing says...
maybe you don't know, but it's the MVC that matters here and they determine that the BEAT REPORTER be one of the four VOTES each team has for the post-season ballots
So it is the MVC's designation of who is the beat reporter that has relevance...

They determine that for "All-Conference Team and Players of the Year" the votes come from:
"Four individuals from each institution will cast his/her ballot:
head coach, sports information director, newspaper beat writer
and radio play-by-play."

(per MVC web site)

so I don't think just anyone who wants to claim the title can do so.

What I asked above was:
"....what's gonna happen when all the ballots for All-Conference, Player of the Year, & Coach of the Year are due at the end of February?"
It will have to be the MVC who determines who votes and it isn't gonna be Clay Cunningham and if you say the Des Moines guy, then what about the Cedar Rapids guy - or the BU Scout guy?

Darrell Brown not starting.

The announcers are already talking about how "It's been a long time since Bradley played a meaningful game in February". They must have gotten talking points from the PJ Star people.
Seriously, that fact has way more to do with the fact that teams like Creighton or Wichita State usually were running away with the conference in past years, but are gone now, and way less to do with Bradley's record this year.

back to bad habits- missed FTs, poor outside shooting, and passes that hit guys in the hands but are not caught

plus some mighty horrible calls - esp on that one where Haldeman slipped then ref calls a foul
