How desperate are the NY Knicks?

The Knicks are pretty bad. They are 1-9 for the season, their worst start in franchise history, despite one of the highest payrolls in the NBA. But the rumor now is that they are interested in signing Allen Iverson.

Iverson was cut yesterday by the Memphis Grizzlies, who themselves are one of the worst NBA teams. Iverson was disappointed he got only the 1 offer from Memphis when he became a free agent over last summer. He was unhappy at Memphis because he demanded to be a starter, and Memphis used him off the bench. Memphis got fed up and his 1-year contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

The Knicks will get Eddie Curry back from "injury" (it's actually been reported he was just fat and out of shape), and he joins other ex-Bulls castoffs Chris Duhon (the worst starting point guard in the NBA), and Larry Hughes (who the Knicks will probably cut soon despite being on the hook for his massive $12.8 million salary). But this is a team that will be lucky to win a dozen games this year. It could get real ugly for new coach Mike D'Antoni.

That issue will come into play if they sign Iverson. The Knicks are only interested in giving him a contract for this year, so they don't tie up money they may need next year to go after LeBron or DWade. But rumors are that Iverson is hinting that he wants a 2-year deal with the Knicks because he's tired of moving around and feels he has enough leverage to demand a multi-year deal. Though the Knicks are desperate for a scorer, they are not that desperate to jeopardize their chances in the big free agent market next summer. I suspect Iverson will eventually take a one year deal at a relatively low salary just to continue his playing career.

no chance if AI wants a 2-year deal.
the ONLY silver lining for the Knicks are that they have been planning to get a big FA player for the past 4 years!

How mad are you if you're Mike D'antoni? He coulda been a bulls coach!

I think this whole Knicks being horrible is a little by design. They have one of the top both GM's and Coaches in the whole NBA. They have resources beyond nearly every other team in the league.

Iverson needs to wake up and understand he is not who he was in 2002, try to get on a team with a chance to win, conform, come off the bench and contribute. But he wouldnt do that in Denver or Detroit, so I doubt he ever will.

Maybe this is true this year to a degree, and possibly to some degree last year. But that doesn't explain how the Knicks could have been so bad for the last 10 years. Despite the greatest resources, and the largest payrolls, they haven't had a winning team since 2000-2001, and have not won a single playoff game in 10 years. They have made some terrible free agent signings, and heaped huge, long term contracts on some guys who were not team players like Larry Hughes, Jamal Crawford, Eddie Curry, etc.

Yes, everyone, including the Knicks themselves admits they are structuring themselves for next summer's free agent market.
But this can only explain some of the disastrous moves the last couple years. It doesn't explain their ineptitude for the last 2 decades.

By the way- those player options for Eddy Curry and Jared Jeffries really hurt the Knicks. That's over $18 million they are stuck with for next season in dead weight.
And can someone explain how an NBA exec could have given a mediocre and non-descript player like Cuttino Mobley nearly $10 million a year? That's mind-boggling! He is now retired and sitting at home, yet the Knicks are still on the hook for his $9.5 million this year!

I agree the Knicks have not made great decisions but rememeber that the one who gave that away is now sitting in Florida staring down coaches who wont pull starters.

Yes the contracts for Curry and Jeffries are insane but an expiring contract in the Association is gold. Its a huge number to swallow for any organization but someone will, if the Knicks help pay, take one or both those contracts off the Knicks hands let them expire and have huge cap relief.

The Knicks are having to repair a broken organization and it looks to me they simply will take their beatings this season and be able to move on quickly next year. So, I guess bringing in a guy like Iverson is fine but no way will the Knicks give him 2 years unless that 2nd year is a team option.

The Knicks won the battle last night between 2 of the worst teams in the NBA over the NJ Nets. The Knicks are now 3-9 while the Nets are 0-13 and may be headed for one of the all-time worst seasons ever for a non-expansion team. Unfortunately, the Knicks' 2-game winning streak only moves them further away from a high lottery pick.

Here was a funny event at the end of the 1st quarter. Knicks guard Nate Robinson takes an inbound pass with 0.5 seconds left in the first quarter, turns and heaves the ball into the wrong basket. It would have been a 3-pointer, but he obviously knew it wouldn't count because it came just after time expired.
But check out the end of the video clip and see his coach's reaction to his antics. Mike D'Antoni was livid.

Curry needs to get a refund on that $6K he spends a month on the personal chef. He looks like the only personal cooking he gets is from Ronald McDonald.

Here is a column that states that 60% of NBA players go bankrupt within 5 years after their retirement - and that's given many are even paid with deferred salary payments!!
http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...Broke+After+5+Years"&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Classic cases like Latrell Sprewell (13 year NBA career, over $100 million earned) - who filed bankruptcy more than once and had to auction off all his possessions just to "feed his family"..
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/153759

and Derrick Coleman (17 year NBA career, over $100 million earned) - who a recent story says is over $5 million in debt...
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ba...an-is-almost-5-million-in-debt?urn=nba,233379

and the fact that many boxing superstars who have earned hundreds of millions of dollars have filed bankruptcy...

makes you wonder how they can be so bad at managing their money...

Speaking of legal issues for NBA players, the divorce case of Dwyane Wade is quite humorous.
Wade has been involved in a bitter divorce trial with his estranged wife for a couple years. How crazy is Wade's wife? Siovaughn Wade has been dropped by he 9th divorce lawyer in the last 2 years.
http://www.s2smagazine.com/node/2968

She has made some wild claims against Wade during their divorce, and she recently sued actress Gabrielle Union, who Dwyane Wade has supposedly been having an affair with, because they made out in front of Wade's kids, and because Wade gave more expensive Christmas gifts to Union than he did to his own family.
