A great night for my parents: mom went to Bradley and Dad went to VMI. He was student manager of the basketball team at the Institute more than 45 years ago, when their biggest rival was West Virginia and Jerry West. Tonight's win is the biggest win for the Keydets since they made it to the Elite Eight in 1976 (they haven't been to the tourney since 76-77).

He's on the phone to as many of his Brother Rats as he can dial tonight!

Congrats to the Braves on tonight's win. This team will find a way to lose 12-13 games this year but whoever plays us in the MVC tourney and postseason should watch out because there won't be many teams more athletic at several key spots.

Was Kentucky suppose to be good this yr? Normally they field a good team but that one is a stunner. I'll take losing to an exhibition to a division 3 team than losing that one. Also, I know MO State was going to be average this yr but could they be this bad or is Auburn just good?

The Kentucky Rivals site is the busiest college message board in the country--
http://kentucky.rivals.com/forum.asp

The number of people online is actualy down a little from their usual traffic tonight (only around 4000 right now! :-o). , probably because some fans are too depressed to look at the board. It's not unusual for that board to have over 10,000 people online after a big game, and their record is 19,773 on April 5, 2007 just after it was announced that UK hired Billy Gillispie.

The VMI loss probably should be laid on Gillespie for allowing the Cats to play VMI's style, because the Keydets generally struggle in the half-court, match up environment (a BU-VMI game would be an interesting contrast/match of styles). Bottom line: Kentucky basically played right into VMI's hands.

The Keydets changed from a Princeton-like style last preseason when three of their best players were booted for honor code violations and Coach Baucom realized they needed to get radical if they wanted to have any chance for success. The results have been pretty good, particularly by VMI basketball standards:

1. Back-to-back 14-win seasons for the first time in 30 years (that's not a misprint)
2. Reggie Williams (now departed) led the nation in scoring for each of the past two seasons
3. For the first time anyone affiliated with VMI can recall, recruits are actually reaching out to VMI, instead of VMI having to settle for the bottom of the barrel e.g. Keith Gabriel, who scored 20 points last night at Kentucky in his first college game (!) probably wouldn't have been interested in the Keydets prior to their change of style.

While is probably more than anyone on this board cared to hear about VMI basketball, I gotta shout about it somewhere and may as well do so on the best hoops board around!!!
