Gary Williams is getting schooled

Da Coach

Just watching the NIT game with the Manhattan Jaspers (of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Assn) AT Maryland. Remember, loudmouth Gary Williams was complaining to the media about how the midmajors like the MVC were not in Maryland's class, and they couldn't compete in the ACC.

Well, the great Maryland Terrapins are struggling with the Manhattan Jaspers. Maryland is losing 63-51 with about 12 minutes left in the game.

Go Jaspers!

It's now turned into a dogfight. Manhattan has missed the front end of 3 one-and-one's. They lead 82-79 with less than a minute to play. One of the coaches (Williams or Gonzalez--don't know who) was picked up on the courtside mike saying, "We outplayed 'em, let the kids decide the game!!".

Manhattan missed every chance to put it away, but in the end Maryland did not make enough shots to come back.

Mayland loses at home to Manhattan in the first round of the NIT.

sweet.

For his penance, I would recommend that Gary be forced to bring the Twerps on a barnstorming tour of the MVC.

Ten road games next year.

3 of 5 ACC teams, in NIT gone. Only Clemson and Fla. St. Remain.
FSU struggled at home with Butler.
I wonder how Silly Billy will spin this?

That was not during GW's time. A matter of fact he really has done a good job since then. The program was at an all time low when he took over. Len Bias was probably the best player I've ever watched. When he died it was a very sad day for anyone who loves the sport of b-ball. The 80s were an unusual time when it came to certain drugs.

You know Pete? I can never figure out why Gary Williams coaches. Win, Lose, or Draw, this guy looks like he and his entire family are about to get nuked!
He might be a lot happier being a greeter at " The evil empire!"

Remember, loudmouth Gary Williams was complaining ....

Loudmouth is right.
The guy never, never stops his bitching at 110 decibels.
Even as the teams left the court at the half, Williams stayed and jawed incessantly with one of the refs.

Also Gary Williams is an enormous crybaby
"Angered over being left out of the NCAA tournament, the Terrapins (19-13) initially declined the NIT bid late Sunday night. But coach Gary Williams reversed the decision after speaking with NIT committee chairman C.M. Newton."
(from the same Fox article below)

Obviously they thought they were not only GOOD enough that they should have been in the NCAA ahead of a team like BU, but he also thought he was TOO GOOD for the lowly NIT, even after being told Maryland would be guaranteed THREE HOME GAMES in the NIT (seriously, that's the report.)

""Williams was all set to turn down the NIT bid .....

......(but)...the athletic department had already committed to hosting three rounds of the NIT if the Terps failed to make the NCAA Tournament field. And, as a top-seed in the new-look tournament, the Terps didn't have to play a first-round game until today, giving Caner-Medley some extra rest."

So they were coddled and given special treatment just to stroke poor Gary Williams, and they still wnet out and got pillaged by Manhattan.

Here are a couple reports that I just love:

"If the result of the game hinged solely on talent, Manhattan probably wouldn't have stood a chance of beating Maryland."

Meaning Williams' coaching was the reason Maryland lost this game.

Maryland loses a player, too..........

Why all the hate? A guys something about the MVC..his opinion, and everyone kills the guy. I've never heard anything about Williams before this week and now he's a complete jerk.
I don't know...we seem awfully sensitive.

I still think he's pretty good coach

C'mon, lefty. If a guy like Williams is going to call up the press and take off on the MVC like he did, without any provoking and pretty much without knowing what the heck he was even talking about, then he deserves what he gets. He needs to be a big boy and learn how to take what he dishes out. Look at the stuff he said and tell me he doesn't deserve to called out on how stupid he is..-- Remember, no one asked him this, he just called the press in and ranted hoping it would help his cause getting into the NCAA. --

Well, he is going to get retribution when the teams he was attacking do well and his team tanks it to a low-major at home (Manhattan has an RPI of 87 and zero wins against the top 50 RPI) .

It really seems like there is some cosmic power enforcing the "what goes around, comes around" rule this year.

And if you think the posts here are a little unfair to poor little Gary, you are out of touch. Check out some of the more viscious stuff on other boards like ValleyTalk, The Shocker board, the Missouri State board, and the boards for many other mid-majors. Even the fans of other ACC teams are a lot more mercililess in their attacks than anything I've seen here.

And, finally- Gary Williams challenged the MVC teams to play the ACC teams on a neutral court. Well, Barry Hinson and probably most of the MVC coaches would be glad to do that. In fact, they are willing to give up a home game to play Maryland on Maryland's home court. You wanna bet Mr. Williams backs out of this? The weenie!

I know what you mean. The only time I've seen him smile is when they won it all. The guy wants to win. Any coach who goes and coaches a school where Maryland was and being able to pick your job is all right with me! I'd want him on my team anyday.

He was just trying to get his team in, that's all. I understand your point......but I still like the guy as a coach

I have nothing against Williams, personally.

But is that how you would promote yourself and your business? By tearing down someone else, or by unfairly ripping into your competetion?

I agree but you have to know where he comes from. He is old school, is a fighter and grew up in a very blue collar family from NJ. He'll do what he thinks it takes within the rules to win. I'd be suprised if he ever would B(*&CH about the time his team played as an excuse.

Here is the box score for the Manhattan-Maryland game

One thing notable is the paltry attendance. Only 4,761 in attendance. The Maryland arena appeared almost empty on TV!

Maryland's home arena is the Comcast Center. It holds 17,950 fans. The actual attendance of 4,761 was pretty embarrassing.

I noticed that too. Manhattan could have drawn that many at Draddy Gym. If that's the best a BCS school can do for the NIT, maybe they should pass them over for a smaller school that cares about the sport and the tournament they're playing in. I know it's tough for teams and fans to get jacked up about playing in the NIT, especially when you're expecting bigger things. Maybe Gary Williams didn't want his team in the NIT for that reason. I thought of the Spring Break possibility to explain the empty seats, but it very well could have been apathy at its finest. There seemed to be plenty of good seats at Maples Pavilion when Stanford hosted Virginia earlier this week.
