Fox to create new sports network

Oh great. Now we will get FoxSports1 and ESPN engaged in a spending war for rights as they both approach $10/month each in carriage fees.. (Because you know if ESPN loses a sport, they will not reduce their fees..)

The Fox network will be wildly successful if they do one thing different than ESPN- cater to the other 90% of sports fans who do not live in New York City or Boston.

Excellent point! They don't call ESPN the "Eastern Seaboard Programming Network" for nothing! :D

I don't disagree one bit. It would be the opposite direction of their sports radio channel on XM though, outside of Dan Patrick, every host they have seems to have a THICK east coast accent and is almost openly biased towards NE teams...

If they really want to get outside the box they will rely heavily, if not exclusively, on delivering their product over the internet vs. cable/satellite. Basically become ESPN3 with much less of an emphasis on the rest of the ESPN.

Watching the Fox Network baseball game this afternoon, I notice they are heavily promoting their new all-sports network Fox Sports 1 that will debut August 17.-

along with the new sports network by NBC and CBS, I think sports fans will welcome a the new all-sports national networks that will give broader and better sports coverage. ESPN has gotten too full of themselves with their coverage of only a few selected sports, and their features, and their tendency to ignore most teams west of New York and Boston.

because they will have to compete - ESPN has kinda acted like they don't care because they are basically the only national sports channel

Just being Fox will make it better. As for ESPN, I'm glad they are around because we get more sports and don't have to watch the trash on regular TV, but when they came along it started the demise of basketball programs like Bradley.
I've actually wondered if more competition to ESPN could actually benefit a conference like the MVC. If ESPN, Fox, NBC and CBS are all looking for sports programming, it could eventually lead to better deals and exposure for us and others. The key to that would be to maintain our spot within the Top 10 conferences and make some noise in March. Would that be enough to lead to us benefitting? I don't know. But if a battle for content develops, we could find ourselves, along with the A10 and WCC as being beneficial to someone needing more product.

And then again, I could be completely wrong.

I agree. When ESPN first started they mostly covered East Coast teams, some of who never were basketball powers. I was in the service, stationed in the Washington D.C. area in the pre ESPN days. We used to go watch Georgetown and George Washington play each other in Ft. Myer's little military post gym. ESPN turned their programs around.

if we really want the St. Louis market - we need to add Saint Louis Univ. or SIUE..
SLU could have been a really great replacement for Creighton had it been workable...
It still could happen at some time down the road - as the A-10 is in a little decline with the recent loss of four of their top members, Xavier, Temple, Butler, Charlotte..
if the football playing members (Davidson, Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, UMass, URI, Richmond) choose to go elsewhere - Saint Louis may yet be looking for a new home,
and a basketball/soccer centered conference like the MVC might still be attractive...

I agree. St. Louis would be a great pick to rejoin the Valley. I dont know why they would not want to rejoin the Valley. Travel expenses would be cut quite a bit

FoxSports1, the new Fox cable sports network that is designed to compete with ESPN, has been on the cable for several days, so what is everyone's thoughts?

I was willing to give it a try for sports news, since, like most people away from the east coast, I dislike ESPN's heavy focus on New York and Boston teams. And I like that FoxSports1 does spend significantly more time covering and showing highlights from games other than the Red Sox & Yankees.

But so far, there are a couple things about FoxSports1 that I find really annoying. I guess they must be trying to target the generation X'ers and Y's, but what is with all the people in baggy jeans, wrinkled shirts, and the no-tie look? And instead of just reporting sports news, every sports anchor and analyst there seems to think they need to invent a unique persona and performance as they give the news. There are too many ex-athletes, and some of them don't speak English well and are hard to understand.
Also, there is way too much of the "inside joke" and playful banter between personalities- just give me the news. And, they are too immersed in self promotion. The majority of the ads throughout the day are for themselves, or some other Fox sports program.
And finally, any network that thinks we want to see almost-82 year old Regis Philbin host a sports program and brag incessantly about Notre Dame loses a lot of credibility.

So maybe ESPN wasn't so bad after all.

I have enjoyed their premier show "Fox Sports Live", their nightly highlight show. The combo of McNabb, Roddick, and Gary Payton have been okay so far and are growing on me. The only problem I have so far is, other then FSL, they really only show racing and UFC, neither of which I am into. This will change during CFB and CBB seasons as they will have alot of those on live, as well as amped up NFL programming. Is the MLB and NBA seasons that will have a major void in live sports that interest me.

I watch MLB Network for my baseball news. I now watch FSL for my pre-bed highlights show.

So far so good for me... always room to improve though

Are NBCSN and CBSS doing any good? I never watch them and its seems like a failed attempt at a new ESPN...

isn't that what this is with Fox...wonder how they will do.

it is actually pretty hard to accomplish the real key in broadcasting success............
"give the people what they want"...because in sports there are so many widely varying tastes...

ESPN includes a bunch of auto racing and professional poker - but I know a ton of people who hate that stuff and wouldn't watch a minute of it....
I think ESPN has largely failed to put good thinking into their programming - they seem to have elite execs who decide on the programming who must never have been outside of Boston or New York...
Also - there's a lot of rabid soccer fans yet very little soccer on their networks.

When the Stanley Cup Finals were so incredibly popular - NBC scored a little success but made the boneheaded move of putting numerous games on their premium cable network that so few people actually had access to.

Agree, but I also don't have any interest in all the Nascar and Ultimate fighting stuff they cover. If they don't learn and tone back that coverage, they'll never get as successful as they want.
