Ilinois Junior College Wins National Title

The NJCAA Division I and Division II National Championships begin tomorrow...

BUT the Division III National Championships just concluded in Delhi, NY, and
the National Championship was won by Joliet Junior College, from Joliet, IL!
They won the title game 94-82 over Rochester (MN) Community and Technical College, with the Tournament MVP going to Brain Bradley (6-3 SG) of Joliet JC - a native of Lockport...
Most of JJC's players come from right in Joliet or Lockport, and Brian Bradley who averages 23 ppg on the season, also was a prolific 3-point shooter...
going 111-279 on the season (40%).

Actually, I think Bradley recruited Brian Bradley out of Lockport high school, and I am sure they are aware of him at Joliet Junior College. He is probably a bit better than the kids that usually end up at a Division III juco, and probably will end up at a D1 college. But BU would probably be better off with a 4-year kid.
 
Some Missouri Valley recruits are playing in the DI and DII junior college tourneys...

In case anyone wants to know..........

In Division I juco:

--Southeast Iowa lost this morning to NW Florida..
Of course John Wilkins didn't play, but Paris Gulley played 16 min, was 1-3 and has 2 pts, 2 reb.
SICC plays tomorrow in the Consolation Bracket at 3PM

--in the 2nd game Three Rivers beat Monroe 81-69...
Three Rivers' 7-0 center Ehimen Orukpe (signed with Wichita), played 22 min and was 1/4 with a FT for 3 pts & 8 rebs.
TRCC plays tomorrow at 6PM.

--In the game being played currently Middle GA is leading Navarro 29-28 at half..
but Navarro's center, Keithrick Denson, signed to Creighton, has 4 pts, 3 reb.
Ex-NBA'er Paul Pressey's son Matt Pressey has 10 pts, 3 reb.

--In the 8:30PM game tonight, Wallace CC's Mitchell Anderson, Jr. (JJ"s son) will take on Butler CC.


In Division II juco:

--Lincoln College (ISU's signee Kenyon Smith) plays Pima College at 8:30PM
 
I am actually a graduate of Lockport High school and know the bradley family well. Jim Les has been in contact with him during this season and they are holding out hope he will get an offer. A more likely senario is him coming on as a walk-on. He really wants to play div 1 ball and hopefully opened up some eyes this season. Hes a great kid and would be a great addition to the braves. However i dont know if hes really good enough to use a scholorship on considering all the guards we have

Navarro beat Middle GA 66-65 and Creighton signee Keithrick Denson had 4 pts, 4 rebs.

Wallace beat Butler 84-84 with Mitchell Anderson, Jr. going scoreless.

Lincoln College beats Pima 76-69 - no stats yet
 
I will say I went to a Lincoln-ICC game and Lincoln has a big man that is pretty good with his back to the basket and isn't bad face to the basket either... Just needs to get a little bigger muscle wise.. His name is Kiel Turpin and is only a freshman and I know the coach pretty well at lincoln and says he has alot of potential, but with another year there he could be pretty good.... Tonight at nationals he had 23 and 8

Limestone's DeMarius Sumrell had an absolutely great game...
6-11 plus 1-2 from 3-pt, also 6-7 on FTs, 19 pts, 6 rebs, 4 assists..
Kiel Turpin also had a great game 23 pts, 8 rebs.

In yesterday's junior college playoff games......

In Division I
Southeastern Illinois CC loses their 1st Rd game but they don't have any players that have been discussed or are familiar.

Southeast Iowa lost to Monroe 66-59, John Wilkins didn't play but was cheerleader (see pic in link), and Paris Gulley had no points in 8 minutes.

This is two straight losses in the national tourney for SICC, so they are not performing well and I am sure they'd have done better had they had Wilkins available.

Three Rivers beat NW Florida 83-73 to go 2-0 and reach the semis, Wichita State signee Ehimen Orukpe zero points and one rebound.
Three Rivers will face Navarro in one of the two Championship semifinals tomorrow at 6PM.

Chris Roberts' old school, Navarro won to make it to the semi's, beating East Mississippi CC 72-58 with Creighton signee Keithrick Denson getting 6 pts, 6 reb in 31 minutes.

In the D-II Tourney -
Kirkwood beat Waubonsee CC - ex-Evansville Ace Keylon Williams had 5 pts, 8 asst, 5 turnovers 3 rebs for Kirkwood.

Lincoln College plays at 6:30PM tonight


In NCAA Division II National Tournament --
Midwestern State (Rashad Austin's school) beat Central Mo. (Mike Sugg's old school) 60-59
Quincy lost in 3-OT to St. Joe's (IN) 104-103...

Hey - I have a question and maybe some ISU fan can answer...

Kenyon Smith is listed as a freshman at Linclon College, and everything I have read says that he will be a sophomore next year at ISU..even though he was a 2008 Simeon grad and has used one season of eligibility at Lincoln, and was deemed a non-qualifier after he enrolled at ISU in 2008.
If your freshman season is spent as a non-qualifier, then you cannot count that season as a redshirt year, and must appeal for it later....so does that mean Smith may have only TWO years remaining??

Kenyon will have three years of eligibilty. He did not play for Lincoln last year. Im not sure what the exact rule is but I believe it has something to do with as long as he recieves his associates in two years he will have three years. Comparable to a non-qualifier graduating in 4 years gets his missed year back.
 
but his year at Lincoln counts as one year, and if he fails to graduate on time, then his year as a non-qualifier will count as another year of eligibility...
that's the way it was for Daniel Ruffin..and he had to graduate on time in order to get that first year back..
So could it be possible that his "three years of eligibility" will be only if he meets the NCAA timeline of getting his bachelors on time?

Here's the NCAA definition of a "Non-qualifier":

"A "nonqualifier" is a student who has not graduated from high school or who
has presented neither the core-curriculum GPA and SAT/ACT scores required
for a qualifier.

A nonqualifier shall not be eligible for regular-season competition or practice
during the first academic year in residence and has three seasons of
competition remaining. A nonqualifier during the first academic year in
residence shall be eligible for non-athletic institutional financial aid that is not
from an athletics source and is based on financial need only.

A non-qualifier may earn a fourth year of competition, provided that at the
beginning of the fifth academic year following the student-athlete's initial,
full-time collegiate enrollment, the student-athlete has received a
baccalaureate degree.
A student with a diagnosed disability who was not a qualifier may earn a
fourth season of competition, provided the student athlete has satisfied
specified procedures and has completed at least 75% of his or her degree
program at the beginning of the fifth academic term following the student-
athlete's initial, full-time collegiate enrollment."

Summary:
No Athletic Aid
No practice for 1 full academic year
No competition for 1 full academic year
*only get 3 seasons of DI competition (juco years count toward this limit)


Kenyon Smith was academically ineligible when he enrolled at ISU, thus his year there was as a non-qualifier and he did NOT receive scholarship aid.
If he still has 3 years of eligibility left, then he's fortunate (or mistaken)..because the rules seem to rule otherwise at this time.

He went to Lincoln right away after not qualifying at ISU. Im not sure if that is looked at differently than staying at ISU or Bradley and sitting out one year. My guess the standards for D1 are a lot different than D2 juco. Tarise Bryson was the same as Ruffin's situation. All I know is you get 5 years to complete 4 so as long as he is on pace to graduate I would think he will have 3 years.
 
maybe but he did enroll at ISU his first year..didn't he? I would think the NCAA views that differently than a kid who just went to juco, but maybe not...

As a Lincoln Lynx grad '90 very proud... anyone who can win with the gym they play in should be congratualed.

They actually just opened a new gym this year.... They were supposed to start building in 2004 when I was a student there but never did but they just opened it this year... I haven't been down there yet but heard its nice.

Really? That is something long overdue. The orginal gym was straight out of the 30's. You took your life into your own hands when you went into the basement. Good to hear they moved forward with a new gym.
